Display of 1/350 ships - brass stands?
Posted by Irish3335 on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 4:16 PM
Hi all, Im looking for a way to display my 1/350 SMS Konig, and I dont want to use the craptacular setup in the kit.  I have looked around at the brass stands, but all of the ones I see are geared toward wooden ships, with a slit in the middle for the keel.  Any ideas where I can get some that are meant for modern warships?  Thanks in advance!

The local Ace Hardware Store, in the electrical department.  Find the oldest guy around and ask him for lamp finials.  These are the knobs which hold lamp shades to the lamp harp (left side below)

Drill a through-hole, then cut off the top-knot.   Run a bolt up through the base & finial into the nut you previously affixed inside the bottom of the hull.

The two on the right are lamp shade risers.  Handle similarly or use the threaded part.   The threaded part is 1/4-28 NF threads.   If you can find a nut which fits, epoxy that into the bottom of the hull.

If you are or know a shooting enthusiast you can use the shorter firearms shell casings. These are .22 caliber 'short' on a 1/600 scale model. Some of the larger pistol cases should work for 1/350.

Spent 45 cal work well for 1/350, just remove the primer and your screw hole is already there.  A little brasso will shine them up nicely.  For mine I use a dermal and contour the tops to fit the hull, I usualy use 3/4 offset cases so no holes in hull.

Another thing you might want to look for in the hardware store are bushings, used in electric motors and other things. I was desperate to find suitable mounts for a 1/720 USS Enterprise and settled on two 1-inch bronze bushings. Polished with sandpaper and sealed with clear laquer, they looked great when all was said and done, and they have the advantage of having a hollow center so no holes to drill.

Oh geez what a memory, sort of. Ed you're probably a straight arrow, but lamp parts circa 1970 made for great little immolation devices in which to burn umm, Afgan resiny stuff.

I'm going to use that idea about casings for my San Francisco. It has the right feel, doesn't it? Now I just have to go make some. Colt Python otta work.

Hi, I went to Orchard Supply Hardware, and sure enough, found a set of two lamp finials for less than $2.50.  They had a great gold plate on it, with huge seamlines that would have looked horrible.  So I sanded them down, and sprayed them gold.  Not as flashy, but they will be under the boat anyway.  Thanks alot for the help, much appreciated!
