Six Flags over Texas, GlobeLife Ballpark Hurricane Harbor, and AT&T Stadium (aka jerryworld) are only a couple miles from each other, and the trio is within two miles of my house. So, I have "attractions" that draw in people from all over (out of State plates are hugely common sight).  Which also draws in those who prey upon those sort of folks (and random vagrants, beggars, and similar grifters). Mind, the cesspool which is Dallas is only 20 miles away, too. Which is why I recently added a SIG 365X to my collection.

That is a hoot.Thanks for sharing that! I think I had seen some of them sort on the program I watched. They had a gaggle of guys shooting up the forest. The only problem with this is their shot reached a neghbors house peppering their vehicles. No brains. Maybe they had a lobotomy. :)

Don didnt correct me and actually, I was waiting to hear if he would. I was kind of surprised he didnt. His jovial laugh said it all. He made up the story. He loved to tell a good yarn. 

Which by the way made me question his squirrel story. When I called balderdash on him, his wife Sonia absolutely backed it up. I thought for sure he was pulling my leg but Sonia was a straight shooter.

Also, if he was USAF trained, maybe he's never flown anything slow enough to produce a negative groundspeed with enough headwind, so I suppose it's possible he thought he was making a funny.

F-in-law was 'owner' of two aircraft types in WW2 armed with four 20mm cannons in the belly. When all four fired, it took 20kt off ground airspeed.

Last fire season I watched the big DC-10 work a canyon about ten miles south. They'd go down in there a lot closer to the ground than I'd be ok with, drop their load, and the a/c would pop up 1000 ft right there.

EDIT above, It wasn't the little DC-10 ...

Fluid dynamics are a wonderful thing.

Wildlife? Lot's of deer, bobcats, the occasional cougar.

Turkeys and turkey vultures.

Thanks for thinking of me this AM, Steve. I can see that YouTube being of great interest to any modeler who is also a Star Wars fan. Being lifelong sci-fi fan, I'm baffled why I never had any interest in the Star Wars brand. I think one day I will start streaming and change my opinion, as I recently did with the Battlestar Gallactica franchise.

By the way, one more slow airplane tale.....

Dad apparently owned a Cub Coupe before my arrival on the planet. When asked why he gave up flying, he always told the story about flying back from Detroit one day, and noticed the semi's below him on I94 were passing him was what made him give up flying.

I don't think that was the real reason, but I have little doubt the story itself was true. Smile

Here is a dumb question. If the wind is so strong to the point a plane becomes motionless in terms of forward progress--doesn't the wind over the wings provide the lift needed to keep the plane in the air? At what point does it become stall speed? When the plane is forced backwards?

Updated. Not trying to be a smart aleck. Just curious about this whole subject.

     The point is well understood. But Remember, A plane flies ONLY when the wind is passing OVER the wings at the proper speed. Go too slow and you start losing lift. Remember, airplanes don't have like birds-Hollow Bones! As far as sideways watch some of the big planes landing at your local Airport- Many times they are cockeyed to the runway because of the SideDrafts!.

     Also remember what makes the Piper Cub a great trainer? With the wing loading area it will try to fly at ridiclously low speeds. Like 20 miles an hour in a headwind! Many times planes actually fly cattywhampus to the direction they are going. They are still on course, but the aircraft is slightly crooked in it's forward motion.

     The point is well understood. But Remember, A plane flies ONLY when the wind is passing OVER the wings at the proper speed. Go too slow and you start losing lift. Remember, airplanes don't have like birds-Hollow Bones! As far as sideways watch some of the big planes landing at your local Airport- Many times they are cockeyed to the runway because of the SideDrafts!.

It is hot and humid here this wonderful 4th, and so the heat drove me inside. I did get a little morning time outside though. After I post this I will head to the dungeon where it's cool and see what more damage I can do.  

Not a lot has been accomplished since my last post. I did fit and glue the forward wall to the others. I held off on that piece because I wanted to sort out if I can install the floor later, after it's attached. I tested it, and I can.

I am stil waffling on the removeable roof. Putting the work into doing so is the velocity killer. I will attempt it though and see how it goes.

She:

Is not happy about fireworks at all (no with those ears).  Six Flags shot off a batch Firday night, and last night.  They had a batch at Jerryworld last night, too.

She's not going to much enjoy tonight, there wil lbe either 4 or 5 shows within human earshot.  Sigh.  She's not keen on thunder, either, and we still have t-storms in the forecast, too.

I have a .46 RC cub and one of my favorite things was when we had a crosswind on the runway and you have to crab it in.  Fun little plane once you master the adverse yaw.

On a side note (no pun intended) I was on a little Embraer (or Fokker) turbo  prop from San Diego to LAX.  Landing in heavy wind and rain at LAX on approach I was looking down the runway from my port window seat Indifferent - serious crabbing there

Looks like I am going with a removeable roof.

 

Below:

The white insert will get glued to the bottom of the roof. This then will make it press fit deal.

Below: Like thus. I used passenger car styrene on hand. It sort of looks like wood and it's fairly close to scale.

Things to do.

1. Cut out the openings.

2. Do something about the areas at its edges underneath.

3. I plan to have an LED light in the center of the roof. I need to come up with a glass sort of globe/lantern, or something. I will try using copper tape for electrical and to eliminate a tethered roof.

4. I will probably add some bracing to dress the piece and maybe add some rivits too.

Below:

The sides are curved inward. I will need to make a brace and spread the sides apart. Something other than the wood stick in the photo.

And that is that for this July 4th.

 That's why the instructor told my daughter when she was learning to fly the A-10 Thunderbolt( WartHog) don't hold the Trigger down more than a second or two. Or you'll lose important Airspeed! That big A@@#$ gun could stop the plane in Mid-Air if you held the trigger too long, was the scuttlebutt!

Unless I am misunderstanding, we are both talking about the same thing. I plan to have tape on the roof and on the interior carriage, and both would be aligned so they touch. This then makes the needed connections. I will try soldering fine wires to the tape so I don't have to try routing tape all around. I just need the tape for contact points.

I have not tried this before but I dont see why it shouldn't work. I think the trick will be making sure there is a tight enough fit ensuring electrical conductivity.

Maybe look at dollhouse lighting kits - the double copper tape might fit the bill.

Oh wow, that is interesting. I already have some adhesive backed copper tape. I didn't think the underside was conductive, I just assumed it wasn't. I will check that. Thanks for the tip!
