I usually start with a base coat of Tamiya XF-55, give it a good acrylic gloss coat, then, working with raw umber oil paint (thinned a bit along with a drop of Japan Dryer added), take a wide flat brush, brush on a liberal coat of it, then with a clean wide brush, start wiping it off - a few wipes on the part, wipe the brush dry, wipe more off the part, etc., until it starts to look like wood grain. When dry, a coat of Tamiya clear orange seals the deal, as illustrated on the sidewall of my WnW Se.5a.
