Any interest in an Airliner GB?

I don't know.  I personally think airliners are just as interesting as anything.  I like all the different liveries, the differences in the models...like the 747-200 vs the 747-400, and the "big" feel of the airliners.  I like the history of the airlines, too.  I'm in the industry, too, so that probably makes a difference.

I miss the '80s when there would be 20 different kinds of planes at the airport...DC-9s, DC-10s, MD-11s, L-1011s, 747s, 757s, 767s, 737s and 727s.  There were alot more airlines to look at, too.  Now its all A320s, 737s and regional jets.

It is funny- in the civil aircraft forum currently we have a thread on "why civil aircraft aren't interesting," and it points out how much of a nitch civil aircraft modeling (including airliners) is.  One complaint is that doing a glossy paint job is too hard, but the most common answer is that civil aircraft just aren't cool, or interesting, or whatever. But the real reason WHY is still illusive.

I picked up a 1/200 Hasegawa American Airlines MD 82/87 I'd like to build instead of the 727. I'll keep the 727 for my Boeing Build in June.

There are 10 GB's I'm interested in (not including mine in June), at least 2 GB's in Nov, at least 3 in Jan and the others are up in the air, and that's in just the last few weeks. That doesn't include the 4 I'm already in and finishing.

So, what I'm trying to say is, Right now is fine, I ordered the Braniff decals today.

Like Modelcrazy, I'm involved in 4 GB's right now with several others coming up after the new year. We can start this one any time. But, I will not personally start for a couple months.

By the way, I'm building a 1/144 Minicraft 777-200. I purchased the United Airlines version of the model, but UA uses PW engines, so I just purchased Continental decals and will purchase Resin GE90 engines for this build. I work for a supplier of GE aircraft engines. This was my main reason for getting involved with this GB!

What are your thoughts on a time to start?  I'm ok starting now if everybody wants to get going, but I have a show coming up here on Nov. 1st and I'm trying to get some builds finished for it so my GB builds are on the back burner until then.  But after that I'm good to go.  

Should I just start it on November 1st?  And have it go until Nov of 2015 or Dec 31st, 2015...something like that?

Alright, alright, I'm in for sure!  I just have to order something -- I have found quite a few things in my price range.  I will PROBABLY be doing an L-188 Electra.  That badge is awesome!

I'm thinking of doing the 787 in United livery.  Still up in the air on the final yet.

Like the badge a lot.

Ok, it seems like there are enough people on board.  It looks like so far we've got:

So that is six "for sures" and we'll say that Subaroomike is a maybe.  Plus, I imagine as we move forward a few others may join in.

I should mention that I will be building a Hasegawa 1/200 DC-10-30 in Continental Airlines 1980's Black Meatball colors as my first build.  I may end up doing 2 or 3 before its all done.

Also, I wouldn't mind some ideas for an Airliners GB badge.  I came up with this one (that needs to be resized, of course):

I'll start a new thread in the Group Build forum after I figure out exactly when the start and finish dates will be and after I decide on a badge.  I'll set a start date that is soon and it will last the standard year I suppose.

While I can enjoy looking at airliner models, and appreciate the modeler's skill, I'm not too interested in building one myself.  Though, I do have 2 kits in my stash, which I want to do as what-if civilian subjects.  One is the venerable Monogram Ford Tri-Motor, which I've thought about finishing in the livery of a fictitious Pennsylvania airline circa 1930.  The other is a Testor's kit of a German pre-war bomber, not the Ju 86, but I think it is a Junkers, and I've thought about converting the military version to a Lufthansa bird.  Oh, and I have the Williams Bros Boeing Model 247 in my stash, too.  But my modeling queue is full right now.

There's a guy on ebay who sells bagged kits (no boxes) and some include decals while others do not.  You can get a Revell 1/144 737-800 for about $16.

Just doing an ebay search using 1/144 Boeing, 1/144 Airbus and 1/200 Hasegawa turned up several kits for $8 - $20.

So far it seems like there are about 4 or 5 builders interested.  If we can get a couple more I'll definitely host it.

Hey Mike, I purchased a new 1/144 scale Minicraft 777-200 for $19.77 shipped. You can get a good deal if you look for it. Plus, it's not required to start day one of the GB. Hope to have you come along for the ride!

I do have a C-54 with USAAF, and KC-97 with USAF markings. I guess I could buy some civi decals instead.  But I think for the GB I would like to do something with jet engines; I never built anything that does not utilize internal combustion.  It would be a nice deviation!

EDIT:    I just saw a few Electras on ebay that were decently priced.  That would be a nice subject

I agree, make a second post. Bish did this for his Star Wars GB feeler. Posted in two forums.

We are up to four, if we get a couple more, I'd say lets go for it.

What do you mean by "cross overs would be okay"?

What that really means is that if you have a model that is being built for another GB or if you have a model that is already half built it would be ok to include it into this GB.

Sometimes people will build a model that fits into multiple GBs that are occurring at the same time.  There is a proposal for an OOB/Scratch Built GB out there now.  I'm sure that most airliner builds would be OOB so I don't want those people to have to chose between this GB and the OOB/Scratch Built GB...if that OOB/Scratch Built GB ends up happening.

Sure, I'd be in with a 1/200 727 if the BG "takes off",
