Oh, sorry Bish Embarrassed. I've got nose radomes on the brain...Smile. I haven't tried that particular mod yet. But my old Pappy always told me.. buy the best you can afford Big Smile

Cheers,

Russ

Good advice. Though i always like to check as paying more doesn't always get you better. But the extra parts in the wingman set certaintly makes it look worth while.

And now we come to two other issues with the Italeri kit - the cargo deck and the ramp door. The cargo deck was shaped wrong and it didn't have raised edges all the way down both sides as in the real aircraft. So I tossed it and made my own, as shown in the second photo.

The pattern on the deck and the ramp door is  pieced together from various pictures and then printed out on photo paper and glued to the parts. I sprayed the surface with dull cote to reduce the shine.

The front of the ramp was not right either (why Italeri couldn't get it right the first time, I just can't understand). I filled and reshaped it, then added some of the PE parts. I added the ramp pattern and some detail along the sides, although because of the flattened shape, it wasn't possible to get it exactly right.

Finally, I scribed over the raised panel lines on the outside of the door and added a "bumper" (what I call it). The bumper is a raised piece attached to the bottom-most part of a C-130 ramp door where it contacts the ground. This is to protect the door from damage. I don't know what it's made of - maybe hard rubber, or possible solid aluminum. I formed mine using auto body filler. It's a very shallow object and difficult to see on the airplane. The kit just shows it as a rectangle.

Wow, this is some exemplary work!  All the details you're putting in and the amount of scratch-building to acheive it, is truly impressive.  Bravo.   Yes

Cheers, Mark

Hello Russ!

Those cargo bay floor and ram just look pretty! Very pretty to be exact. Is it to much to ask - would you share the patterns you printed? I've got a printer too and making a cargo bay floor like that some day would really be something for me. Good luck with your build and have a nice day

The last issue I addressed with the kit was the size of the engines. They are shorter than the T56, which was the standard engine for the E model. I considered buying the correct engines in an AM kit, but it happens that I have two of the Italeri C-130 kits so I was able to cut off the back end of the spare engines and glue them onto the original engines to bring them up to the required length. Then I corrected the panel lines.

Also, the air intakes on the kit engines are the wrong shape. I modified them with some putty and glue. The modified engine is on the right in the picture below.

But there was still a problem - the propellers did not line up when the engines were mounted to the wings. To correct this, I cut the inboard engine mounts back about 3mm.

Hi, Pawel!

Thanks for the the good words!

No problem, my friend. PM me and I'll send you the image. One thing, it's sized for my scratch built cargo deck so you may have to resize it. Same for the ramp floor.

Cheers,

Russ

Once I had everything attached and cleaned up, I sprayed the model overall with a dark gray primer. Then I outlined all the panel lines with India ink and sealed them with a clear coat. Now it's on to painting the camouflage pattern.

This brings the build up to the present.

Many thanks for the compliments, Bish!

I agree, my friend, although I can sympathize with the model makers - it takes time and access to get complete and accurate data. In some cases, it's just not available or cost effective, and they end up making a best guess, like we have to sometimes Smile.

Thanks for the good words, Chad!

Actually, there is very little PE in the build. Most of it is sized and shaped for kit parts, which in many cases are wrong in size or shape (like the flight deck seats and the console).

The PE for the forward access door steps were very good so I used those, and also most of the pieces for the ramp door.

The pieces intended for the interior, like the troop seats, troop doors and some shelving just weren't suitable so I ended up scratchbuilding all of the internal detail, including the forward entry area and cockpit detail except for the control yokes, the engineer's seat and the two bunks. I also modified the navigator's seat and used it. [Slight correction: I did modify and use the pilot and copilot seats from the kit in the cockpit. I also modified and used three of the seats in my spare C-130 kit for the Talon consoles.

There are still some PE pieces I might use on the props and on the main wheels.

Cheers, and thanks for looking!

I normally don't pay much attention to 1/72 builds since I have a difficult time with even 1/48 size kits but this thread caught my attention and I must say I'm flabbergasted at the marvelous detailing, both aftermarket and scratch, that you're doing. Looks like I'll be checking in for the ride as well.

O ye, its deffinetly not easy. I did read somthing the other day which said the engines on the Italeri kits are based on the 130A, which explains why they are short. Not sure they ever did that version, but it could have been what they used to measure and i wounder if it might explain otehr problem with it.

But it certainly looks with a bit of effort (or AM parts)it can be corrected, and your doing a great job of it.

Damn impressive Russ!! =D Very cool stuff here, and at 1:72. I love seeing a modeler take a kit by the balls and mold it into what they want to see. =]

Quick question about the ceiling and ribbing around the fuselage...what did you use to fashion this part?

Thanks for the good words, Bvallot!

That turned out to be a failed attempt to replicate the insulation between the aircraft ribs. I added the ribs made of styrene strips but I just couldn't come up with a material for the insulation between the ribs that was easy to shape but still held its shape, so I settled for spray-painted food wrap glued over the ribs.

It's kind of a reverse image effect but it doesn't look too bad if you don't look too close Smile

Hi, All,

I've decided to put the Clamp in suspended animation for awhile until I learn how to use my air brush more effectively. I'm making too many mistakes and I don't want to ruin it after all the work I put into it.

Cheers,

Russ

Unfortunately, while learning to use my spray setup, my air compressor blew a gasket - literally. I haven't been able to get it repaired yet and I need to get this beast finished, so I'm back to using rattle cans.

So I finally finished the underside camouflage scheme, which was a bear!. Looks more like an Orca :)

Still needs to be dulled down and weathered.

Thanks for looking!
