Russ says, “In 2004, I bought Monogram's 1/72 scale B-52 kit but had no time to work on it. So, it languished on the shelf until I retired from my civilian job in March 2012. Soon after, I was bitten by the urge to build this model, particularly since I had worked on this aircraft as a young airman and I knew a good deal about it.” It turned out to be a gargantuan undertaking. He used mostly spray-can enamels and weathered surfaces with light sanding. Additions and modifications include: mostly scratchbuilt cockpit with cut-out windows above; detailed chin radome compartment; detailed hatch interiors; carved/corrected vents and exhausts; detailed landing gear with epoxy landing lights; scratchbuilt belly-bomb clips and bay doors; chaff doors; scratchbuilt tail-gun position; drooped wings with spoilers; mostly scratchbuilt maintenance vehicles and ground-support equipment; and detailed outriggers at the wingtips. One of the maintenance trailers holds a mirror and can be rolled under the plane for a better view of Russ’ work. A two-piece wood base, joined with guide pegs and magnets, is surrounded by a scratchbuilt revetment.
