Wow, I just noticed this feeler thread the other day, and now its almost up to 10 pages! I think I have another spot on the shelf for a 109...

I guess I'm in with this:

I won't be doing the box scheme, but rather the Croatian Black 4, all weathered up as seen in this pic:

I have a set of Montex Masks as painted on markings will be easier to chip and weather. I also have some resin exhaust, prop, and wheels, and the a must for the Hasegawa 109s: an Aires cockpit.

Yeah, I'm with ya on that.  I'm blown away by how much AM is available for these birds!  Just  when I figured the Barracuda resin, the Aries 'pit, Barracuda decals and Master brass barrels would be enough,  took another look at those Brassen struts and this time I went for 'em - they look amazing!

There is alot of stuff available for them. 1/24 scale has an array of AM stuff available also.

Modelling maths, I like it. Ye, there's defiantly lots of AM around for these. I do like the Eduard Brassein sets, though they are a bit pricey, I think its just a case of deciding if the extra price is worth the extra detail. Those undercarriage legs do look nice.

Bish, the kit legs looked quite nice, but are molded as two halves (front & back).  Figured cleaning up the seams could sacrifice some detail I wasn't willing to lose, especially in 1/32.  Also, the added strength appealed to me as well,  so I went for 'em.

Here's a few of the schemes from the BarracudaCal sheet (they give you 7 in total).  Black 13 got my attention immediately.  Love the idea of the 81/82 with natural metal under the wings.  I'll be using MM enamels (81 & and the mislabeled 83) and Alclad II airframe aluminum,  but am still a bit baffled as to what color to apply to the lower (unpainted?) control surfaces......

That is an unusual scheme for the 109G line up.

I don't blame you Mike. I have the G-factor metal legs myself and they look nice. That is an unusual scheme for a 109, not seen that before. I am pretty sure the control surfaces were metal as well, no fabric here as far as I know.

Mike- Whatever isn't natural metal on the undersides is the standard RLM 76.

Bish, Nathan - thanks guys!  Seems I need to determine what the control surfaces consisited of.  My initial impression was that they're fabric covered,  in which case it would be 76 applied to them.  That would contrast nicely with the natural metal underneath.  Now, with a NMF undersurface, my gut is telling me that the struts, gear doors, or wheel wells might also be left unpainted.  What do you fellas think?

Looked back over the thread - man, those are some really interesting projects you fellas have lined up.  The majority of those kits I've never seen built, and a few I've never even heard of, so this is going to be a real treat watching 'em all come together. Can't wait for this thing to start! 

I don't know about the 109's but on the 190's with the NMF, the outside of the gear doors  were painted the usual bottom color which in thier case was 76 (or at least the aircraft I researched anyways) and the struts and gear bays were the usual 02. For sure Nathan , Bish or Rigidrider would know.

Shows how much my gut knows, Joe!  Those colors sure would go nicely with the NMF.  I've seen your Fw's - great stuff!  I'll tell ya, so much new info on these birds has turned up since I last built one - hope you fellas don't mind all the questions.

To be honest I have not come across many NMF German aircraft. It doesn't seem to be that common and as I understand it was something that appeared very late in the war, I assume to save time as well as paint. But certainly something I will be looking into.

Fabric surfaces on 109s consisted of the rudder, elevators, and ailerons. Flaps were always metal. These surfaces were rlm 76 on the underside, and topside camo. Now late in the war, wing tips were wood, as well as some vertical tails. These surfaces were all built by subcontractors, thats why you see late war 109s with the undersides of the wings left in natural metal, but the control surface bottoms were still 76, as well as the undersides of the wing tips.

So there were fabric covered areas on 109's, thanks Nathan, I hadn't realised that.

Nathan, thanks a bunch for that info!    Looking at the artwork for Black 13 and applying what you told me, the artwork makes perfect sense now.  The lower wing tips had me puzzled a bit as well, as they definitely looked different than the NMF, but why, I thought? Now I know. Thanks again!

Hey all... Something interesting... The local Hobbytown is having the semi annual model show the 11th of Oct, and this time they are going to do something a bit different. They are also having a second show (kind of a show in a show) for a certain type build. This time it consists of 32nd scale RMX aircraft of WWII vintage. After the main show all those who enter the special build will be judged by their peers. No one can vote for themselves, and the winner will get some gift card or something of that nature, might be kind of cool being they usually have about 100 to 200 entrants.

You have 6 weeks to build and all they ask is that you produce a receipt showing it was purchased within the 6 week time frame. WELL... one of the approved aircraft was the Bf109 G10 "Earla" and I'm going to give it a go, I will if you dont mind post WIP here (Not to be considered part of this GB of course)and see how I do. Thanks guys... Can you tell I'm getting abit antsy to start building 109s again!!!!!LOLOL

I've caught the fever here. I'm already thinking of a second build for this. I'll just leave it at that, but next year there could be at least a few 109s coming together!

 When it comes to 109's there is a wealth of knowledge between all of us here. We've got reference material beyond belief on this bird. Feel MORE than free to ask any question ANY time good buddy. Believe me , I'll have my fair share.

Joe,  I really appreciate that!  Thanks man!   My 109 reference library is quite small I'm sure compared to the library you guys have, consisting of only two books, the AeroDetail #5 and the Prien & Rodeike hardcover.  The knowledge of these birds you guys have shown here so far is mindblowing.  I know I'm in the right place!
