Painting yellow band on Dumb Bombs
Posted by Wirraway on Monday, May 4, 2009 6:22 PM

Presently painting the "Dumb Bombs" for my stratofortress.  The olive drab on the Mk 82/ Mk 117 bombs is easy enough, but what about the yellow band near the nose.  Handpainting is not an option, I dont think anyone could paint that staraight a line.  Masking tape doesnt really work, due to the conical shape of the bomb nose.  Any one got a tip for this ?  I suppose I could slice up some yellow decal and try that Confused [%-)]

What I do is; (kinda tough to explain, but I'll try) , using 2 pieces of tape, 1 on each side, allow the tape to conform to the bomb, so that the whole tip is covered. Then holding the bomb tip against my middle finger, x-acto held like a pencil. I then spin the bomb slowly, just enough to cut through the tape.

I prefer to do several drybrushings of cromate yellow, as apposed to spraying and risking "bleeding". This is the method I used for all my A-10- mk 82s.

Hope that all makes enough sence to be useful.

I did this on my Monogram 1/48 A-1 Skyraider and was very pleased with the results.

I took a piece of heat shrink tubing and cut one end flush with a sharp blade.

Then I painted the nose of the bomb yellow, let it dry well for several hours or overnight whichever you prefer, then I slipped the piece of heat shrink tubing over the end of the bomb where I wanted it to be, and painted the bomb olive drab. Voila!

I hope this helps you my friend and please be safe out there on your motorcycle beat! Make a Toast [#toast]

Heard about this method where you first paint the front end yellow, then once it dries, put an orthodontic size rubber band on the end and then paint with olive drab.  Remove the rubber band and it's done.  It should work and all you need to do is paint the yellow first.

I read in the Reader Tips section of FSM to use teflon tape for round areas so I tried it on my P-47. It actually worked really well.

I prefer using O-rings. You can get an O-ring kit for just a few bucks that contain an assortment of sizes. These should last you years and years and they roll on easier than flat rubber bands.

Hello again

Does anyone know where I can get the elastic bands or O rings in Canada (Ontario) to allow me to paint straight lines on my 1/72 A-10 Warthog ordnance

I went to Canadian Tire outlet and they didn't have small enough elastics or 0 rings

The Mk82 bombs are so small I couldn't find anything that would fit securely around them

 Thanks

Scott
