This is something that has been brought up from time to time on the forums.

There have been some very influential members of this forum since my first day.  Some have gone away but some remain.  It would be cool to see something that could recognize them.  Like a wall of fame or wall of recognition.  If a way could be found that it would not be just a popularity contest could it be feasible?  Some have been almost common usernames that a great majority of the members knew of them at the very least.  I know there will be pros and cons for such a recognition but I cannot help but think that something like that would promote increased activity among the members.  If nothing more than the building of good will among the members it may be worth it.

Just some thoughts.

How about we try a "reboot" here good Joe. You're right , it kind of got off track. Something for the longstanding individuals who weathered every change and still kept on posting not only good information but providing a good atmosphere. I see that being worthwhile.

No need to remove the thread. It has been quite civil, and folks are raising valid points from all angles of the issue.

Post counts still exist here when you go to a member's profile. The medals/stars were a neat little touch, that were like other forum's "newbie/expereinced/addict" member catagories, based upon post count, but not displaying that so openly.

In the long run, I think we each figure out for ourselves who can be most helpful in whatever area we are interested in. Be that in tools, techniques, reference, history, kit knowledge, etc.

Bish

I actually like the sound of that idea. There are some mebers of this forum who have not jst been very influential on here but in the hobby as a whole. I know my own standards would not be anything like they are without the guys on here.

But, i can see the obvious drawback that others may well bring up. Who gets to choose, who gets upset because they don't agree with who is on it. I think the mods might just see it as having a possably bad effect on some people.

I like it, but i can imagine many others won't.

I have to agree with Bish and others on this matter. Philosophically, I like it but the pitfalls of which, and there are many, would likely outweigh the benefits. The problems of objectivity, diplomacy and ego would be too much to overcome imho.

Hi , Joe :

It's taken me some time to catch up on what I read so here I am . Now based on what you're saying I agree .Now because i agree is moot .Why ? Well , I have been put into contests ( my models ) by my students and friends .Did I know ? Absolutely NOT .

How do you imagine I felt when i won a class where many of my students were also in ?

It was a general class of " Postwar Jets " I had built a Natural Metal plane as a display for the guys and gals to shoot for in their builds . Because of my choices in markings and such the bird stood out like a sore thumb .

When I went to the Awards ceremony for my Veterans , How do you think I reacted when my name was announced for national Gold in Postwar Jets ? Yes I am a Vet of two services .Yes , i served with pride .Yes , by working with " My " vets I felt I was giving back to the ones who came after me .

I evn blush when I win at an I.P.M.S. contest . Shy ? No . I just never liked being the person in the picture . Let someone who has had to work harder have the recognition . I liked the stars . But alas -no more !

I will still post Anything that I think will help . Even going so far as not looking and resurrecting a long dead post .The newer generation needs to know and also see how advances have changed the original reply . Don't you think so ? Tanker - Builder

I was on a forum once that had a "reputation" system. When you joined, you were given a single green bar under your avatar. You could get as much as 10 little bars to measure your "rep" in the forum. the cool thing was is that you couldn't get bars by post count or time on the forum. other members have to actually give you + or - rep. Every post by a member had a little scale icon you could click on to give that person positive or negative rep points. So basically the more people like what you contribute to the forums the more rep bars you could get. Of course if your not a very nice person or contribute negativity or break forum rules you could get neg. rep. and have red bars. It was cool IMO and fair.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like one of those forums filled with elites who will rub each others' backs.

Joe;

Speaking for myself, as I said earlier , I would have to say no . You see , Although I have my share of awards , I still like to quietly help others .Their accomplishments are my reward .Appreciate your thoughts .There are those who would agree with you .I choose to remain always just--Tanker - Builder

You’re too modest TB. Your many contributions are quite positive.

In order to avoid showing any type of favouritism I'll not quote any one preson, but rather all have shown a deeper thought, and intellectual understanding of each others' point of view.

Bish your first post was thoughtful, and well said. Stikpusher, and Doog - both of your posts were thoughtful, and poignant (to the point), and hearfelt. Well thought out, and eloquently said through most of this thread, and historically so in many cases. I too wish that I had something that others thought was important enough to recognise, but I'm simply glad to come here to share what I know with others who share the same passion that I do about the same subjects. I may not be the most popular, but when I say something it's not to pad my post count. I don't mind that it doesn't show up. I'd rather be remembered for what I said rather than how many times I've posted. The quality is not related to the quantity of what you've said.

Let me put in my two cents worth. If you want to do this, then try it this way: Add a line (under the user name) that says how many posts people thought was interesting, or important, one line under that one that shows how many posts people thought was good, helpful, one under that line for funny, and how many posts that people didn't like at all in another line under that one. I suggest lime green with a black line in one space to show up neutrally in the white background. Much like the lines on www.studioscalemodelers.com to denote when the members there like what the particular post says by who said it, and why. The longer the green, and the shorter the black in the line represents how many posts members "approved" as opposed to the number of the ones that they've made overall.

www.scalemodeladdict.com uses the monikers "recreational user, habitual user, addict, needs intervention." for the number of posts that their members make. This would make a basic representation of what the majority of members think of the particular members' contribution to the forum, as well as the cause of modeling in general. This is after all Kalmbachs baby, and their bread and butter - let them decide if this is to the best interest of their site since the sale of magazines is how they make their money. The more views a thread gets shows the longevity of this forum, and its' members as well as the importance of the subject matter. I say that the true test of a members' importance is the experience that they share, and what they have to offer the community as a whole. It all depends on what their own perogative is as whether, or not to stay on the forum. I've been spotty myself, and I apologise for that, but life just throws things at you that you can't always see. We lost a wonderful member on hobbytalk last year, and one here on finescale. They will be sorely missed, and forgotten as time goes on, but will live on in the hearts of those who knew, and loved them! That's all I have to say on the subject. Thank you all for participating, and thank you for posting this thread.

You know, I've been wanting to say pretty much the same thing for a long time, but was afraid to sound petty. But since Nathan opened the door I really miss the post count and stars.

I realise the post count is avail if one wants to look for it, but it's not the same.

I could go on as to why etc, but I won't.

Because as the "Talking Heads" put it in song... "youre talking alot, but you're not saying anything"

or Simon and Garfunkel said it... "People talking without speaking,"

Certain folks here made oodles of posts to elevate their post count without actually contributing anything of substance to the forum. Either of help, or even to lighten the moment with some wit.

Did you really say that? You are one smart guy.

IMO way too much attention paid to a fairly worthless set of activities, which is the way it should stay.

Now, that being said, Joe you have a fan with me. You always host a 12.7.41 GB and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But you do it. Please take that with you.
