In the mid-1950s, Hiller constructed a series of innovative Flying Platforms for an Army-Navy program as a one-man flying vehicle that the pilot could control with minimal training. The pilot simply leaned in the desired direction and the platform would follow. The platforms, which utilized the aerodynamic advantages of the ducted fan, were incapable of tumbling, because if the pilot leaned over too far, the platform would pitch up and slow down.

The M1035, M1035A1 and M1035A2 HMMWVs were the soft-top ambulance configuration of the HMMWV family. The vehicles had no armor protection for crew and patients and were used to transport casualties from the battlefield to the medical aid stations. It's chassis, mechanical components and general performance are the same as other models of the M998 series.
The M1035 and M1035A1 were capable of transporting 2 litter patients and a heater was provided for patient comfort. The M1035A2 could carry 2 litter or 3 ambulatory patients. These vehicles provided mobility for emergency situations and a quick link between battlefield casualties and emergency services not readily available on the front lines of battle.
Fully-loaded M1035, M1035A1, and M1035A2 ambulances could climb road grades as steep as 60 percent (31 degrees) and traverse a side slope of up to 40 percent (22 degrees). The vehicles could ford hard bottom water crossings up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) without a deep water fording kit and 60 inches (152 centimeters) with the kit.
An improved variant with the A1 series modifications was also produced. The M1035A2 was longer, due to the new bumpers, part of the A2 series improvements, and could be equipped with an optional 9,000 pound self-recovery winch.

USS Bradley DE-1041 I am including this ship as she was my ship's (USS Ranger) escort for most of my Vietnam deployment in the Tonkin Gulf in 1972. She followed us all the way from San Fransisco Bay to North Vietnam and then provided plane guard duty for many months afterward. I was hoping that I would be able to get post 1041 so I could get this ship a little public attention.
