Very nice job with the brush!!! How much did you thin the paint? Or was it straight out of the bottle?

 

After the thourough mixing, I use the paint righ out of the paint bottle.  And that’s pretty much how I do it.  Wether it’s Tamiya, Testors, and or Model Master, I make sure the pigment is binded with it‘s medium then I’ll utilize it.  Only when I use Vallejo color I need it‘s proprietary thinner to do the job at hand.  This will also depend on the product I’m utilizing.  I am a fan of Vallejo pre-mixed for AB product.  This can be used straight out of the Squeeze bottle but that’s just another topic I’m not getting into.

Yes, as a study in brush painting practice, I’ve decided to do the interior/exterior paints by hand instead of an AB technique.  I’m either brave to do this on a 1/48 B-17G as you notated or really really stupid for that fact.  lol!

I do know this, I don’t have enough paint to finish this kit and I must purchase more Model Master Enamel Olive Drab to finish this kit.  Maybe approximately one more jar or two more to be on the safe side, and I can always utilize what’s left over from this build.

Merry Christmas, Toshi and Mrs. Toshi!  Another great update!

Do you apply your colors by hand?  Do you have to take any particular steps to get a smooth finish?  I found that I could apply Tamiya's acrylics by hand, and get as thin and smooth a finish as with an airbrush, if I thinned them, just as they must be thinned for airbrushing.  So I wondered if you did anything similar, with the Model Master paints.

 

Thank you the Baron.  Yes, the entire interior/exterior build was hand painted with a brush set Mrs. Toshi purchased for me at Hobby Lobby.  As far as any particular steps that were taken to get a smooth finish, I used three bamboo skewers to stir the Model Master Olive Drab Enamel FS34087 thouroughly.  

Then I used the paint product right out of the bottle as is without any thinner.  It is my humble opinion in that the pigment must bind with the existing thinner in the bottle to get a decent product.  After that is insured, the brush quality is important.  

I then normally practice a couple of strokes on a piece of styrene and when my hand feels comfortable, I go ahead and paint the kit part(s).  Sometimes I succeed in not getting any brush strokes and sometimes I fail to do so.  For me, as I’m just inexperienced, it’s a matter of practice makes perfect.

As for Tamiya paints and Testors paints, I use them straight out of the bottle after a thourough mixing.  The only thinning I do is with Vallejo Model Color. I’ll use their proprietary AB paint thinner.  Normally a 75/25 ratio depending on what I’m painting.  Of course I thin paints anytime I AB.  Again depending on what I’m painting and how thick the pigment is.  That’s why I really enjoy utilizing Vallejo pre-mixed AB colors.  No need to Thin things out when you AB.  But that’s a whole different aspect that I just thought I would add.

Anyway, that’s my humble explanation and style of brush painting.  the Baron, thank you so very much for the holiday well wishing as well as the read, question, and reply.  I greatly appreciate it and enjoy our conversations.

I already have a Monogram 1/48 Visible B-17G in NMF so for me, OD was the best choice in this build.  Thank you for taking the time out to visit my B-17G build.

Merry Christmas to my Fellow FSM Forum Members,

Until my children come over for dinner, Mrs. Toshi and I are just relaxing.  I’ll be throwing a eight pound prime rib roast into the oven later.  This has been our Christmas traditional meal for as long as I can remember.  We also have loaded baked potatoes and broccoli served with the prime rib.  Of course au jus and horse radish accompanies the meal with silver dollar fresh baked rolls.  

This year is a little different, our grandson is eighteen months old and is more than eager to rip open Christmas presents galore.  At his age things like this makes his day.  Things like this makes our day!

Mrs. Toshi is playing computer games, something the neurologist recommends.  I on the other hand has gone to the bench to continue my B-17G build.  Making models was a recommendation my therapists hoped I do, now I can’t wait to assemble styrene to styrene and place little drops of Tamiya Extra Thin Glue between the seams to cement parts together!  

So here is the assembled fuselage.  There’s no gaps in the seams so just some minor sanding is needed.

As for the bomb bay, it is strictly stock or OOB.  out of box.  The only modification I’ve done was to open up and cut the bomb bay doors open for viewing.  I might do a bit more scratch building and cut the ailerons off and reattach them at an angle, we will have to see if my grandson Ezra allows me to do that during his nappy time.  Lol!
