I came across this diorama on a facebook page recently and would like to know if anyone knows how the explosion was created or if they have any suggestions on doing so.
Thanks

"Whaddya mean 'Who's flying the plane?!' Nobody's flying the plane!"
Someone did one using cotton and created a neat combination of smoke and fire with a Skyhawk kit on a bombing run diorama.
I think this might be the one BlackSheep was refering to? I can't seem to find it on the FSM and you can't see all the photos on Pinterest unless you register for the site.

Hi, If your still curious it was in the English mag AirFix Jan 2015 on page 36 but even the writer of the article was wondering how it was done. I guess at that show the maker wanted to keep it a secret..lol

Google "skyhawk napalm diorama" and look at images. That explosion is illuminated which, imho, makes all the difference.
Yes, that is the diorama I was trying to upload a photo of in my initial post but so far haven't been able to figure it our using photobucket
Try this again...

Yes, that's the one! That is THE best diorama with explosions and smoke I've ever seen.
Np guys, I thought I remembered this diorama from the site a year or so ago. CN Spots is right though, dunno why I didn't think to just click on the 'Images' tab instead of going to the links.
Looking forward to the FSM IT guys to get the search engine going again.
I just had to show this photo, I think it's one of the best simulating fire. Don't know who did it or how but it's absolutely awesome. Terry

Very cool Terry!
G I think this build is perfection. I've looked at it from different views and I'm more impressed each time. It looks like shredded cotton may have been used along with a fusion of paints and I believe at least one LED mounted light underneath. But the blending, the build, the prop everything is perfect. I'd sure like to find out how this one was completed. Working on these techniques is on my modeling Bucket List.
So all of these are superb and take modeling fire to the next level, so how do they do it?
I'm pretty sure they are using cotton and LED's. The prop spin on the Helcat is produce by an air source and a movable prop. I MAY give this a try on my up and comming destroyed Iraqi T-72 build. I'll have to see if what I think they are doing works.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Simply amazing!! I guess we are limited by our imagination only (and talent!). When the time comes, I will need the help of you guys so I can create gun flashes from a Spitfire firing at a ME-109 and with the ME smoking from the engine. Danny

Wow! I've never seen that one before! Simply amazing!
You do it kinda like this.
I still need to add black smoke
I was thinking of doing a YouTube tutorial.
Do it!! I'm very curious on how it's created.
I did it on my detonation dio (drag race car engine grenading) also on my warspite gets a few scars dio, if you check out the build log and look at the crashing fw 190 you will see a step by step photo of how I did it.
Here is a link to one I'm working on, not my best effort but hope to improve it.

Hey KP ;
can you give a link I can get too ? T.B.
Reviving an old thread - here's a great website I found. European guy who has a wonderful English-language blog describing builds and how-tos on his very detailed dioramas, many of which feature explosions and fires. Short answer: cotton, cellophane, and LEDs.
