I have some pictures, somewhere, of that B-25 they fished out of a lake in North or South Carolina several years ago ... I will look when I get home.

Pfffttt ... after I posted I had another thought - fresh or salt water? That is going to make a HUGE difference in how it weathers. For some excellent color pics of a TBD that's been underwater since 1942, go to the TIGHAR website and look at their Devastator Project.

As to how to get that look, well, I'm no expert, but I'm guessing various washes with oils or acrylics, maybe something like Rustall?

I remember seeing a diorama of an Avenger I think done just that way. Was it at this past Nats?

If it's in salt water there will be a lot of sealife, the most pictures I have seen the plane i covered with shell fish and other living things. The corrosion will also eat its part of the plane. Anything made from fabric will be gone in a few months.

In fresh water fabric will not be destroyed. The plane will be covered in dirt that the currents bring, mostly sediment. There was a nice documentary of the b-29 that is on the bottom of the lake Mead behind Hoover dam, even the silk parachute was intact.

Half way down the page of the following link and you will find a nice photo of the b-29 cockpit.

And here is a Brewster that has been in a fresh water lake for 50 years:

Depending on the depth and climate it will be covered in various forms of marine life. As already posted the salt water is VERY harsh on submerged items. The deeper and cooler the water is slows this effect though. Due to more sunlight in shallow water, far more marine life will be found, and in tropical waters it is more colorful.

For the record a B25 was fished out of Lake Greenwood, Greenwood SC in 1983-4, Training flight crashed on June 6, 1944. There is another one still in Lake Murry SC. Anyone game for fishing it out?
