Speaking of Apache Paint, I just Helo Drabbed my Revell A model today. Looks pretty good. I primed it with overall black, underhighlighted panel and rivet lines with desert tan and then sprayed overall Helo Drab. Now for the detail painting and a few other odds and ends and then a couple coats of Future, decals, and the final dullcote layers. I'm almost done with this one!

Next A model will be in grey!

Jason,

Gimme a week. My girlfriend will be up here next Friday and she's bringing her digital camera. It is infinitely better than mine! In the meantime, I'll try to finish as much of "Devil's Dance" as I can!

I hear ya on that one! I actually got some time to work on it tonight, so I painted the sharkmouth, inked "Devil's Dance" on the doghouse (both sides) and did an oil wash over the entire bird. Its looking pretty cool right now. Oh, and I did the ALQ-144 tonight as well. Twix wrappers work wonders! I'm going to dry brush it next to bring out some raised detail, and then I'll start on the sensor turret. Should be a good night!

Wow.... I had a modelling night/morning. Stayed up until 0500 working on the bird. Rotor hub has been detailed, laser detectors finished, TADS optics inserted.... I'm tired! I've gotta detail the cannon now that the wire-strike frame is dry. Have to finish painting the sharkmouth on the left side (it came out a little light), add the tail rotor and proper detail, finish the AGM-114Ks and then add a single one to each missile rack.
Then I've just gotta future it, decal it, dull cote it, and I'm DONE!

I'm excited, its been a LOOOONG time since I finished a model!

I can't wait to check out the Apache, Jon. Approve [^] Sounds like you have a definite winner in the making. Oh, I started some subassemblies on my subject for the upcoming Attack Helicopter Group Build. I'm going to hold off revealing what it is until I get a little further into it (it's a motivation thing- Cool [8D])

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Cheers,

Ok, here's the first photo. Its kinda blurry because I couldn't wait until next week and shot it with my own crappy digital camera. It still needs future, decals and a few other things, but it has come a long way. Lemme know what you think!

Wow, the grey looks really white and blurry in this pic! Oh well, detail will be here next week!

Nice ALQ Jon!

Did you have to use any red tint over the Twix or is there enough red in the wrapper to look right?

Mac,
I've been thinking about doing some clear red and some silver over it in a few spots. I don't think there's enough silver in it, but the gold sure stands out. The color varies enough from each angle that it looks good, I just want it to look better.

Jon,
I have thought about trying some kind of mixture using clear red & blue to get the color I want. I have also wondered about using mixtures of separated metalic paint. Have you tried either of these? I can never quite get the color I am looking for.

Wait wait wait wait wait waitaminute! I just read thru this thread. Army's going gray now?

Banged Head [banghead] I already had my RAH-66 in gray as a "what-if USMC", then last week I decided to go for "what-if US Army in Korea 2009" and repainted it green! Now I've got to go back to gray? Banged Head [banghead]

LOL!!!! Guess I should real ALL the threads, not just the ones that look like they pertain to something I'm working on! Gray makes a lot of sense, especially since the enemy threat is from below, not fighters prowling overhead. Marines and AF realized this years ago and that's why Cobras and A-10s went all gray.

BTW - Thanks for posting that clip Albert!

Looks like there was a shark mouth on at least one of em. Guess I've gotta build that other Revell kit as one of those birds.

Gonna build a group of Apaches for the group build!

Ok, this is driving me NUTS! I know which unit they're from, I've checked their website and its like they don't even exist! The only static shot I can find of them is a distance shot from head-on, which is next to useless. Looking at the film in slo-mo, I've figured out that at least 2 of them have sharkmouths, but it doesn't look like they have the standard "UNITED STATES ARMY" ahead of the tailboom. I NEED PICS OF THESE!!! I have to include this in my book!

Sorry Jon

I just found out I can put the pics up! I have to get my thumb drive down here so I can post them. They do have a shark mouth and Palm tree with a crescent moon on the cowling (SC Guard). I hope to get some pics on the forum in a day or two. Hopefully the flight schedule will co-operate with me.

By the way...as usual, the news isn't telling it all about the guy who asked Rumsfeld about vehicle armor. There was a reporter next to the guy that got him to ask the question for him. Cool coin from Rumsfeld too!

Screaminhelo -

This is a little off topic, but said reporter was from the newspaper here. I heard about this a few days ago. He's imbedded with a TN NG unit filing a series of reports with them. The armor topic came up once or twice even before this Town Hall meeting. He fired off an e-mail back here bragging about how that was his best day as a journalist and then e-mail got leaked out. Some of the press back here has picked up on that, but not much. The editor of the paper was once a White House communications director during the Reagan Administration I believe and according to him, the reporter prompting the question isn't the hot topic, but the matter of the leaked e-mail is "under review." Of the soldier who actually asked the question, his unit saying that technically no rules were violated.

Hey Mac,

I'd heard something about an accident up in Mosul the other day. Nothing confirmed, but it dealt with a Grey Apache, have you heard anything? Just wondering.

Jon,
Heard there was an Apache that tried to use a Blackhawk as a helipad. The 60 crew only suffeded minor injuries and the 64 burned. My most reliable source for info on this one is the rumor mill.

Hey Trigger,
I don't think anything was done wrong, I am just tired of what this has turned into; I have seen too much of it over the years and it is getting old. I have strong opinions on the media in general but this is the wrong forum for that discussion.

Mac,

Yeah, I'd heard it was the other way around, but that's pretty much the deal. I'd heard that the -60 crew had some serious injuries though. Hoping everyone makes it ok. Terrible for the Apache crew.

Stay safe.

Jon,

Did you see the piece in Dec FSM for AFV optics? I thought that a couple of those techniques had real promise for ALQ's, especially using the glitter shapes. It would be tedious but I'm going to try cutting the mirrors out and building up the ALQ in sections. If anyone tries this before I get home let my know how it works out.

The New Guys get here next week!!!!!!

Mac,

I was thinking the same exact thing the other night. I was sitting at our dining out, bored to tears (as usual) and I happened to notice the table decorations, little red, silver and blue metal stars. Immediately, I thought "hmmm.... ALQ-144" My girlfriend looked at me quizzically as I played with the pieces, folding them into even smaller rectangles. It is possible, just gonna take a lot of time, patience and sanity, all of which are in drastically short supply in my life right now. Maybe next week when I get back to NY!

Sorry, I didn't mean to have brought up a sore subject. Never intended to divert the topic of conversation.

Back to the subject - Can you (or anyone else reading this) tell me if the Apaches one or two-tone, and does it look like the same light gray the Marines use on their helicopters? They look like overall Light or Dark Ghost gray in that video clip, but it's always tricky to tell with those two colors. I've got a 1/48 A model that could end up gray.

Stay safe, and thanks

Hey guys!

I am trying to get a host for the pics now. I only have two of them to post ( two were lost due to a bad card ) but one is a pretty good left profile and the other one is from the rear. I think that they will be a good enough reference to do a good paint job if you compare them to similar Marine paint jobs. They do have shark mouths on the nose and the SC National Guard emblem on the aft portion of each engine cowling. All stencils are there, they are just gray. The one That I photographed did not have the blast shielding on the stabilator, the unit was about 50/50 on this.

Only 38 more days?

Hey Mac,

Sounds like you guys are getting replaced by my guys! I'm not going, since I'm not deployable yet, but our guys leave next week. It kinda sucks being stuck in a rear det.

I should be headed over there in about 18 months to 2 years, depending on when I get my flight school slot and when the unit I'm going to deploys. Hopefully our birds will be grey by then too!

Anyhow, you've got AKO mail. I'll gladly host your pics, just gimme a few days to get my tripod site reorganized. LOTS of updates for it, but I'll have plenty of room to host whatever pics you'd like to send.

Take care!
