The point is well understood. But Remember, A plane flies ONLY when the wind is passing OVER the wings at the proper speed. Go too slow and you start losing lift. Remember, airplanes don't have like birds-Hollow Bones! As far as sideways watch some of the big planes landing at your local Airport- Many times they are cockeyed to the runway because of the SideDrafts!.
Also remember what makes the Piper Cub a great trainer? With the wing loading area it will try to fly at ridiclously low speeds. Like 20 miles an hour in a headwind! Many times planes actually fly cattywhampus to the direction they are going. They are still on course, but the aircraft is slightly crooked in it's forward motion.
