Sorry it's finished, things just got weird here lol

How's the Fortress coming along, Iampiper13? Been awhile since your last update, and us Fortress fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment!! 

My apologies for disappearing, life once again got in the way. I finally had some time this past weekend to work on it and made the mistake of painting some of the interior by the directions, almost everything was called out to be zinc chromate. So yesterday I started repairing the damage to my eyes because of all the yellow. This is what I have so far:

All clear parts are done EXCEPT the ball turrent, I've finally started on it and boy does it have some small panels.

Yes I've learned a lot since being on here, I've tried freehand before an it just didn't work for me. To each their own lol

I should have known things would be going slow trying to do this when my daughter is home most of the time lol

Funny, I'll bet you're steadier than this old guy, lol! The kit really does have very pronounced paint lines, better than most. I'll mask if I must but it seems I'm doing things twice. Also until I found the right masking tape I was not happy with masking. Sometimes I do resort to striping tape and it can be painted before application. Whatever works I say. More than one way to skin a cat my grandfather used to say. Things are looking good so far, keep up the good work!

The one I built was quite a few years ago and the seams leave something to be desired. Also my decals are slightly silvery but I've improved on several things since then mostly attributted to the Forum and the Gang. I'd built models for most of my life with no external input. I'm 74 and still learning!

Take my word for it I am NOT steady enough to freehand paint the clear parts lol and I do appreciate the input. Everything is masked up except the ball turrent which hopefully I'll be able to start on soon.

Wow, the turret looks awesome.  You did a superb job on this build as a whole!

Reiterating on supplies, my first AB was a Testors camoflauge kit.  It had a plastic funky looking AB, canned air, and pre-mixed paint ready to go.  I used it on my Revell 1/48 P-40 Flying Tigers kit.  My camoflauge came out decent.  And I still have that AB in the box it came in.

After going through two cans of compressed air Mrs. Toshi got me a NEO for Iwata.  And that was it!  Then on our 25th wedding anniversary she bought me a Iwata Eclipse all this from HL at 40% off!  So just take your time and eventually you'll start to collect quite a few amount of tools and supplies.  

BTW, I used the NEO by Iwata for two years before I got my Eclipse and I still use the NEO.  LOL!

Hey thanks, I was happy with my hand painted turrets and wanted to show you the results. Anyway, watching the fun project, I did enjoy building the kit!

I did not mask any windows or turrets on my B-17 build. The lines are well defined and came out well with the fine brush method. Not always possible but this model is a good one for this method. I used acryic paint and a toothpick to push along the lines to remove mistakes. If you're steady enough to mask this one you probably are steady enough to fine brush it. Just my humble opinion of course!  

I'm always reluctent to put my pictures on someone's build post but I can post an example with your permission. I guess what I'm saying is that I paint better than I mask! lol. Your masking does look better than mine I must say!

Sorry life got in the way lol, haven't done any work on it since my last post. Should be starting back up real soon.

I have a very steady hand, but I am not able to freehand the framing on cockpits and turrets. I like the idea of using acrylic paint instead of enamel. I'll give that a try.

I totally understand. It took me years to build up the supplies I have now and I am pretty good about sticking to my $20 a month budget for supplies. Sometimes I spend it on a new kit or two, or sometimes a $10 kit and a couple bottles of paint, or can of clear, etc. It builds up after a while. If I'm doing really well for the month I'll spend another $20.

So it doesn't have to happen instantly. I didn't see that as a requirement and I don't recall signing anything lol. 

Just enjoy it. It will progress as fast or slow as you want it to. It took me a long time and I wasn't worried. There are no requirements. Just have fun on the journey.

I'll look into it as I go with this hobby lol right now money wise I need to stick with what I have :)

Oh. Yes that is okay! I try to keep my acrylic layers over my enamels, but either way is okay. I regularly use Testors enamel clear coats over my acrylics though, and finish with a Vallejo flat coat because I prefer the sheen. So yes you can use just about any combination of acrylic and enamel layers.

There is something about layering acrylics and lacquers though. One can go over the other, but not the other way around and I don't know which is which. I rarely ever use a lacquers because they usually give me more problems.

Don't worry about collecting all of this stuff at one time or in huge batches. Just a piece here and there when you can afford to. There is no rush. You continue to do what you can with what you have and enjoy every minute of it. :)

 

Lol I meant for instance I have a can of enamel OD for the top so I shouldn't use a can of acrylic grey for the bottom?

I've been switching to Vallejo Model Air sets from Amazon. Decent prices when you buy them in "bulk". Love them in my little Neo. Don't have to thin them at all. Just a little Flow Improver. Amazon also has Vallejo "Regular" like M. Brindos uses in sets. I never really figured out enamels and switched to acrylics long ago. It always seemed the paint I needed at HL was never there. On a side note, a tip from M.Brindos, find the Clearance Section at HL...A Promodelers Me 410 might still be there. keep up the good work on the 'Fort.

I can imagine, to me it looks like the hardest part might be the ball turrent, making sure the clear parts are right.

No, HL doesn't have an extensive selection of military colors in spray cans. That is a disappointment. That's a lot of the reason why I started switching to the Vallejo paints. I was already enjoying the use of Daler Rowney artist's acrylics and Tamiya acrylics as well, so it was an easy switch. I also started with a knock off no name chinese siphon type AB on canned air. Getting a Neo with a compact compressor as an early present made my world open up like crazy.

So take advantage of a sale at HL and grab an Iwata as soon as you can. They come around once in a while and that's when the best time to take advantage of the prices.

 

I'll keep my eyes open, one of the problems I have is that all the paints I have are enamel and I didn't think they(acrylics) were supposed to be mixed with enamels?
