Aggieman: Whoa!!! Great deal there! I know you mean, I'd have no where to put such huge models. Good luck with the remodeling of the garage for extra room!

Real G: Very cool! I'm curious how those periscope guards go. I've used PE ones but they always seem to get bent out of shape or lost. With fifteen in a box even I hopefully couldn't break or lose all of those.

It's been over a month into 2023, but I have refrained from any new kit purchases.  Surprise  But I have been buying aftermarket stuff for kits I already have:

T Rex's 1/35 US WW 2 tank periscope guards are an amazing example of 3-D printing.

My pitiful efforts using stretched sprue pales, withers, and falls off the modeling bush compared to these gems.  Now the $10 question - will they shatter when cut from their "sprues"?  Well, there are 15 of them provided.  I will soon find out what the "mortality rate" is!

DEF Models' 1/72 F-15E/K exhausts are another example of the dazzling quality that can be had from 3-D printed products.  I tried cutting them from their backing, and although the resin was brittle, they were easy to remove without damage.

And then the $100 question - what kind of monkey business does a modeler like myself have with an accessory for a "normal" kit?  Well... you see, about 30 years ago I bought a fabulous resin kit of a big, crabby Mobile Armor.

The guy who built the box art example swapped the poorly molded kit exhaust nozzles with two Verlinden F-15 sets (IIRC).  See those nozzles in the photo?  The kit ones look nothing like them.  They are kind of thick and crude, and have the "turkey feathers" on.  DEF Models' 3-D printed exhausts are perfect for lazy modelers like myself, to get high-def (DEF?) drop-in replacement parts with zero effort!  Yes, years of experience has taught me to be lazy.  I admit it.

The Eduard canopy mask set will be the first time I will try the "inside and outside" masks.

BTW, all these goodies (except the Buran) were sourced from Sprue Bros.

A couple more to post:

The Lanc I actually purchased last year at some point, but could not find any boxtop photo that I typically take every time I get a new kit, so sharing it here.

I was never really interested in the 1/32 B-17 due to its massive size.  Where the heck am I going to put it?  But a couple of things happened recently that swayed me to re-think my interest in that kit.  First, the disaster in Dallas last fall when we lost the Texas Raiders.  Second, when I re-organized my garage, I opened up just enough wall space to accommodate both this huge B-17 as well as the equally huge B-36 I recently purchased.  I found this giant Fortress on eBay for the lowest price I had seen, but even then I sat on it overnight.  Lo and behold, the seller had knocked $20 off the listed price, so I said "what the heck" and bought it.  Then I noticed that the seller lives in the same town as I, so when I reached out to see if he was amenable to a local meet to deliver, I saved the $20 delivery charge.

And upon opening the huge box with all that plastic, the size of the wings jumped out at me.  Yes, this is going to be a huge kit when I finally get it onto my work bench.

I built the AMT K'Tinga too back in the early '90s. I had a copy of ST:TMP I'd taped off TV that I watched the battlecruisers over and over. They looked a metallic aluminum to me so that's how I painted mine with brass accents.

I should still have the kit around somewhere but no idea where she got to...

The colors of the K'tinga are as contentious as the Zero-Sen's "ame-iro".  There is the "studio prop" vs the "on screen" colors, and there are entrenched fans for both.

Personally, "screen color" gets my vote, as that is how I saw it in the movie.  The overall color appears to be a very greyish green to me.  The tan sections almost look like heavily oxidised metal of some sort.  I like the colors in the photos on the side of the old AMT kit box.

Look online for photos of the Studio Model. I used those as my guide when I built the old AMT K'T' Inga. I used Humbrol Slate and Dark Slate as my base colors, and went from there...

That B-36 story sounds like me trying to lug home a set of kits I bought for my birthday in about 1977 or 1978 on my bike.  They weren't as big but multiple boxes tends to be problematic.

Thanks for the report on that K'tinga lighting set.  I'll probably just light her myself, as I have plenty of colored LEDs in my stash.

I bought the B-36 in 1980, so it was very close to your model adventure!

The K'tinga has a dorsal strobe light that goes "bee-do, bee-do, bee-do", not like the short pulses of a real strobe, so a standard blinking circuit should suffice.  The lighting kit has it right, and I watched the opening sequence in ST:TMP to confirm the blinking mode of the strobe.

I have a book titled "Star Trek The Motion Picture: Inside the Art and Visual Effects" but it is woefully insufficient with regard to the Klingon ships featured at the opening of that movie (which I honestly believe I am one of three people on the planet who thought this was a damn good science fiction movie).  So looks like I'll be freeze framing the movie like I did when I did an Iron Man figure to see how the K'tinga was painted.  It's not just that 50s hospital green look, there are hundreds of panels that get different shades of green and maybe some tan panels as well.  And then there is the lighting component of this build.  Thanks for pointing out that strobing light, I'll have to add a blinking circuit to my stash for this one.

Wow, I get caught away from the website and all this cool stuff!!!

Ben: Ya can't go wrong with storage or more tools!

SP: Great scores there on the kits and the decals!

BK: I built that same Arii Shiden years and years ago. It's a bit Spartan being an older kit but the detail and the fit is good. All the panel lines are recessed so they're way easier to rescribe where I sanded them out on top of the fulsilage.

Aggieman: WOW OH WOW!!! I picked up those Big-E and the K'Tinga years ago but not the lighting kits. Haven't started work on any of them simply since I don't have anywhere to put the assembled kits!

Awesome vintage Mongram bombers and the P-40. I loved the P-40 when I was a youngster, I think it's the AVG sharkmouth markings!

And very cool Snoopy Sopwith! And fantastic story behind it! The others sound cool too, looking forward to you posting the droids!

I love the old Monogram box top art, and I'm still ecstatic that I was able to snag Snoopy at such a low price given what I've seen those go for over the years.

Aggie, those are some fabulous scores! I'm absolutely loving the Star Trek kits, and I'd sure love to get another Monogram J Liberator myself.

I probably wouldn't have gotten it, given that I have 2 completed builds hanging and a third -D variant in the stash, but given the price I got it at, and my desire to get box tops from old kits I built as a kid, I couldn't pass it up.

Aggieman,

That is a serious haul!  The B-36 was a whopping $15 when it came out.  I bought one that was sitting in the window of a local pharmacy.  Taking it home on my bike was really hard, as the box was too big to get my arm (and fingers) around it.  Pedalling uphill with only one hand on the handlebar while trying to keep the box from sliding out of my grip was challenging to say the least!  I remember using dead D-cell batteries for nose weight.  Don't listen to the guys hawking those silly white metal landing gear - Monogram's engineering was more than enough to keep the B-36 standing on it's wheels.

The K'tinga's lighting set is kinda lame.  The only good thing about it is the red tinted clear parts, which should have been in the kit in the first place.  The K'tinga itself is absolutely fabulous though.  If you light the kit yourself, you will probably be much happier.

Stephan thats like a walk down memory lane!  A budding Monogram museum.  The Liberator was the first 4 engine bomber I built.  Great scores.  Looking back at some of your build threads you've done quite a bit of Monogram builds.  How many do you have built and in the stash?  AND they all turned out great.

I knew that spreadsheet would prove itself useful some day!  I keep a spreadsheet with every kit I've ever purchased, wanted to purchase, or built.  I also keep stats on any that I have donated or seen destroyed.

I have 144 total entries between Monogram and Monogram Pro-Modeler.  Of those, I have 67 in the stash with 73 built.  The math doesn't seem to be quite right, as I know I've lost more than 4 via a shelving collapse that happened several years ago that destroyed several builds, many of the initial kits I bought when I decided to return to this hobby back in 1995.

If I can get a good picture, the Monogram museum suggestion is probably spot-on, as I have saved all the old baby blue boxes or others of similar vintage from each Monogram build that I complete.  If it's a more recent re-pop I don't keep those boxes, as this is all about the childhood memories.  I have laminated the box tops from those I kept and have them mounted on some of the wall space in my garage (above the garage door, for instance).

I seriously need to put the brakes on my spending this year.  I mean, it's still January!

I've added a bunch to my stash this year on top of the F-84F Thunderbird that I got in the first week of January.  Most have come via eBay, but a coulple came by way of Amazon, believe it or not.

I eye-balled these first two for years before finally deciding to pull the trigger:

Had to add the lighting kit for the U.S.S. Enterprise, and would have gotten the lighting kit for the Klingon but it literally disappeared from all sites that I had seen it on just a day before.  I'll keep looking for that lighting kit but can probably just do the lighting myself, as the Klingon ship doesn't have the spinning lights in the nacelles like the Enterprise does, which was the entire motivation for buying that lighting kit.

I have the old Monogram Tu-16 Badger in the 70s white box, but could not resist even at the steep $40 price for a baby blue boxing from the 60s.

Despite having built the old Monogram P-40B countless times, and having 2 unbuilt examples in my possession (one I keep in one of my display cabinets on the Warhawk shelf, still in the original cellophane wrapping, as it was the first model I built at age 3), I could not resist this even older boxing, early 60s, with a bunch of extras included to do that old kit justice.  Oh, and there are actually two complete P-40s kits in this one box.

Christmas of '76 Santa brought me the Monogram B-24J Liberator.  Having built an original '77 release of the B-29 recently, and with an original '75 release of the B-17G in my stash, I decided I wanted that Liberator in the original boxing as well.  I keep all these old Monogram boxes, get them laminated and have them mounted on the walls in my garage.  This came from eBay, was a great price considering what these often go for, but was missing decals.  I bought decals for The Dragon and His Tail from another eBay vendor.

There is a bit of a story behind this next one, Monogram's original 1980 release of the huge B-36 Peacemaker.  I was 13 and entering that time in my life where my interest in models was waning while my interest in girls and my baseball team was increasing.  I was in a store, K-Mart maybe, when I came across this.  It cost a whopping $20.  My dad said I could get it.  I hemmed and hawed over it, but ended up saving that money to spend on records instead.  And that decision weighed on me even after all these years, so when I saw this eBay offering for a damn good price (~$70, still in the shrink wrap), yep, I jumped on it.

And then the one that I never thought I would acquire.  This is an original boxing of Monogram's Snoopy and His Sopwith Camel.  This kit is my second oldest memory of kits (behind Monogram's P-40).  The kit didn't survive the years, but my mom did tracings of the box art, and did a wood cutout of the Camel with the world's most famous beagle flying it, painted it and had it mounted on a wood plaque that I have had in my possession ever since.  My mom actually found a built kit just a few years before she passed and gifted that to me, and that's where I thought that would end.  A couple of years ago, I grabbed the Atlantis re-boxing and enjoyed every second of building it, but given that unbuilt copies were going for more than $200 on eBay, I did not expect to ever have a desire to spend that kind of money for that kit.  Then I came across this listing.  I got it for less than $50.  Yes, it had actually been built then disassembled, but all the parts are in the box.  I have not tested the motor but I'm not really that worried about it.  I'm just elated to have an original of the kit that I can build, and I have the box as well.

I have another kit still on the way to the house, but as it is coming surface mail from Asia, no idea when I'll get it.  It's Bandai's R2-D2 and C-3P0.

I recently reorganized my garage, which opened up significant wall space.  I believe that is where I will mount the B-36 when I finally decide to build it.  I already have an RB-36 hanging from the ceiling, but I want to build it wheels down and maybe cut open the gun bays and scratch build the guns.

I am also considering getting that huge 1/32 B-17G that would also go on that wall, but I really don't think I'm going to part ways with that most cash.  I may get the scaled down version for 1/3 of what the 32nd scale kit goes for to build along with the Monogram Fortresses that I have in my stash.

I've also set my eyes on a couple of future releases from ICM - a 1/48th Ki-21 Sally, and a totally needed release of a 1/48th Martin B-26 Marauder.  No idea when those will hit the shelves, hopefully not any time soon as my wallet needs a break.

Ben, nice adds. I am doing something very similar in adding detail up parts to kits more than buying more kits, but still buy more kits. Dangit!!

Stik, very nice decals. How do you like those Arii kits? I've never had one.

John, Drums, Brandon, and Grey, you guys have picked up some great kits!

I’ve had a few new acquisitions come in since my last update.

For my 1/48 RAF & Fleet Air Arm, I picked up these both well discounted off of their list price on the evilBay

and then these two items… scrambling for replacement decals on my recent Mig-3, I realized that I needed Red Stars in my decal stash… and the Tempest PE set will dress up the old Eduard kit in my stash

For my 1/35 motor pool, I picked up these kits… last weekend at AMPS, some guys came in with partially built and unbuilt kits from a friend of theirs who had died recently.

I picked up these two very well along and very well started kits..

and this un started early Jagdpanther…

it is missing the rail flat car, but I’m not complaining. All three cost me $20!!!

Wow, those are some nice scores. Too bad for the ones that passed but at least they will get built.

DRUMS - what a haul!  That BT46B is on my wish list.  Just love those monster rear slicks.  F1 build 2023???

BK - nice selection of car models.  You will love the Bronco.  Fantastic kit.  I've got that swordfish kit in the stash as well.  Sprung for the Tamiya detail set - comes with all the strut bracing.

Nice haul GS.

Thanks,

John

Here are my first acquisitions of the new year and one from last year.

Bought the WNW Fokker E. II back in November from Andy’s Hobby Headquarters and it showed up I think on December 30. I am not the biggest fan of aircraft models but I wanted at least one WNW kit to build and I figure unless someone else buys the molds and starts making kits I’m not going to find this Fokker E. II for less than $200USD.

Couple purchases off eBay the Max Immelman figures price was too good to pass up. The Fiat 3000 tracks I needed for the Tauro Fiat 3000 I’ll be starting soon for the Between Wars GB on the forums. The tracks included with the Tauro kit are one link too short on each run. The aftermarket tracks are resin and this will be my first time working with resin tracks and I’m nervous about it.

I bought this Miniart kit last week at the nearest hobby shop to me. It’s a Mercedes- Benz 170V. I’ve been wanting to build a civilian car model lately but I wanted to keep the majority of my collection 1/35 and 1/32 and the Miniart kit fit my requirements perfectly. There is a lot in the box including a very nicely detailed engine along with two figures. I am going to try to squeeze this model in my very busy build schedule for this year somehow.

Over the past few months I've been adding to my stash, mostly the auto side, but a few AC and armor as well.

Finally pulled the trigger on the stock Bronco.

And a 68 Charger and 68 Roadrunner

Had to add the 70 AAR Cuda to go with my T/A Challanger

I thought this would go good in a big dio

And finally, I've been wanting a Swordfish for a long time now and pulled the trigger
