FINISHED PICS!! Field Kitchen snow scene
Posted by the doog on Friday, February 22, 2008 2:43 PM

Hi Guys,

Well, this isn't exactly "armor", nor technically a "diorama" (?) so I thought I'd post it here--this is, of course, the Tamiya Field Kitchen, with some modified figures, and an Italeri BMW motorcycle.

I have to give a shout of "THANKS!" out to "redleg12" for graciously sending me the motorcycle! (I hope ya don't mind thatI buried it in a scale foot of snow, Mike! Whistling [:-^]Big Smile [:D])

It was built pretty much OOB, with only the extra figure comng from one of the old Tamiya "German Soldiers at Rest" box; the boys got new AM resin heads, and the poses were modified to look like they're crouching against the wind. The blankets/capes are lead foil, covered liberally with a few coats of white glue to build up bulk--they were a PAIN to do!

I'm planning on doing a tutorial on doing a snow scene like this with planting polyeurathane foam--I'm pretty happy how this came out, in terms of looking like the cart and horses are moving through the snow.

Here's the "walk-around" pics...

The snow is by Woodland Scenics...

The sticks sticking out of the snow are slanted to give the impression of a blowing wind....BRRRR!

I love painting horses! They were done mostly with oils-over-acrylics...

"Hans And Franz" Laugh [(-D]

Getting "franz" to "grip" his blanket required a lot of layers of gap-filling super glue to simulate the actual "blanket" in his grasp...

The abandoned/broken down bike....

And the "tracks" in the snow--I was both pretty surprised and pleased with the effect here...

I was thinking of calling this "No Gas but Grass"? What do ya all think? Then again, I thought also a more generic title like "Retreat from Moscow" might put you more "in the scene"?  Any suggestions?

Be watching for the tutorial--I'll probably post it over in the "Diorama's" forums, but I'll post a note here when its up!

All questions, comments and suggestions welcomed ! ! ! ! Big Smile [:D] the doog

This build leave me cold BrrrrrSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Nice build, love the horses. At first I though it was a waste of the motorcycle but it fits and lends a message.

Looking out the front window see this northeast snow storm and turning to this and the realism is excellent.

Outstanding work, Doog! Couldn't see... is that chair tied down at all? That's the only thing that jumped out at me. If it is, then my mistake.

Really like the frozen effect you've accomplished. Stark, bone-chilling. Horses are your best to date, that I've seen. I don't know who I feel sorrier for: Hanz and Franz, the horses, or the bike... but I know I don't want to be out there with any of them.

ps- the branch being run over in the last pic...? Nice touch. Howabout "Frozen Dinners"?

Hey Guys, thanks for all the nice compliments and for taking the time to comment! YOu know that I appreciate it a lot! Blush [:I]

Yeah, I hated the thought of burying the bike, but I thought it was just such a neat juxtaposition between the old and the new, the reliablility of the "two horsepower" over the "two stroke"! Laugh [(-D]

I'm happy to hear that you all thought it looked "cold"; I was really trying to convey that in the poses of the guys, and the kinda windblown look of the snow. Like I said, when I do the toot, I'll cover all that.

Yes, bufflehead; I did take a LOT of WIP photos! Big Smile [:D] The base is polyeurathane foam, covered in Spackle and plaster. You'll see in the toot!

I actually did NOT document the building of the actual model itself--I kinda wanted a nice and easy build after the Brummbar, but I will say that the horses' harnesses are all made from super-thin plastic strips, cut with a single edge razor and a metal ruler--tedious work, but worth it. The horses were painted without the harnesses, and then the harnesses put onmostly with superglue. I didn't want then harnesses to look molded-on, so I painted them first, and then super-glued them so that they stand away from the horses a bit.

Likewise, the reins are long thin plastic strips--to "sag" them, I used a liberal coating of Tenax R7--the most potent glue I know of, and just patiently molded them as they rehardened.Another PITA, but again, the only way to get the look I wanted...

Thanks again, guys!  I should have the toot up in a few days, if the weekend goes as planned! Enjoy yours! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Oh yeah--"Frozen Dinners"....LOL!!! Laugh [(-D]

As I told you then, when I looked at the bike, I saw them and they just screamed "DOOG". Cool [8D]Glad to see the bike came in handy. Being an OD guy I would not have done a German bike justice even buried in the snow. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

was that the kit that did NOT come with the horses? I had the one with the horses and the harness "kit" sent me screaming into the night, they were cut to width but not to length. If you have the directions for the harness I might be willing to take another shot at it or notWhistling [:-^] I plan on building all your builds ah...do you think they will notice when I slip in YOUR finished pics after my WIP pics? ooh did I say this out loud? great work again love the horses Bow [bow]

Doog, that is simply amazing!

You can really see the the emotions running through the soldiers faces as they trudge through the heavy snow.

Lovely work!

Cheers

Wow!  Really top notch Doog.  The horses are very well done; nice attention to detail.  The deep snow is convincing and I love the abandoned bike.  Nice work all around.

My only suggestion would be to maybe cover the vertical edges with some styrene sheet.  Would cover the rough edges of the foam and give it a more finished look.

Doog, you numbah one! The only suggestion that I would make, as it is very apparently supremely cold in this scene, would be to paint the hands  with a thick gray or black to turn their large hands into gloves or mittens. I don't know that they would want to be exposing so much bare flesh to the cold like they are. Maybe leave an exposed finger tip at the end of a couple of glove fingers.

doog:  Another masterpieceMake a Toast [#toast]!!!, I really admire your willingness to try a variety of builds.  A few things really jump out as exceptional:  The snow that the horses have "trudged" through, the reins and chains, the guys' hats...particulaly the "wool" and as always the work on the figures' faces.  Most people overlook the yellow grass in the snow...nice touch.  You may want to add a few blades to the cart wheels too.  I plan to try to use planting polyurathane for a "mud bog", that toot' would come in handy.  Are you familar electric-heated styrofoam cutters?...not applicable here of course, but FYI for the future maybe...

If you love painting horses so much, how about building the Anheiser Busch Clydesdales and Cart!?, I know there is a kit out there...I saw it on a vendor's table...

Geez guys, I'm humbly appreciative for all the nice compliments! Blush [:I] Once again, thnaks for taking the time to comment! Wink [;)]

redleg12, again, the bike is, IMHO, the aspect of this scene that really gives it the sense of irony--Your generousity was, and IS, both unexpected and much appreciated, my friend! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Thanks Tigerman! I really couldn't see building this kit and just leaving it standing free; if you remember my "Midieval Tournament" dio that I built for Jenn, I have a "thing" for putting bikes and horses together. Maybe it has something to do subconsciously with my band? Laugh [(-D]

Thanks to, Manny! Well, I guess it's a "diorama" then! I didn't really see a story at first, but I guess it does have one, albeit understated and sort of ambiguous? How was that cup o' chocolate? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

dostacos, this is the old kit; the same as I've always known--I didn't even know that there was a kit without horses? What they give you in the kit is two horses, and a piece of thin plastic, about 5" by 3", and a diagram to cut into various "A", "B ","C' lengths of various lengths and thicknesses. YOu have to cut it and apply according to a diagram. I cut them out with a single-edged razor blade and a steel ruler. I screwed up a bunch of them; it's a real tedious process--it took me three patient sessions to get the harnesses all done--I couldn't do it all at once! If you really want the old directions, send me a PM with your address! And thanks for the "stars" rating, BTW! Big Smile [:D]

agent g, madmike, constructer, jester, thanks all for the nice words! Blush [:I]

pordoi--thanks also, for the nice "rating"! Smile [:)] That's a good suggestion about the sides, unfortunately, at this point, I don't think I could get the sides covered with anything that would "stick"--the sides are both Spackling compound and white glue, painted over. The bottom is not "flush" to a 90 degree angle in spots, so if I put any plastic sheeting against them, they would lay funny, ya know? But thanks for the suggestion--something to consider for the "next one"!

subfixer--yeah, their hands ARE kinda big, aren't they? Sigh [sigh] Hmmm. I'l have to think about the "gloves" aspect--I'm a little hesitant to do it though, cuz in all the shots I've seen, I rarely see actual gloves for the most part, and if you remember the accounts of the battles around Moscow, so many thousands didn't have even so much as an extra pair of socks, much less hats and gloves. I figured the hats were maybe comandeered from some peasants, but gloves seemed to be in shorter supply? I want to show that, even in such obviously frigid weather, these poor guys had to endure the old summer uniforms. But thanks for the suggestion!

SMJ, thanks too! I'm happy that you noticed the grass in the snow--I thought that up, and wondered if anyone would notice the detail? I mixed some blades into the snow, and even though they're not all individually peeking through the snow, the color of them on the top of the snow seems to give the impression...I was surprised and mor ethan a little relieved that it appears that way. Thanks for your nice complments! Hmmm...a beer cart? Cool! Maybe I could have it towing a "puppchen" or something! LOL! Laugh [(-D]

Thnaks again to all who take the time to comment! Now to get working on that toot! Have a great weekend all! Big Smile [:D]Thumbs Up [tup]

Only a guy who lives in snow country can really get the feel of snow. You nailed it. I really like this. The only thing I'd do differently would be to cover their hands, even if it looked likie old socks or rags.

"dostacos, this is the old kit; the same as I've always known--I didn't even know that there was a kit without horses?"

Yeah, Tamiya recently re-issued this kit w/o the horse but with some cool figs...not sure why they decided to forego the horses (probably cause most folks tended to model the kitchen as set up)...finding the "old" kit is hard these days and may even be a collector's item...

There'a quite a few of these that pop up from time to time on ebay; in fact this is the second kit I've bought in as many years. The first kit I used the horses for a gift for Jenn. Check ebay for them; additionally, you can use the horses from the new Italeri kit where they released TWO different horse-drawn kits in the same box, with four horses! The horses have molded-on harnesses though, but they're stil usable.

Hey, thanks ajfleche! There's certainly enough snow on the ground up here to make a comparison! Sigh [sigh]Big Smile [:D]

Interesting idea for the rags/socks...that might have been a possibility...wish I had that idea when I was building it!

a little more snow on the motocycle might have been a bit more realistic given how long it seems to have sat there...

also.. did hans win that iron cross doing field kitchen duty? haha
