Revell BV - 222 Painting questions
Posted by Bob H. on Monday, July 30, 2012 12:53 PM

It's time to consult the " Braintrust " again. I'm going to build the Revell 1/72 BV - 222 German flying boat for a Christmas present. I need more info on the paint references. Some I can figure out, and some I can't. Lets start with paint flag " A ", called Anthracite Grey ( Revell #9 ).  It is used on instrument dials in multiple locations. The actual Instrument panel is supposed to be RLM 70. Would a good swap for this be RLM 66, or maybe some other Testors MM color? The next paint flag " B " is called light olive ( Revell #45 ). It is used for the fuselage interior, cockpit sides, main fuselage floor. What is a good Testors MM crossover for this ? The next paint flag " C " is called dust grey ( Revell # 77 ). It is used on the front clamshell floor, cockpit steering shaft knuckles, and on the base supports for the desktops that have radio equipment resting on top. The next paint flag " D " ( Revell #314 ) beige is used on the feeder belts underneath the guns. What is the Testors MM crossover? The next paint flag " H " is called light grey ( Revell # 76 ). It is used on the seat frames and sides. Would this possibly be RLM 02, or some other Testors MM color? The last flag " I " is called olive brown ( Revell # 86 ). It is used on the above mentioned desktops that have radio gear resting on top of them. What Testors MM color crosses over to this ? Any Divine guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.            Bob

The "Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart" may be of some help - it lists RLM, Revell & Testors;

http://www.paint4models.com/

Revell also have a conversion chart listing Testors;

Right away the first concern is whether or not there's any reality to the Revell colors. Answer- almost certainly not, at least for the major surfaces.

Be prepared to spray a LOT of RLM 02, cabin sides, floors. The cockpit is RLM 66. All the radios and such are black.

Thanks for the info. Am I safe in going with RLM 02 for almost everything inside except fpr the above mentioned things like the desk supports, desk top, and instrument panel( calling for RLM 70 )? I can do the cockpit in RLM 66 without any problem. Should those instrument gages still be RLM 66, or something else?

After doing more research I feel better about getting this thing started. Thanks to Milairjunkie I studied the Revell to Testors conversion chart and keeping in mind the tip from bondoman here is what I came up with. Paint Flag " A " is Testors RLM 66. Paint Flag " B " gets tricky. The chart calls for SAC Bomber Green - Testors 1793 ( FS 34159 ) or Polyscale acrylics RLM 02. Because of economic reasons I'm going with Testors RLM 02 since I already have that. It is probably close to 1793. Paint Flag " C " is Testors 1988 Euro 1 Gray. Paint Flag " D " is Testors 2118 Deep Yellow and also Polly Scale RLM 04, which my gut tells me is not ok, considering what it's used for. Paint Flag " H " is Testors RLM 63, and Paint Flag " I " is Testors 2038 Israeli Armor Sand Gray. All of the other colors should be easy to cross over... white,black,leather,silver,rust,etc. I hope that this info will help other inexperienced builders like me that happen to have this kit. I searched the Net and kept coming up empty. Once I lay down some paint I'll post a few pix. ( All of us like to see plenty of 'em ). Thanks again for the help.      Bob
