That is the way we fitted canvas sunshades and awnings on freighters in the tropics: brass eyelets in the canvas and fine lacing to fit them to railings, frames etc. In 1/35th scale the lacing would be near invisible so I left it off. Using thin line tends to look grossly overscale so I succumbed to the delights of super glue

Hi Searat 12, yes, couldn't agree more here. I bought an Alpine miniature WW II German officer in foul weather gear to go on the bridge (real snooty looking little guy, definately the skipper) and I am waiting for a set of Azimut S-boat crewmen to arrive. This is going to be my biggest challenge on this buld because my figures always turn out rather c****y, looking like the return of the living dead. I will follow all tips and take my time on them. They may turn out looking half human

Here are some update photo's of the stern (a lot of work going on there at the moment), canvas dodger on the starboard side also fitted, scratch built "Cuba 1a" radar detector fitted and first attempt at a vaguely humanoid boat skipper in progress (anyone with information on cap and epaulette colours please chip in. My information is rather vague and most available photo's are in B&W). Okay, screenies:

  Julian, I am very impressed with your model. You are to be commended for such good work. You live in Holland, a nation with a rich maritime history. Have you ever considered making a model of  "Die Zeven Provincien" or other ships from the era of Admirals Tromp or De Ruyter ?

Hi Crackers, I haven't considered building models of these ships but I do regularly visit the Batavia Werf in Lelystad in Holland where a replica of the Batavia was built and where a replica of the Zeven Provincieen is being built. I posted a lot of photos of these visits here online so if you do a quick search you should be able to find them. The large scale S-boat has a special meaning for me. I sailed from Ijmuiden on supply vessels before getting a job ashore and nowadays work for the Port of Amsterdam based in Ijmuiden. Just around the corner from my office is a huge German WW II bunker where S-boats were stationed during the war. At the root end of the Vissershaven another bunker used to stand before the RAF flattened it. I can really imagine these boats heading out towards Great Yarmouth at night.

The Azimut resin crew for the S-100 arrived this week as well as some other goodies from JB models of Austria:

A rather motley collection of nautical misfits that should add some life to the build. The officer sitting on the side of the bridge is a real gem.

Two metal replacement barrels for two Mg 34's I will be adding to the bridge sides. Not too sure about the antenne base (for the starboard side of the rear bridge). Don't think its really big enough to be a visible anachronism but will decide on the go/no go later in the build.

As you have seen from my almost finished model that figures are needed to bring attention and interest to such a large and long hull. I will wait and see how your recent purchase turns out before making a decision regarding my crew.

The figures shown on my model are temporary and are realy tank personel ..........not quite right.

No, you are not wrong. Ships were mainly wood and aluminium. The Kalotte also contained some armourplate and joins were not all aluminium rivets but also nuts and bolts. If you take a good look the rust streaks I added are mostly on or around the metal parts while the hull is dirty instead of rusty. I agree that the boats were very well maintained (except during the final stages of WW II). I also believe in having a little bit of fun building models ("I build for fun and not for museums" seems to be my mantra and motto during this build because several people have rolled over me telling me certain details are not correct) so I allow myself some "artistic license". I certainly find this build (and the Italeri model as base) very sexy.

In regard to the subject of rust it is not uncommon on wooded boats. In my shipyard we seviced many commercial and private wooden vessels that showed plenty of rust on the hulls down to the water line. This was caused by having guard rails and staunchions of steel as well as having the cap rail .rubbing strip and sponsons all attached to the hull with steel bolts. Even the small ferries that were well maintained were always showing hull rust marks when in for their annual slipping.

Actually painting these munchkin size crewmen terrifies me. It is the single part of scale model building that I have great difficulties mastering.

yes, that is the plan. At the moment it is hard to tell where the workbench ends and the S-100 begins . I have no idea at the moment what the next project will be having more models in my stash than I will probably ever be able to build. The Heller La Reale de France and Victory are tempting but so are the Italeri PT  boat and the Revell Cutty Sark. I have also recently bought a lot of Dragon's 1/35 scale armour so I might even step away from model ships for while. First step will probably be new spectacles to help me see what I am building and painting
