Out of pocket for a bit
Posted by keavdog on Saturday, June 11, 2022 4:51 PM

I'm in the process of moving to Arizona - Stik and I will be neighbors  Stick out tongue . My house wont be ready until December-February time frame but we are packing everything up and renting in AZ next month so I'll be out of the model building business for a while.  I'll still be on the forums though.

Appologies to the group builds I have joined.  I will still be on the forums and maybe have a chance to build my F1 car for my group build after we get settled.

Thanks,

John

No worries John.  Good luck with the move and get back to posting your awesome models when you get settled.  Tell Stik I said hello.

'Arizona' is kind of a large area .  .  . do you care to be more specific? Now, I'm not knocking the move, as I like and in fact grew up in the Phoenix area. Of course back then it was a small metropolitan area; now it's huge, if you include the surrounding cities. Scottsdale has quadrupuled, Chandler used to just be citrus groves and lettuce and cotton fields, Wickenburg used to be waaay out of town; now it's just northwest Phoenix.

"Why do I do this? Because the money's good, the scenery changes and they let me use explosives, okay?"

Thanks for letting us know, John. You will always be welcome to build in the GB's as time permits. I understand the moving thing, did it last year. Just now starting to feel settled. Looking forward to seeing you comment at the very least in the meantime however.

Hah, it's funny to see 2 people who have a good knowledge in this hobby be able to live near each other Big Smile. I'm interested to see if you both plan to build any future models together. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will turn out good.

Anyway. I hope you have fun moving to Arizona. At least it won't be as cold there as it is here in Chicago, even in June!

Wish you all the best with your move and temporary housing situation.

Don't know much about the area SW of Phoenix, but I've yet to find a place near Phoenix I don't like! Excited for you. Almost got to move there as a kid but Dad changed his mind.

This area is nice and outside the city itself. It is bordered by farmlands and wilderness areas, so it has less hustle and bustle. The only real downside to that is a lack of multiple nearby places to eat. Aside from a couple small restaurants and couple more fast food places, it's a bit of a drive down the hill and into town for all the others.

You have to watch out for those gila's.  I saw that movie about the giant gila monster, that thing must have weighed at least 40 tons.  Odd thing though, it didn't leave much in the way of tracks.

Sounds like my kind of place. Quiet areas near, but not in metro areas interest me of late. I will have to check out the area next time I'm down that way.

Sure nice to hear from you, Stik. It's been a while.

Thanks Greg. I was in the doghouse on here for the first quarter of the year, so I've been laying low even on this place since. I'll still be around, but no more GBs or WIPs on here for me, only finished builds. I'm more active over on SPAM, Kit Maker and IPMS nowadays.

Well nuts, wasn't aware of all that. Good to know where you are though.

Be nice to catch up regarding your first yr or so of retirement and AZ one of these days.

Well join up on SPAM. We have a PM system that works there. Not to mention several familiar faces from here.

I used Tupperware bins and foam packaging material for my armor builds and polyfil stuffing (a recommyfrom Tony/Tojo) for my aircraft builds. I had over 300 builds to move... this is how they were until I had shelves built.

Glad that worked out for you Stik,I still use the containers to bring builds to show at meetings, they are great for keeping stuff like figures, tracks, and different kinds of AM.

My wife also commandeered a few for use in the pantry for her spice bottles.

Tony I kept a few of the bins and some of the foam packing for the same purpose. Most of the rest of the bins and the poly fil went to our new neighbor who uses the stuff for her hobby, sewing. That poly fill stuff was a great idea and worked like a charm! Zero damage to my aircraft during the move. Thanks again!

Everything made it to Goodyear last Friday - super hot unloading but to be expected.  I had to make one more trip to get my built models.  Made it to San Diego and back today for the airlift - pretty pleased with the results, but will need to do more careful inspection under better light.  And... I have to do it again in 6 months

I loaded the figures and car models in a box.  It looks abusive but they travel pretty well like this.

And here is the airwing before making the 5 hour trip back to Goodyear

And after I pulled up to our apartment... the airbus decided to lose its wings...but I never glued them in. Pretty minor damage over all

There's no light in the 'office' yet so I took a pic on the counter - getting everything indoors as quickly as possible.  I'll send an office pic tomorrow.  Pretty good lighting in here

That's the last of the move out of California... had a pretty good rant as I crossed the Colorado.

Time to wind down for a couple days.

Thanks,

John

Glad the move worked for you, that's the way I moved my builds when I moved just to the next town, all laid out on the floor of a mini van I had then, worked well enough for a short move.

Glad you have that part of the move done. Nice that you had a manageable (5 hr) drive to move the important stuff in a dedicated transport op. Smile

 Hi!

Hey, Don't forget the area around Camp Oauchuca as well, I.E. Sierra Vista, AZ,

Beautiful Country there and the former CEO of B.A.D. Shipmodels lives there! He likes to look at the sky at night too. Awesome Telescope behind his house in it's own Building!

Congrats on your escape from the DPRC and welcome back to the USA. Wink I think that youre gonna like it here in AZ. I sure do.
Your packing and travel method for the collection looks like it went well and with no major mishaps. That alone is a great reason to celebrate. Our hobby does have that hazard of things going the opposite way.

G'day John, moving is always a hassle, but as far as your models go it looks like it went well. I've told my wife that the next house I move into will be 6 foot long, 1 floor and no windows. Big SmileBig Smile Back in the 60's I had a penfriend in Arizona. Lived in Tempe. From what I've seen it looks like a wonderful state.

In the photos of your move I couldn't help notice some figures in one of the boxes. Any chance you could post some pics of them when you're setteled?

Cheers

Dodgy.

Hey John,

Moving models cross country is a MAJOR hassle. I lost most of builds Crying. I think about the only thing that survived was my Akagi (thank God) There's a few boxes I'm a little hesitant to open still but really have nowhere to put them yet anyway. My MRAP survived as well BTW Big Smile. The movers were not nice to me!

Good luck John.
