It was held in NY back in 1981 according to the rock show tour shirt  from 2000 in Dallas.

All seriousness aside ... if you want the show in your neighborhood you need to talk it up among your local club and put together a bid.   You will need to get humpin' because you need to have all your ducks in a row: dates, venue, business plan, etc.   You need to present the bid to the National Board two years in advance of the show.  That means that the next east coast (2008) show will be decided in Kansas City next year.  You may already be late.  When we put the show on in Dallas in 2000 we presented in 1998 and had been working on our presentation for a year.

Get busy now, because it you don't make your bid in KC for 2008 the Eastern Region won't be back up for a convention until 2011.

            While it is a great idea, the cost of running a convention in NYC would be astronomical.   Paying for the convention space alone would pretty much rule it out.   True the exposure would be greater if we could entice a spectator to pay $45.00 for daily admission. A member registration fee in the ball park of $150.00. A trophy package sponsorship $300.00.      Discounted hotel rates anywhere from $250-$400.00 per night, single occupancy.  Get the picture! 

            I would love to see a convention in NYC.....as long as I didn't have to pay to attend.

I have tried to talk our clubs into sponsoring it again here in Utah say in 2010.  It was done back in 1980 but the club (only 1 then) lost a lot of money.  The recent shows have been getting bigger.

Lots of neat things to see here, Hill Aerospace Museum with one of the largest aircraft collections out west. Ft. Douglas Museum, with some armor and cannons on display.  The Model Car Museum, SLC is home to the GSL contest every other year.  There are some classic builds at the museum and their reference section is phenominal.  Browning Gun Museum, located at the site of the Gathering in Ogden along with a model railroad set up and a gem museum.  Also some real trains on display.

Announced last night at the 2007 IPMS banquet -- the 2009 convention & show will be in Columbus, OH.

Oh, and if you haven't heard the 2008 show will be in Virginia Beach.

2010 is scheduled for the West.  Sacramento & Portland probably already have a leg up since they made a bid this time for the 2009 show since a mid-States organization didn't submit their intent to bid by the cut-off date.

Okay, anyone out there know what group(s) are here in the Metro Milwaukee area that can get this back to Milwaukee???

Looking at that shirt above, it was in Milwaukee in 1979...28 years ago, & Des Plaines, IL, ('burb of Chicago) in 1964...43 years ago. Yet Atlanta has had it 4 times, California 5 times, Seattle 3 times. (in the time from 1964-1999, per the shirt), and the shirt covers 35 years?

Yet Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, & Wisconsin only once, and not at all in Minnesota or the Dakotas?

Chicago has the McCormick Center or the  Donald E. Stephens Center. (Formerly the Rosemont Convention Center)

Milwaukee has the Midwest Airlines Center, (2 levels) and U.S. Cellular arena attached to it.

I think that it would be awesome to go to this but I will always have a limited budget.

I realize that there are plenty out there that can go to these things every year & money seems to not be an issue, (or so it seems, it's a perception thing y'all, don't get mad.).

It's great that they spread it around the country, (I saw Detroit on the list), but a bit more evenly. The upper Midwest does not seen to have adequate representation.

You're looking at the 2000 shirt from Dallas.   One which is missing is 2001 in Chicago (Rosemont), Illinois.

Others are 02 - Virgina Beach, 03 - Oklahoma City, o4 - Phoenix, 05 - Altanta, 06 - Kansas City, 07 - Orange.

Are you a member of IPMS?   If not why not?   You need to join and get to know the modelers in the area and talk up the concept of a convention in your area.   Maybe start small with a regional. 

What you need is a viable group of dedicated people who are willing to work for three (or more) years to make it happen.    You need to put together a business plan (It is a business, afterall) which addresses how much it is going to cost, where the money is going to come from,  and what the attendees get for their money.

Moaning about it not coming to your neighborhood isn't going to make it happen.   Someone has to get off their rump and drive the project.    The successful convention bidding cities have people who are willing and able to drive the bus.

    Let me lead with ...I'm not 'moaning' about it, hence the first question in my previous post. If my pointing out the things that I have been able to determine from the information that I have at hand and asking how to find out about getting it here falls into the catagory of "moaning about it", I really hope that is not a representation of the IPMS, for then my mind will have been made up right there.

    IPMS? What does it do, what can one get out of it, what does it get from me, who's in charge, etc.?

    I was reading about it on some other posts & there seems to be some concern as to it's effectiveness & it's worthwhileness & folks getting there moneys worth. I am merely attempting to gather information, (facts preferably, not opinion).

      Is this just a matter of asking for it to come here, (with a biz pln & bid all ready at hand)? From your data provided above Atlanta has had it now 5 times & California 6 times. My interpretation of what you are saying is that it's just that no one from the area put in a bid, and there is no politiking involved. (Well Milwaukee put in a bid but Jim Bob made me mad & he's from up there, so we'll decline their bid.)

     What does the "business plan" involve? Can I find a master list of IPMS units? Is it sufficient that a plan & bid gets submitted, or is there the "dog & pony show" that must accompany it?

Whats in it for you.  You get a quarterly magazine (much improved) which has been called by some a rival to some of the slick European modeling magazines.   Many hobby shops offer discounts to IPMS members.  Most of all you get to meet other people with like interests and learn from them (history, techniques, other modeling genre's, etc.).   Modeling is a solitary hobby - this widens your horizons

Your business plan is something which needs to be worked out in advance of the bid.   You may work on it for a year in advance getting the best deals.   Where will the show be held [facilities, square footage, cost, parking]?  What about lodging - is it part of the show package/attached to the venue - or is it across town,  cost per room, etc?  Travel packages - can we get to your city easily or is it 3 stops on an airline and a busride?  Dates -- the IPMS Constitution requires the meeting to be held in June-August (to facilitate family travel).  What else is there to do - museums, tours, etc.  You can get help from the local convention & visitors bureau

You go before the IPMS Executive Board with your bid - this is what we have to offer to you.  The board considers yours versus other bids and determines the best (value, amenities, package).  Past performance is also figured in.   If the group pulled off a successful show which left people happy about the results then that will go farther toward giving them the show in the future.    I'm not going to say that politicing doesn't happen but we're all adults (or most of us are).   Some groups  had to bid over several successive time periods to get the show.  There is a dog & pony show.  In 1998 when Dallas won their bid for 2000 we had a slide show.   Now they are slick Powerpoint presentations.

I don't know why Milwaukee or the upper Midwest has not had a show in so many years.

Sorry about the tone of my post, but I see it all too often.  People read & hear about this model show and want to go and see the models and want to shop in the worlds largest hobby shop.  But they don't have any idea as to what is involved behind the scenes to stage the thing.

First, you need an IPMS chapter large enough and with the energy and commitment to carry this off. As Ed says, it's a three year ordeal. A rehional is a two year job.

It also requires a rather large operating budget. Even a regional event starts with a budget in the range of $1500 to 2000. You will be hampered by venues not understanding your needs and not all that interested in cutting a deal since you won't be coming back year after year.

IPMS is run by a board of officers elected from and by the general membership and several appointed officials and governed by a rather elaborate constitution. The national convention is run by a sponsoring club or set of clubs who share the work, risks and hopefully profits. The conventions has its own set of rules administered by the National Convention Committee.

What it gets from you is $25 a year. Anything else is offered by you to promote the hobby and the society. What you get is the Journal, now worth the price of admission on its own, the ability to enter in the national competition, discounts at the regional events, and the ability to post on the society's forum and one more voice in running the society.

Its something which you have time to talk about and work toward.   Given the typical East/Mid/West scheduling cycle and the fact that the next mid-States convention was just awarded for 2009,  the next year which a middle region site will be up for a convention will be 2012.   That bid will be heard in 2010 (location TBD).  You should start actively working the plan sometime in 2009.

Just a thought:

Indianapolis will have a brand new (and much much larger) convention center right next door to the new football stadium. When they had it in Ind last time it seems to me that they had it in the World War Memoral right down town. If that's too expensive, then they could have it at the State Fairgrounds on the cheap!

     If I remember right the year 2009 is the year for the Chicago Tool show, and that would mean that for most of the month of August and September McCormick Place will be tied up moving machinery in and and out (world's largest machine tool show). Don't know much about St. Louis, but think Cincinatti would be a nice place as well. Or maybe Louisville so we all could visit Ft. Knox (Dayton Ohio?)
