FINISHED PICS!! --page 6 -- Castle Neuschwanstein
Posted by the doog on Sunday, November 16, 2008 10:09 PM

Hi guys!

Here's what's been taking my time at the workbench lately--Jenn's Christmas present; Castle Neischwanstein. This was our "Dream Vacation" which we took in 2007. Here we are at the castle.

And here's the kit, from DOYUSHA, a 1/220 scale model that I scored off eBay for about $35.00--a deal, really!

and here's what you get in the box--you even get ground material!

The base:

Construction starts by clamping together the walls of the main house...

and then adding the rest of the buldings in their cradles--best to do it this way to avaoid fit issues later...

The base has some molding sinkholes that have to be tamed; accomplished here witha micro-chisel from MicroMark. What a handy tool!

I also textured it a bit more with Mr Surfacer 500 to give it a more "rocky" appearance...

I started painting it by airbrushing a Tamiya mixture of light gray, and then, by adding some brown, making a shadow shading color to simukate ground material which would cover the crags and valleys...

and a somewhat darker gray for even deeper shadows.

The gatehouse is some bright plastic!

Here's the building pieces, individually.

and here they are assembled on the base.

Painting of the pieces starts by painting the interior black, with brush and cheap craft paints..

And then all get a coat of Tamiya WHite primer, followed by a coat of Tamiya Flat white...

The gate house is given a coat of "Pennsylvania Clay", and then some other colors stippled on to provide the illusion of "bricks".

Certain parts of the castle are a tan color--here's the painted pieces...

The castle towers flanking the gatehouse are made of darker tellow and tan blocks. I simulated this by just "swishing" an appropriately-colored oil of White+RawUmber+Yellow+Orange onto the towers.

The interior gatehouse is a lighter golden coor--I used an acrylic base coat, and oil stippling on this as well.

The roofs got a dark grey coat...

And I've applied some pin washes to the seams, windows, and crannies.

There are still more details to be painted and cleaned up, and the roofs have to be weathered. Then the base still needs a lot of work...but that's where I am so far....

Questions or comments welcomed! Big Smile

Looks like the kit went together pretty nicely. That is awesome how you did the brick effect on the gatehouse and towers by simply dabbing on the paint, the effect is simply amazing.Thumbs Up [tup] Can't wait to see the finished product. Smile [:)]

WOW! Looks like it's a pretty good size. Only questions I got for you is... how have you been hiding it from her?! Assuming she doesn't know about her gift.
And... where are the 1/220 scale Dream Vacationers?

That is truly amazing, doog. What an interesting subect, and model. I wish you were making one for me... I'd just sit and stare at it all day. Wouldn't get anything else done.

I know she's gonna love it.

WOW!! Simply amazing! I also like how you "suggested" the bricks! Are you going to use the supplied groundwork,or make it more realistic?

Nice work, Doog... My Household 6 had a comment too... She said, "So.. he built a MODEL... FOR her?? Don't you even THINK abut it! If YOU give me a model, it'd better be made outta gold..."Black Eye [B)]

Thanks, guys!

Thank you, mikael! I'm goin to post a pic of the gatehouse for comparison in mynext update!

psstoff95, hiding it has been a bit of an issue! But being that Jenn is in college now,, for Pre-Med, and thoroughly swamped by Organic Chemistry this semester, I've been mostly going over her house, so I haven't had to hide it too much. She did spend the weekend here though, and I had to re-box it, and stow it in the kitchen, hidden in the cardboard box it came in! LOL! She was dying to peek!

Thanks, too, SteveM! I know how you feel--I almost wanted one for myself! It's a really sharp-looking kit!

panzer_dan, I plan to do the base with my own materials--I plan to do it in an autumn setting, with colored trees off-setting the pines in the rear of the castle. It's going to be pretty amazing if it comes out the way I see it in my mind! Thanks for commenting!

Hans--- Thanks too! Hey what if you painted that helo pink? LOL! Wink [;)]

Anyway, I can't wait to see this with thouse autum colors, sounds like its going to look real pretty. Were you going to extend the base from the rocks provided or just set it onto some wood and mount it as is?

Nice work on that Doog. What a great idea, to build an aide memoire of a dream holiday. Very cool.

Wasn't it built by Ludwig II, the slightly kooky Baviarian? Did you also visit Sloss Nympenburg, one of his other castles in Munich?

Chris, I think I'm going to just finish it on the base as it stands--no additional wood base or anything.  It's already pretty large enough, and so I would think that a base big enough to fit under it will make it look toy-like. It will look cooler if it's just standing alone. Smile [:)]

Thanks, Narayan!

Yes, this was built by "Mad Ludwig the IInd"--although that appellation seems to have been more an effort to justify his probable-murder on the grounds that he had pillaged Bavaria's coffers for his castles and lifestyle, and bankrupted his country. It seems to me that he was "offed" by a conspiracy of more fiscally-minded members around him.

We didn't get to see his other castles--we did start our vacation/holiday in Munich, but it was only to pick up a rent-a-car and drive to Schwangau.

I've been in Munich since then, but on busioness, and di not have time to sightsee much.

what a cute couple, her hair is almost as long as yours now!

Thats a nice looking kit, I cant wait to see it finished.  Are you gona make a little 1/220 scale doog n Jenn?

Atleast you have a reason to hide it from her, as opposed to hans here, having to hide it so he doesnt get yelled at, hehe

Doog, that is really good work on a cool kit---talk about winning points with the g/f...mine has been after me for a year to do a dio with fairies in it for her---FAIRIES!!! Might ahve to though, cause she saw your castle...thanks...

Only nitpicks: the colors used for the smaller buildings are really bright...I might have lightened them a bit to give 'em more scale-effect...great work though...I've seen this kit around a few times; pretty neat idea for a model...maybe we'll see other famous landmarks modeled in plastic---White House, Eifel Tower, etc.....Great Wall of China---wait, that's too big...

Thanks, Huxy, and smeagol!

I did find some tiny railroad figures--I think they're like, 'Z" scale or something--I mat put them in, if they look right. I think they're just ahair too tall, but they're really close!

Manny--thanks, friend! I had to laughg about the "Faeries" thing--where ya gonna find faeries"! LOL!

This company actually does a whole line of Japanese castles--really strange looking, some of them. This European castle is probably the only one of its kind that they do though.

I know what you mean about the color of the facades in the photos---that's my flash; I had to take these at night, instead of the usual daylight I shoot in. But the buildings are very nearly that bright, especially when the sun shines on them. I'll post some photos when I do the next update--probably later tonight!

Thanls for commenting, guys! Big Smile [:D]

Way to go Doog.  Another masterpiece you have created.  Do I detect another FSM article or your creation the in the photo section.

Little doog and Jenn as mentioned is a good idea.  Maybe doog swimming the alligator filled moat to save his betroved queen or scaling the wall to rescue the damsel in distress.

All kidding aside Doog great work.

I see so many fantastic works of - art - not just models they are works of art by so many talented people,Make a Toast [#toast] I feel hesitant in even consider posting a picture since I am still only working on my third model since I started.

Seeing the picture of you and Jenn is great as you talk so fondly of her.  Better hold on to that little treasure or I might mosey on in.  Laugh [(-D].  Remember I may be an old codger, but I can still run faster scared that you can mad.

COOL, Erik! Well, I'm sad to see that apparently the weather there was the same as our first day there--it was miserable--rainy, cold; but the next day was gorgeous!

Here we are on the ramp right in front of the entrance:

...and for Manny--here's the colors of the bricks and walls in the front and back of the entrance:

Thanks, too for the compliments Erik, and Papa John! (Your post made me laugh! Laugh [(-D]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg])

I'll have an update late tonight after I get home from Jenn's house!

Well, here we go!

Here's where I am so far. I do believe that the castle is finished!

Here's an overview of the pieces so far...I gave the roofs a bit of weathering. Some of them ere given light washes of light gray oils, and streaks of the same. Others, like the turret tops and one of the roofs in particular was given an oil "patina" of light white/green...EVERY seam, window, corner, seam, etc, was given a pin wash--either black-gray on the white, or raw umber on the tan parts.

It's a little harsh in the flash--it doesn't look like this in "real life".

This got the most "patina"...

Here's the gate house in "real light"--not as garish as the flash pictures; compare it to the picture in the previous post above...

 ...and this interior too...

The weird thing about this scale is that, I have found that in actual scale, you have to use slightly brighter colors in order to "translate" to the correct shades. If I used darker, more muted colors, it wouldn't look as realistic in my opinion.

Here's some shots on the base. The base has also been given a wash of raw umber+orange for a nice warm "dirt/forrest floor" color. I still have to install three stairways in the inner perimeter..

And compare to the real thing:

Here's what I'll be going for with the base...note the bright color of the gatehouse, and the "patina" of the roofs?

I should have something more on the base in a few days. I really don't expect it to take that long, to be honest!

Comments appreciated again! Big Smile [:D]

Doog - I know model railroaders who would kill Dead [xx(] to be able to weather structurs as well as you did Jenn's Castle. What a Fantastic Build you have guided us through again. Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] Trina (my Wife) wanted me to tell you - "It is Absolutely Gorgeous Kisses [:X] "

Some N scale model railroad ballast would really trick out the base with the illusion of boulders !

Totally cool. I'm having a hard time gauging how large the model is... mind taking a shot for scale with, maybe, a 1/35 figure next to it?

The weathering is top-notch work, doog.

Really outstanding...these shots and your weathering have "toned" down the original entrance facade colors to where they look really good...love your technique on the bricks where instead of trying to individually pick them out you "swirled" colors in that replicate the overall look of the pattern, unless your eyes are right on them---great artistic technique...you nailed the greenish patina on the copper roofs...

Top notch, doog...she should love it...

...you should carve some tiny figs that represent you and her at the entrance...

Thanks, Sean, Steve, and Manny! Here's some more pics. These are shot in natural light, and include a 1/35 figure for reference:

Now, check this out-- some 1/220 figures that I scored off eBay--what do you al think of their scale? Do they look appropriately sized? Or do they look too big? They're supposedly the same size as the castle.

.....actually, I just found this picture, which seems to show that the figures are too big!

Anybody know where I might find accurately scaled figures?

Doog, I'd say the figs are too big. The pic you found proves that I think.

Excellent weathering! It looks just like I remeber it.
