I'm really enjoying watching this go together!

 

As much as you enjoy watching this kit go together, I am esctatic building this Mosquito aircraft.  There are so many challenges and parts to assemble.  It's so rewarding watching this kit go together.  

Tamiya did a phenom of a job engineering this kit.  Of course this is their flagship model and as such, it does live up to it's persona.  Thank you iampiper13 for the visit and read and reply.  I greatly appreciate it!

But guess what?  I've got my eye on the HK 1/32 B-17G.  Now that's a monstrosity!  I've read nothing but accolades in it's review.  I'll just need to see what Mrs. Toshi is going to say about purchasing such a very pricy kit at approximately $300.00.

Assembly #15 & #16

i have the choice to leave the front nose open to display the Browning 7.7mm Machine Guns.  Am I going to close it up?  Hell no!  LOL!  

I'm going to open it up so I temporarily taped it up as the direction shows at the bottom of the page.

You're doing a bang-up job on this beast.

Speaking from experience, I like where you're going with leaving the gun access open. I built Airfix's 24th scale monster Mosquito, which came with a massive amount of parts and superb detailing.  It includes 2 full Merlins, a fully-decked out gun bay and the bomb bay looks like it is ready for action.  It is no Tamiya, however.  I know at least that Tamiya's 32nd scale Spitfire includes tiny magnets on the engine panels that will allow me to keep those parts separate and close it up whenever I choose.  Airfix did not include any such magnetized parts, so I was left with 2 equally bad options - leave the engine panels off and risk the very real chance of losing those parts, or gluing them on and losing visibility to those glorious engines.  I ended up gluing the panels, but every time I allow myself to take a look at that beast hanging from one of my walls, I think there are some really fine engine kits inside those nacelles.

I've built Tamiya's 1/32 Corasair, Mustang, Spitfire, and Zero.  They all had moveable elevators with metal pins allowing it to move, in which the modeler wanted to pose it in. 

With the Mosquito build, that option is devoid.  Although they are poseable, they do not move.  You must choose one or the other.

That is looking fantastic! The fuselage details are nicely done. Sounds like you are really enjoying this build. As usual, you are doing a great job. Glad you are feeling better!

 

Now that the fueselauge is done I can see that the next step are the Rolls Royce V-12 Supercharged Merlin Engines.  This should be fun.  Thank you for your visit to my Mosquito thread.  I greatly appreciate it!

Unlike your Spitfire of which has moveable elevators, this Mosquito kit only allows you to pose them up or down of which I'm happy with.  If you look back at my last build, the Trumpeter 1/32 P-38 Lightning, I ended up cutting out the cowling with a razor saw to show the twin engines off.  I'm glad I did that as everyone on the forum approved of that change.

I wanted to add, since you built the Tamiya Spitfire, the Rolls Royce Supercharged V-12 Merlin Engine is the same Tamiya engineered designed as the Spitfire, Mustang, and the Mosquito albeit with a different type of supercharger.

Here is the start of assembling two Merlin Engines.  They will require magnets so that the cowlings which will also have magnets can be taken on and off.

Yes Bish.  All of the Tamiya 1/32 aircraft with a Merlin engine has this feature.  Mustang, Spitfire, and Mosquito.  It really is a neat feature.

An interestign idea. I have the Airfix 1/24th Stuka and it has a nice looking engine but i am doing a yellow nosed aircraft so i would like the option of displaying it with cowlings on and of.  am keen to see how this goes together and might try doing a DIY version.

Here is the crankshaft assembly.  In the next step the magnets attach to the rocker covers.

For us Americans, I did the measurements on this and probably for the rest of the engine block in metric.  This is what Tamiya uses and in noticed the blocks measure much more accurately in metric.  

The photo above shows the crankshaft at 4cm.  So I'll keep it in metric for now.

Tamiya uses Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) or rare earth magnets.  Tamiya provides them in two sizes.  Small and large.  In the next photo I'll give you a scale with the ruler.

Here is the magnet.  Don't use tweezers as the magnet will stick to the tweezers.  I use a jewelry wax tipped stick.  You can find these at Hobby Lobby.
