1/14/18 Revell 1/48 B-17G Flying Fortress Completed

Wow Toshi, the paint looks great!  I have this kit in my stash, but I don't have anywhere to put it once built, lol.  Watching your WIP is making me want to drag it out and build it anyway. 

Toshi looks beautiful how any b17’s did you build? I almost bought one at hobby Lobby today but I have no where for it it’s raining down here that means it’s going to warm up again lol

I got the Fortress on its landing gears.  Here it is in its full colors top and bottom.

Thanks for the compliments!  I actually hand painted the Turret Ball.  I did not mask it.  It took several coats and a really really small brush to do it.  lol!  I’m hand painting the rest of the clear parts of which includes the Top Turret, Radio Gunner, Side Fueselage Gunner x2, and Rear Gunner.  

 

In my humble opinion it takes a shorter time to hand paint then to mask a canopy.  One must just have a study hand.  Something I don’t have at this moment due to my TBI.  But I try to practice in this way to improve my fine motor skills.  I get my inspiration from FSM Forum Members like you!  Thank you mustang1989 for always supporting my builds in 2017 as well as 2018.

That's one quality of the classic Monogram kits-canopies are usually very crisply detailed, so that hand-painting is often easier than masking and spraying.

Here red is the next installment on the further progression of the B-17G.  I was able to complete painting the wings today.  I still have some areas that I need to cleanup before I can move forward but until then, please enjoy what’s been posted thus far

Dug into the "in the BUFF" GB.  Can't find the FSM review, but it is a repop of the old AMT "G" kit, but with SALT wing roots, by Italari.  Should be able to find it on their website. Be forwarned, around a 30"+ wingspan.

 

Just did a quick google for it, Scalehobbiest has it for around $58

Toshi, Your model is getting better and BIGGER all the time.  I'm glad you took on the handpainting challenge.  It reminds us that you can still get quality results without a huge investment in tools.  Keep up the great work.

That is great info goldhammer.  I'm currently working on a 1/144 B52.  I keep imagining the same model in that large scale.  That would be very, very, cool.  I'll look for the FSM review.  Thank you.

In answer to one of you questions back a page, this past year a release of a B-52-G came out, I think in 1/72,  with a review in the FSM video reviews.  Might still be up.  A 1/72 BUFF will dwarf anything else on the wall, you might have to get a bigger place to live

 

as for a 1/72 B-52G, I think I’ll wait for the time when we move into a house.  lol!  Thank you for the support in my builds during the 2017 year and I hope to continue our repoir in 2018.  Also thank you for taking the time out in idetitfying the 1/72 B-52G kit.

That’s some very good coverage 

 

But I tell myself to calm down and see how the second coat adheres as well as give good coverage.  Of course with trying to prevent brush strokes from appearing.  By using a new brush, mixing the paints properly, and making adjustments, I’m able to get the results that pleases my eyes the best.  Thank you crown r n7 for your support in my builds, it’s greatly appreciated!

It certainly looks like you where up for the chalenge of brush painting this whole aircraft. very nice job and theraputic I bet as well.

 

I also felt that I wanted to do something that most modelers would not attempt.  Just something that’s kind of crazy!  lol!  You know Uncle Jay Jay, I never even looked at it that way being; “Theraputic I bet as well”, but you’re correct.  It was very relaxing and not stressful at all. Thank you Uncle Jay Jay for always supporting my builds and giving me a sense of direction.

Completed the bottom half painting of the B-17G.  Next up is the wing tops needs to be painted OD.  Thank you my fellow forum members for your support.

Just a quick note:

The reason I’m hand painting the Revell 1/48 B-17G is that it‘s a challenge to do so but the biggest reason is that on my next build which is the Tamiya 1/48 Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien (Tony) will be a technical challenge for me in that the camouflage on the Ki-61 is very tedius at best.  

I‘ll be using the Iwata HP-CS Eclipse

and the NEO by Iwata TRN1 Gravity Feed Trigger Airbrush.

Here are six pics of the underside of the B-17G.  As you can see, the fueselage underside has been hand painted as well, this time with a acrylic paint.  I normally utilize paints that are easily accessible to purchase.  

The closest place of course is Hobby Lobby as my son is a manger at Walmart of which is in the same commons as Hobby Lobby.  I’ll just text him a pic of the paint I need and he picks it up for me.  The acrylic paint utilized is Vallejo Model Color Sky Grey 70.989.  Thank you my fellow forum members for your support.
