Kit Bash - The WSS Were Leiahwin - 9/19/11 Update
Posted by padakr on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 7:56 PM

It's been a rough year and I haven't had much enthusiasm to build lately.  I sat down the other day and tried to motivate myself.  Worked a bit on a couple of unfinished models, not doing very much.

I looked at my almost finished Stuka and decided I didn't want to finish it.  Then my eyes fell on a little snap-tite SR-71 I threw together a couple of weeks ago (my friend Bud kept winning raffle prizes at a model show last month, he grew tired of picking prizes out of the pile and let me have one).

Inspiration struck and out came my Dremel and X-acto saw.  Soon I had.....a mess:

A little more work and I had the major deconstruction complete, and most of the major pieces ready for re-assembly:

At this point, what I was trying to make started to congeal in my mind.  A space ship of some kind.  And then I thought of the science fiction universe my son created:  The Star Nation of Wepernia.  I decided I was making a craft from his universe, to honor his memory.  I envisioned a long range scout of some kind, but with the very aggressive culture he created, I knew it had to have big guns.  Thus was born the WSS Were Leiahwin, a Chasen class scout ship.

So, now I have the major assembly completed:

Next up is to start adding all kinds of doo-dads all over.  I want to break up the symmetrical look I have right now.  Antennas, sensors, that sort of stuff.

Thanks for looking.

Looks good so far. I've got an idea...you could make some sort of scout fighter with the remains of your Stuka and the SR-71...

Keep up the good work.

Hello all,

Thanks for the kind comments.  I hope the final product lives up to your expectations.

Unfortunately, this isn't the final update.  I have not made much progress in the past two weeks.  Went on a small vacation about two weeks back, the wife and I took the pups to Assateague:

This is Ell-Tee, he was James' dog (and now mine), and this is his first trip to the beach.

And this is Tori, my wife's spoiled princess, who's been to the beach a couple of times before:

Anyway, I digress.  The progress I have made is a kind of "two steps forward, one step back" thing. I had to remove what I am refering to as the command pod.  The mating surface of the pod and the opening I cut in the hull weren't mating.  My attempts at filling only resulted in a spongy connection.  So, I ripped the thing off and glued a sheet of styrene to the bottom of the pod.  Twice.  The first time I ended up cutting too much off while trimming the sheet flush, so I didn't trim so close the second time.  Then I glued the whole thing to the hull.  Once that sets, I'll trim the sheet and fill and shape the join.

I also added cooling vent tubes to the top and bottom gun pods.  They both offset to the right of mid-line, my first attempt at breaking up the streamlined, symetrical look.  I am trying to be bery patient and not start adding delicate bits before I am finished with my heavy-handed sanding.

Finally, I got rid of the "SR-71" from the display stand.  I think I wil print up some custom decals with the name of the ship.

Two photos for now.  I hope to have more soon.

Thanks,

Paul

Unfortunately, this isn't the final update.  I have not made much progress in the past two weeks.  Went on a small vacation about two weeks back, the wife and I took the pups to Assateague:

I was worried for a sec.  While scrolling down the pups were the first new pics I saw and my first thought was "How is he going to use those in the project ( kinda like the "You made a vampire Pomeranian?!" in that Blade movie )?"

Now you know why I include that bit about the Hubble at the bottom of my posts.

Ok.  Vacation pics.  Much better.

As for the model, the important thing is making some kind of progress, even if it doesn't make a dramatic difference in one sitting.  You can eat a whale as long as you keep at it one bite at a time ( no offense to whale lovers out there, it's just an expression ).

WARNING - I'm having trouble with my photo links.  Clicking on a picture will get you an "Open or Save" prompt.  I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of that.  Links fixed, switched to Photobucket.

Okay - this project languished for a while.  Paint issues, life issues, all that.  Anyway, I tried to get it finished for Mosquito Con in the spring, but didn't.  So I decided I would finish for Penn Con, and I did.

The custom decals were a pain.  First attempts didn't do so well as the Krylon coat was either too thin and the ink ran, or too thick and the decals cracked (and the ink ran).  Finally got some Testors decal bonder and that did a better job.  But I think I may switch to using a color laser printer (and paper).  I've read that doesn't need the sealer coat (or at least, not as much).

Anyway, here are the shots of the final work:

Thanks for looking,

Paul

Yeah, the air intake from the Revel Stuka turned upside down and stuck on the top does look kind of 1950's, some old Chevy pick-up or something.

Someone else who looked at it thought it looked like a dog's head.  Didn't occur to me until after he said it, yep, see that too.
