Funny thing, Football is played with the feet in the rest of the world. The USA is the only country that refers to it as soccer! I have watched some NFL every now and again and enjoyed it, but it does not have the flow of an English premier league game.

Rugby is the nearest thing world wide to your version of football but without the armour. Some great games being played right now in the World Championships in Japan.

I have multiple hobbies including modeling, wargamming, hunting and shooting as well as watching football (college and NFL).  One of the most awesome events I've experienced with my son was walking into the stadium at Notre Dame on a game day.  The atmosphere was simply electric and we will both remember it for the remainder of our lives.  That doesn't happen at the workbench.

We own some land in West Texas.  It isn't a huge piece of property but we have cattle, deer, quail, turkey and feral pigs (I hate feral pigs because they are very, very destructive).  Three stock tanks hold bass and catfish. We practice conservation and work with Texas Parks and Wildlife to improve wildlife habitat. We are good stewards of the land.  Last year I was on a woods walk and watched some deer watching me.  We all agreed to go our separate ways. I heard Bobwhite quail calling to each other as they prepared for another night. As I returned to the cabin near dusk, it was misting and a north wind was rising.  The warm lights coming from the cabin told me my family was safe and sound.  That doesn't happen at the workbench.

I played football.  Super fun game, super boring horrible practice.   I love the game, but ultimately feel it should be stopped as kids are getting bigger and stronger and faster.  I was 6' 195lb tight end back in 1980.  My sons were 6'2 210 as juniors.   And way faster and stronger than I was.  Maybe make the field bigger.  Dont know but at the pro level they are deadly strong/fast.

Thanks,

John

i grew up building models, but was a late bloomer for sports. I played Little League baseball then followed that up with the high school game. Never played football, but did enjoy watching it. The late 70s in Houston were awesome in the Luv Ya Blue era (Houston Oilers with Bum Phillips, Earl Campbell, and Dan Pastorini).

I am a Texas Aggie, a school known for its football program. I will watch the Aggies likely until the day I die. It is a fairly unique deal in college football, where the fans in the stands are referred to as the 12th Man ( no, the Seattle Seahawks did not originate that term), and have a strong connection to the football program because our standing throughout games signifies our readiness to leave the stands and step onto the field. (No, it is not actually going to happen, but it did happen back in 1922, when a student by the name of E. King Gil came out of the stands to offer his playing services after a slew of Aggies had to leave the game due to injuries).

I have given up on the NFL. They are far too political for my tastes these days, and I will say that the Dallas Cowboys wanted to honor murdered police officers with a helmet sticker, and the league told them no, that told me everything I needed to know. I will never again spend any money on attending any NFL game, and since the police officer/Dallas thing, I may have watched a grand total of 10 minutes on TV.

i still root heavily for the Houston Astros, but that organization rubbed me wrong earlier this season. I took a hand-held camcorder to Minute Maid Park as my daughter's school choir was performing the national anthem prior to a game. I was told at the gate that I was not allowed to bring the camera in. Later, I checked their website, where I found that all forms of cameras with typical lenses, and video cameras, are in fact allowed in. I fired off a strongly worded email to the Astros, but curiously I never heard back from them. It is likely I will never bother going to one of their games in person again although I remain a fan of the team.

As for modeling, I typically turn the TV on at my work bench to a college football game when I am out there in the fall. On Sundays I listen to music, typically movie scores, or watch movies on Amazon Prime or something I own on BluRay. During the week, it is music or talk radio.

Well Now:

That's okay.I just don't get the absolute devotion of some folks is it, I guess. Really? A whole house furnished with team logos?

To me, following my favorite NFL team was a source of pride in the area in which I was born and raised. My college years were spent at the home of the NY Jets. My Army years bounced me around areas where various other NFL teams were the local favorites. Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Oilers/Titans, NYG/NYJ, etc.

But I stayed true to my home team, raised my kids to root for my team. It maintains my long lost connection to my home state.

I did play football in junior high school and high school along with other sports. I found this plaque I earned in high school a month ago. I found out that it was fairly rare since many of the current members of the booster club had never seen nor heard of one.

Some people get way too fanatical, but I loved playing football and loved watching Monday Night Football as a kid. I don't know why, probably why I liked watching pro wrestling as a kid too.

Tanker Builder,

What's a "D.D."?  Designated Drinker?  The guy who consumed the most beers?  We got a lot of those at tailgate parties.  Stick out tongue

RealG;

You know that is something I forgot all about. Some of the best " Q " and Suds time has been at the tailgate when the Raiders were getting their #$%^# handed to them. But the Tailgating-Awesome. The biggest problem I saw was those who didn't have D.Ds and trying to fool the cops outside the gates! SFPD issued a lit of DUIs that night. Well, after every game at least!

Oh, and this. Even if you don't care for the game ,You still can be having fun as a follower fan ( Someone who likes the Tailgate parties ,Because of the team )

What I have seen over here is that football is an excuse to get together and eat!

When someone asked me if I went to the local college games, I said I had no interest in football.  They responded that the reason to go is for the tailgate barbecue in the parking lot!  Some of my coworkers do just that - enjoy a nice outdoor dinner while our team loses inside the stadium.

But kudos to those who enjoy a game, hopefully with friends and lots of chicken wings and suds.  When the friends go home, then it is time for modeling.  Seems reasonable to me.

The only televised sport I have interest in is Formula-1, but it’s for the technology, not watching mercurial (aka infantile) daredevils go round and round a track.  I only care when a new car or new feature shows up.  Don’t care for the hissy fit drama that sometimes unfolds.  I just like the cars.

At the end of the day, so long as something brings enjoyment, it’s all good.

Having grown up in Minnesota the only sport I ever cared about was hockey.  I never played "organized" hockey, preferring the midnight pick-up games at the park after they turned out the lights.  You can suddenly gain an understanding of mortality when you hear, but don't see, a puck whiz by your head at 75 miles per hour!  Big Smile

One of my favorite hockey moments was seeing the North Stars beat the Islanders in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981.  I was in the rafters of Met Center (later torn down and replaced by that god-awful Mall of America) for that game and the noise was insane.

But in later years I started to care less and less about hockey, and now it's been more than a decade since I've watched even a single game.  Football?  Never watch it.  Baseball?  Never watch it.  Basketball?  Never watch it.  Golf?  Sometimes watch it when I want to take a nap.

It was never about the cost of attending, or the ridiculous salaries of pro athletes, or anything else.  I think I've just mellowed so much with age, that all the chest-beating violent competition and rabid home-town fandom just seems stupid and silly to me now.

So instead, I now peacefully build models of terrible flying murder machines.
Yes, I see the paradox.

Cheers,
Mark

Along the lines of "The goal in football is to possess the football and not give up the football so that the running back can carry the football without having the football stripped by the defensive back in order to move the football down the football field and carry the football into the end zone."

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Las Vegas Raiders

Arizona Cardinals

Washington Pink Bunnies (Hey, sooner or later they are going to change their name)

Names like these don't make it worth watching anymore.

I did like listening to football while building, but mostly the local highschool games or through the Chiefs radio network where the actual annoucer of the game was broadcasted.  Listening to the major networks is like listening to nails on a chalkboard.  Those guys hardly announce the game and spend most of the time with gossip and spouting useless statistics.

Toj, I believe that Cbaltrin was being fecetious in his question as this is a modelling site not a football / sports site. Let's keep it light guys.

Hi, all.  Yes, it’s Toshi,

I’ve been away for a couple of months but have been busy with my and Mrs. Toshi’s health improvements.  As for the NFL?  I only started to watch football for the first time in my life since 2008.  It was an inspiration to see a 40yr. old Brett Favre as a Viking to play against his old team the Packers and saying nothing but positive words for the Packers and their fans after the game. That was my healing point and guide to do more; AKA: Modeling.

I now look forward to the NFL season as well as enjoying building with my 3yr. old grandson Ezra.  Corporate anything has it‘s ups and downs.  Think, Monogram, Revell, Tamiya etc. to name a few.  As bad as pro sports?  Maybe not but a business nonetheless.  Thats what the freedoms we in America enjoy.  Choices.  And thank you to all the vets that have served.

As for costs, everything and I mean everything is just ridiculously expensive and Mrs. Toshi and I for one can’t afford to go to a NFL game on a fixed income.  Even a musical concert cost is expensive.  So I stay home in comfort and watch several or all NFL Sunday games on NFL Redzone and enjoy models, family, and music thanking whatever God you believe in to be healthy and alive.

Your Friend, Toshi

I dont understand the question. TB’s post sounds more like a rant against pro sports, rather than a comparison between the two pastimes. I agree with everything TB said about the the cost of sports today, athletes salaries, and their attitudes towards the fans. But I’m still able to sit down and watch a game. I dont watch as much as I did a few years ago, but I still enjoy watching my home teams.

And sometimes, I even model while I’m watching football, so yes, you can have both.

Is it too much to have both?

Not really, but the antics of a few have pissed off a LOT of folks.

If one takes an action while wearing the uniform of an organization, that is not part of the organization’s primary function, and is outside the norms of standard conduct, and the organization does nothing to address the action, that is at the very least a tacit endorsement by the organization of that action. Most companies, organizations, agencies, etc. explicitly ban doing any such thing while in the pay of and uniform of that agency. That is not infringing upon their Constitutional 1st Amendment Right.

I enjoy most sports. I enjoy football as a game itself. I do not care for, to paraphrase Ike, the “profesional sports/media complex” that as grown up around us in the past half century. While the athletes can be admired for their skills, strength, stamina, etc., in the long run, it is only a game. Their exertions and activities decide or affect nothing aside from entertaining a number of people for a short time.

It always makes me laugh when people talk about their favorite team and say “we” in the sentence. The person is not a player on the team, on the support staff of the team, or some other peripheral payed member. They are not out there on the field participating in the event. They are a spectator, who is supporting one side or another. Nothing more, nothing less. They make no material contribution to the contest, only financial to those put on the contest.

I second the motion of models and music.

My take on football is this; why would I want to spend my hard earned money to go see 22 grown men, supposedly college educated, chase each other around a muddy field and beat each other half to death risking serious brain and bodily injuries for the simple possession of an object that in the final evaluation bears a striking resemblance to a turd wearing shoelaces?

And I second that too.
