Coast Guard Modeling Subjects
Posted by oceano75 on Friday, January 22, 2010 9:39 PM

Hello all,

I generally hang out in the ships forum, but this is a cross post.  If anyone out there is interested in modeling Coast Guard subjects, I have built a website that describes the heritage of the service and identifies as many models as I can find.  I invire you to visit the site and provide comments.

Thanks

That sounds interesting, especially if it covers USCG aircraft.  Can you post the web site address?

Nice website, I'll be adding it to my favorites, I also like building USCG stuff.

You might want to add Fireball Modelworks and Cobra Company to your list of models. Fireball has a 1/72 resin conversion kit for the HH-60J and decals in 1/72 and 1/48. He also has HH-65 decals in 1/72 & 1/48 as well as a correction kit for the 1/48 Trumpeter kit. Cobra Company has a 1/48 HH-60J conversion.

By remarkable coincidence we've been having a discussion of Coast Guard modeling subjects this evening in another thread:  /forums/t/124800.aspx .

Thanks for the input - I know for a fact there are more models out there that I do not know about.  My goal is to get input from as many people as possible and make this site a joint effort that is as comprehensive as possible.  I'll add your comments as soon as possible.

Thank you for the link and I will add my praise to that of the others for your fine work.  I  must admit it was daunting posting my site knowing that you, having worked for the historian, would be able to critique it.  Please feel free to point out any discrepancies between your research and mine.  I would like the site to be accurate and I know I do knot know everything.

Thanks!

Oceano75, you're far, far too generous.  But if those drawings direct some modelers' attention to the vast number of interesting, attractive modeling subjects offered by the Coast Guard and its predecessor institutions, nobody will be happier than I will.  In my opinion the U.S. Coast Guard is one of the most grievously under-represented armed services in the world of model building.

Great site oceano75.  I am a big ice herc fan and have the kit and some AM decals to actually do one in 1/72 scale.

As an ice observer, have you ever flown out of St. John's, Newfoundland on patrol?  I live quite close to Torbay Airport and see the USGS HC-130 there all the time.  I always loved hercs but the plain gray schemes doesn't come close to the USCG scheme.

Keep up the great work with the website.

'oceano75',

While I tend to stick to WWII subjects, one of my fond memories from the past was Monogram's 1/72 UH-16E Albatross in the Coast Guard configuration. It took me a while to track one down but I finally got it.

I always loved the color scheme of her, as well as the thought of doing a subject that wasn't all about raining down destruction.

Regards, PWB.

Actually I was the Deputy Commander back in 1985-86 and we flew our patrols out of Gander.  We did divert once to St. John's when we had an engine failure.  I understand they have since moved to St. John's.  I am slowly adding pictures of my collection to the site.  I just added my C-130 in its original delivery paint scheme.  I thourougly enjoyed both cities.

Ok, it took me forever and I know everyone has been waiting breathlessly...

I have linked pictures of my completed models into the site.  I also updated it with models that others pointed out that I missed.
