Completed Hummer
Posted by kenny_conklin on Friday, March 2, 2007 10:18 AM

Just finished up my hummer for the Military Veterans GB. So i figured i would post the pics here too. Didnt really get into any extra detail. the model is OOB and i used all tamiya paints on it and just got the tamiya weathering kits. just tried to make her a little dusty. she isnt exactly like my hummer i used in the army next one i build i will try to do that. hope you all enjoy the pics.(the pics arent the greatest i have to get better lighting)

Nice clean build and truly excellent presentation. I love the plaque and patch!

The one thing that looks off is the white in the ditch on the passenger's side. Is that supposed to be snow? If so, keeping it to one side and adding some to the correspondind shadows of the rocks would tie things together a bit better.

thank you aj. the ditch is actually a creek i wanted to try water for the first time so i went with a sandy bed with rock at the bottom. after looking at it once i poured it i pulled a homer and said DOH !!! i should have made it a muddy bottom. lesson learned for next time :)

thanks again aj always value your opinion glad you liked it.

I just did a step by step over at Armorama involving a stream. have a look here for what I did. I think it came out okay. Here's one shot of it.

Hey Kenny, Nice hummer. It came out quite well. To be honest, I didn't even really notice the white and when I did look at it I figured it had something to do with the lighting. So it isn't too distracting, at least from my perspective.

Again, nice job, and I'll see you over at the 'stash' GB!!  Does this mean you'll be able to start that big ol' monster for that build??  I gotta be the front-runner for the turtle...

Looking good.  The only thing I will add is that it looks a little too clean for my tastes.  I would at least add a little dust to the HMMWV so it doesn't look so new.  Still looks great though.  Good job.

A question for ajlafleche......... where can i find your article in Armorama on how you did that stream? That is just awesome! That close up photo from such a low angle is just magnificent!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Bow [bow].

And Kenny, nice diorama mate! I love the base, very effective. I don't think your dry creek bed is too light. Alot of dry creek and river beds over here in oz are about that colour. Maybe a light wash of the same colour as the bank may blend it in a little better.

   What do the experts say?

thanks IYAAYAS i tried a little weather around the wheel wells rear and front bumper and bottoms of the doors but it didnt come out that pronounced. i think i was more scared to over weather than under weather it. i have to practice some more hopefully my weathering will get better.

no rooster . i was in the 101 from 93 to 95 and when i was leaving D. Co. was being phased out as 11H's. They have now been moved over to 19D's which are scouts . All the people i knew are probably long gone by now.

i was also 11H back in the day before they phased them out. i was stationed in italy with the 173rd, and they re-classed me to an 11B Banged Head [banghead]. i have to learn all their stupid battle drills. none the less i had a great time for the 8 years i was in the army. i'm not sure how they did it in campbell, but they assigned one platoon as a motorized platoon per company. so two were light, and one was motorized with .50's and MK-19's, no TOW's Disapprove [V]. when we deployed to iraq, OIF1, they soon realized how stupid of a descision they made. so now every platoon has a certain number of trucks with about two marks and 50's per plt. and two javlans for the wpns sqd. sad, but it just isn't the same without the TOW's. when i was leaving they gave us the option of choosing any MOS we wanted and off  to school they went. I didnt change my MOS cause i was ETSing when they were doing the change over. you also had the choice of staying and just changing over to a 19D wasnt forced to go 11B.

our platoons were set up like this two command vehichles the LT's and SFC , the 4 more hummers. each was set up like this i will use my platoon as an example.

D41 TC M16A2, Driver M16A2 w/M203, Gunner M16A2 sidearm 9mm , TOW + 50 cal

D42 TC M16A2, Driver M16A2 , Gunner M249 sidearm 9mm , TOW + Mrk 19

D43 would be the same as 41 and D44 would be the same as D42.

we were heavily armed at all times Big Smile [:D]

yeah that is how we were set up when we were 11H's. very armed. i think we were 80% of the battalions firepower. now the TOW is gone, and we basically have the same setup as before, except there are no more TOW's and the PSG and LT's vehicles have mounted 240's. still alot of firepower, but you can't beat the TOW or the sights. bad thing is even if we had the TOW's, we couldn't use it. everything is so micro-managed to striclty. it takes a battalion commander just to fire off 60mm illum at night! HE? you better wait for awhile, because it takes the brigade commanders approval. and by the time he wakes up and gets the sit-rep, and gives the OK, its too late. take care kenny. as we used to say in my old hotel company: "kill 'em all!"

i don't think they are completly phased out. from my understanding, all the 11 series combined, and you eventually serve in each position, or unit, 11H, 11B, 11M. the only exception is the 11C, they are still a MOS all to their self. but i think some units still have them. so being that all infantry are combined, some also let go of the TOW's. it was more of a unit transition i think. don't quote me on it though.

thanks roo . i saw on the army web site it is now 11X all the others combine like you said .

I always loved doing the 25 mile roadmarches with the 11B's you know they called us Tired of Walking (TOW) but it never failed no 11H ever fell out but a bunch of 11B's always did. Always made me feel so much better to be a 11H Big Smile [:D]

Hey Kenny

I was reading through this thread with interest until I realized that I didn't understand at all what you guys were sayingTongue [:P]Confused [%-)]

Anyways- great job on the dio. The base is outstanding.

As far as weathering, Mig pigments are really easy to control, just started to play around with them myself.

The TOW is not being phased out.  It is still widely in use.  Some of the unit allocations to have them have changed based on transformation and the changes to units that it is causing though.  Maybe you are thinking of the Dragon.  It has gone away and was replaced by the Javelin.

thanks steve i will have to pick some up and try and see what happens. any questions about what we were talking about feel free to ask :)

thanks Gino , I know the MOS 11H is gone just wasnt sure if TOW's are still being used or not been out for awhile now. I assume the 19D's are the TOW platoons now ?? or is 11X still in control of them?

Yup, pretty much all in the new RSTA (Recon, Survailance, & Target Acquisition) BNs.  They have replaced the DIV CAV Squadrons in each new Modular BDE.  Eack BDE now has 2 Combined Arms Maneavuer BNs, mixed IN and AR (2 x companies of each), and a RSTA BN, along with an FA BN, and a BDE Support BN, etc.  It is an interesting new set-up.

Or "a wealth of useless knowledge," as my wife says.  It's pretty bad when I can remember all this stuff, but can't remember the name of someone I worked with for a couple years at a prior post, especially when I see them again. Confused [%-)]
