2020 IPMS in San Marcos, TX

Great news!  Being from San Antonio, it will be a short commute.  Any idea as to the dates?

That's why I'm not a member. I live in the Chicago suburbs. Not only is there only 1 decent ipms club in the area, It would necessitate me driving or flying all over the country to some mostly small towns to attend. I know it has been here before but with a lack of clubs and apparently interest in Chicago and other major markets it seems not to be very attractive to modelers in major metro areas.

Convention center space costs in major markets vs secondary markets is one of the reasons for going to places such as Phoenix in the middle of the summer or San Marcos

The San Antonio Club is sponsoring the event along with Austin and Houston and others in central Texas.  I thought the Austin Club was sponsoring the event but it turns out that San Antonio is just as expensive.  Our city council just can't stop adding excise taxes on conventioners which other cities will take advantage of.  Thank you San Marcos, now I can attend a convention without having to drive for 15 hours.

Why is nobody talking about this event and are shipping ahead to Las vegas 2021?

I haven't seen anything on the IPMS site yet except for a decal design, unless I am looking in the wrong place.

Go to NATS2020.COM.   It hasn't been linked to the National site yet.  The website is still being populated but has some basic info (hotels, SanMarcos Chamber of Commerce, vendors).  For you non-Texicans, click the 'Come and Take It' flag icon for a wiki history of the Texas Revolution and the significance of the Gonzalez Flag.  

No theme information yet.   The organizing committee had some issues defining criteria at their presentation before the National Competition Committee

Do you have to be an IPMS member to go to one of these big events? To participate/compete in them?

You only need to be an IPMS memeber to enter a model.  Anyone can go to the event.

Membership may also be a priority determination factor for some of the limited-space/additional cost activities such as the Grex airbrush hands-on seminar session.

Err, Umm, No.   You missed it by about 50 miles.

San Marcos is 45 minutes to an hour north of San Antonio (depending on the traffic & time of day).

The downdown San Antonio/Riverwalk district was determined to be too expensive for a convention with the numbers which we tend to draw.  The more room-nights we can offer, the cheaper the convention center space is, especially in major city destinations.

As noted in an earlier post, while the show is being run by IPMS San Antonio it is being put on closer to Austin.    Make plans to fly into Austin Bergstrom International airport. It will be a half-hour or less via the 80 MPH tollway.  The organizing committee will be running shuttle buses from ABI to the convention center and adjacent hotels.   Houston's airports will be 3 to 4+ hours, as will Dallas/Ft Worth.   As noted, SanAntonio International will be roughly an hour.

    I don't know about logisitics but Is there a way to fly into New Braunfels Municipal Airport? It is only 20 minutes away from San Marcos. I might have to renew my membership, but I definitely hope to be there.

   Arriving in Austin and dealing with their Traffic can be a nightmare. Besides there is nice hospitality in New Braunfels and a pleasant way to drive and talk about models. There's a Rail Museum in New Braunfels too. If you want you can take AMTRAK to San Marcos too!

For that matter, just blow off New Braunfels entirely and fly direct into San Marcos.

No commercial service.  All of four miles from beautiful downtown San Marcos.  

There is a CAF wing based there.  Its big enough to handle a C-47 regularly

My in-laws live in Austin so I'll probably drive there from Dallas, stay the night and spend the day at the show then drive back with my haul.

 I just can't wait, I have a ship entry that I hope will set them up a little.

The San Marcos airport website says that the FBO operators at the airport can provide courtesy cars, limos, or taxis for patrons ariving at the airport.   It also links to the SMTXTheBus website, the red-line of which goes to the Embassy Suites.  You might have to change buses at the transit center, but you can get there from here.
