Color of Sopwith F.1 Camel Underwings
Posted by Bob D on Saturday, January 20, 2024 11:43 PM

Need suggestions on the color of the under side of the wings and bottom of the aircraft. The directions say Sail Cloth but the pictures look like Light Tan. I thought Sail Cloth was a Grey White color. I am building a Sopwith F.1 Camel. Any help appreciated.

They were clear doped linen so the color on the bottom is a slightly yellowish white but it is affected by the upper color, being slightly transparent. It wasn't a paint color as such so there is no need to be to accurate.  The linen was not a bright white in raw form either.  I'm pretty sure Humbrol makes a Clear Doped Linen.

My go-to for clear doped linen in Tamiya acrylics is X-2 Gloss White (about half a color cup full) with a drop or two of XF-60 Dark Yellow mixed in. Then I do a light dry-brushing and shading with burnt sienna oils.

If you'd like a visual, probably the easiest one to see is the Eduard Morane Saulnier type N I did for the (now long-ago) WW1 Aeroplane GB here. (I've used it for my Camels and Spads as well.) All on my Instagram feed:

I think that I used Testors Ivory in the little 1/4 ounce bottle on my Sopwith Camel build a couple of years back.
