I find it to be okay.  Certainly good for the price :-)

One of the reasons I tried it was to try Cortana, but I find my computer is not powerful enough.  I wonder how powerful a computer needs to be to make it work with Cortana.

My download came with a bunch of stupid aps, and it has been a bit of a chore getting rid of them.  Some are downright obtrusive and start themselves, or at least advertise themselves :-(

Thank you very much for that link.  Much appreciated!  AS to weird problems I have had with the new OS, error popups for programs have been coming up BEHIND the window that is open.  At first it basically locked up the machine until I figured out what was happening.  I have looked all over trying to figure out what is causing it to do that.  That is the main reason I consider Win 8 a throwback.

It is possibly a switch I set way back at original install, but cannot seem to find half the stuff I used to be able to find with XP.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As to Win 10 will prabably wait just a touch longer.  I already have 95% of my files on an external USB hard drive.  Only the current working stuff is on the machine and I copy that stuff to the external on a somewhat regular basis.

Made it easy when I built the new machine last Dec.

Apparently a Microsoft exec or someon with the Windows project said that Win10 will be the last version of Windows. I don't know how true this is but I'm also airing on the side of a new OS sometime in the future. But in the meantime, as a sucker for punishment, I'm going to take advantage of a free upgrade I signed up for and upgrade from 8.1 (which I really like; 8.1 and 7 are my favorites) to 10. After I upgrade my RAM from 4gb to 8gb. And get my 8.1 OS and drivers fully updated.

Well, I have attempted several times to load Windows 10 and it goes thru all the motions, click on the "download now" box, it blinks a couple of times, a couple of boxes appear and the pc re starts itself and nothing else happens. As I mentioned a few evenings ago I found on my screen a box with 25% downloaled notice and I shut down the PC to stop it. I wonder if that threw a wrench in the system?

No, nothing at all. I click on the tab to download it and it goes thru it's thing, shuts down and restarts but still on Windows 7, and working normal. 

Now you know why I won't upgrade Win 10. The trouble is, sometimes you have to find out if your PC has enough memory AND hard drive space to run Win 10. If you don't, well you're not going to have an easy time installing - especially a downloaded version.

When Vista Ultimate first came out, folks were quick to denounce Vista as nothing but a piece of junk. Not true. If you read up on what is the maximum RECOMMENDED allowances for memory and hard drive space to run Vista, you will not have problems. I suspect it's the same with Win 10.

Either way, Microsoft's got everybody where they want them. To force folks to download it or buy the program to install yourself. Not gonna happen with me. I'll stick with the hated Win 8 until it's time for me to get a new PC or laptop. 

BTW... Mac Apple is starting to look better every minute as my next desktop and laptop. XD

Hmm, you might give it a try from the Windows 10 upgrade website. You can use the Upgrade Now feature or alternately you can create an installation disc.

You have hit on key point right here. Any time you upgrade your OS or just about any other software, you MUST make sure that you meet the minimum requirements for the software. Even then, if you barely meet those requirements, don't expect it to run super. You can't turn a Ford Focus into a Lamborghini Murcielago by upgrading the ECM firmware, the same applies to computers and electronic devices. Look at the iPhone for instance. Only the most recent generations will Apple even attempt to install the latest iOS on because they know the hardware on the older stuff just wont handle it. The difference is that Apple does this for you, Microsoft puts that responsiblity on the user for the most part.

The MS message says my system meets all the requirements so I have no clue.

Look into your own PC's specs yourself then go back and go back and find out exactly what is the minumum specs in order to run Win 10 smoothly.

I've always been a firm believer in making sure I had far more than the minimum required to run any program required. That's why I've never, ever had issues with Vista Ultimate back a years ago. Unfortunately my last PC with Vista Ultimate, the motherboard and the power supply fried up on me. I had that PC for about 7-8 years with no issues running with Vista.   

Check for all avalable updates on your PC, if there are more than the windows 10, then it may be a case of the machine installing too many at once. They all don't play nice. Good luck.

Yeah make sure that the computer is completely up to date before installing Win10.  Also make sure that all of your installed programs will play nice with 10. Search for the exact program and make sure you are looking for your exact version if yours isn't the most current one. 

All requirements met, all updates are current. As a matter of fact when I check for updates, the Windows 10 ready to upgrade box shows up. 

Heh - and to think we would have gotten Win 10 on all PCs at my workplace. I guess the top IT Network Admins. even have reservations on upgrading. I guess this says a lot about Win 10.

My PC is well over 7 years old but it's still good and I like my Windows 7 so no biggie if I can't update it cause someone said W 7 updates will stop by 2020, 4 years from now. 

LOL, oddly enough we still use win 7 at HP..well HP inc (the printer side) actually after the recent split. HP enterprises (the computer side) probably went to 10 by now.

I bit the bullet and upgraded tonight after my PC told me it was going to start the upgrade in 7 minutes anyway. Funny thing is, I have my laptop connected to a 24 inch monitor, which wont show anything on the screen since the upgrade, and I haven't touched any of the connections.

I believe in Win 10 if you are using dual monitors ( PC screen and external monitor) you have to designate which is the "main" screen. Should be a tutorial out there.

 

Somewhere along the line the OS was downloaded to my PC. I do not recall ever seeing a choice about it. I held off finishing the install but ultimately I was tired of the prompts to do so. So I did it.

I did have one glitch where the upgrade messed up the color profile for my monitor. Other than that, I have found the OS to be very very stable. Also, the OS seems to install pretty quickly at boot up. So, I am not sitting there waiting for the PC to boot like with some of the other OSs I dealt with.

I agree with what others have said. There is a bit of a learning curve to get through. Also, I am not a fan of the Apps they push on you. But, you can turn them off. One thing that I found to be a pain is that they push through patches/updates at their whim. So, if you are working on something that uses decent system resources, the PC can get bogged down as it is taking in data from their update. My fix for that is to turn off my internet connection when working on something system taxing. 

Overall, in terms of performance, I don't have any complaints. I really like the fast boot ups and with how stable it is.

I went ahead and updated Saturday. No major issues so far other than getting used to the new interface. I may have to give the classic shell a whirl.

Only little thing is one old game from 2002 now runs really slow and choppy even in Win7 mode. Other than that everything works fine.

Well, I finally was able to download W10 to my PC and things look to be normal except for some new icons and learning my way around the new system and the setup and location of certain things. Might as well take advantage of the free download.
