B-29 build finished
Posted by reklein on Saturday, January 27, 2007 8:48 PM

Heres a, at the time confederate airforce B-29. Home made decals using Micro-Mark clear paper. A freind of mine got to fly the real one for an hour. He's a retired corporate pilot who now has the model. Disregard the dates I forgot to sset my camera.

Great job!  That's the first time I've seen someone put "FiFi" together.

Nice job. Your NMF looks good. What did you use for it?

Nice job.

That's a big plane to do NMF.

It looks great.

What is the Confederate Air Force?

Thanks again

If NMF means metal paintjob. I used Model Master Steel. Airbrushed on. About four coats with two or thee coats of Testors clear lacquer on top with another coat of clear to seal the decals. I need to learn how to work canopies a little better. Those greenhouses require a lot of masking. I may have gotten away with something, I read after I sprayed on the lacquer that it wasn't supposed to be applied on high luster metal finishes, although "steel" wasn't mentioned. Thanks for the compliments by the way.

Beautiful build and I like the finish of the MM steel and clear coat.  I'll have to give it a try sometime.  Is that the Academy 1/72 kit that you used?

Nice job on a very rare bird! I like that you built it as "FiFi". I have never seen her built before.

IMO you did a very nice job on the paint, FiFi is actually painted silver/grey, so your model captured her finish nicely.

The kit is Revells 1:48 kit. Thats my table saw its sittin on.Its large for a plastic model almost 3' span and over 2'long. I had a lot of photos of the real plane to work from, taken by my freind who got to fly it. The FIFI nose art I traced from one of the photos, colored it by hand and used my copier to adjust the size. The tail art I masked off and painted by hand with a brush.

What is the Confederate Air Force?

Now known as the Commemorative Air Force for politically correct reasons with which I disagree, but oh well.

Impressive!

I'd love to make one of those myself, but I have no idea where I'd put it!

http://www.commemorativeairforce.org/ - everything you might want to know about the CAF. They put on an air show every year in Midland, Texas, USA, that has to be seen to be believed. Any WW II or old airplane junkie just might be able to get their fill by attending one of these.

And I agree, the change from Confederate to Commemorative Air Force was done for purely political, stupid reasons, but ... they have to make money to keep these grand old warbirds flying, and the only way to do that is to attract people to their air shows around the country and to the (excellent!) museum in Midland - which is not a destination resort unless you're a warbird nut. You have to want to go there.

I have seen Fifi at several airshows. You have done a great job on the model. The last time I show Fifi, it was used in a simulated A-bomb drop. I suppose that too would now be politically incorrect.

I just learned that the real Fifi is currently grounded. CAF is trying to raise $3 million to replace the engines. One of them had ground metal in it when checked. An industrialist has donated $2 million but one more is needed. The plane hasn't flown since last fall.

I think it was about the late 70's when they started getting all the "flak" about being called the Confederate Air Force and the members sporting the Confederate Flag, along with the American Flag on their Fight Suits.  If they participated in an Air Show on a Government Base they had to cover up the Confederate Flag.  Eventually they bowed to the gods of politcal correctnesss and changed the name.  I was lucky to get one of their large back patches before the change.  I made the last Airsho in Harlingen, Tx. in 1990 before the move to Midland.  Haven't made it to Midland yet, but this would be a good year, their 50th Anniversary.  Oh, technically maybe not since the name change!  I made the 25th Aniversary Airsho and they sold a really nice belt buckle.  They went to a "strip bombing" show to get away from the "atomic" fall out too!

Clear Left!

Very nice job on the "FIFI" model.  The real one has been undergoing a major renovation and is need of four new R-3350s before she flies again.  About $3 million worth if you can spare that much out of your allowance.  Actually, I think it is down to about $1 million now because a Texas businessman with a fairly decent sized allowance pledged $2 million for the new engines.
