I was just curious, John...do you have any relation to any Ryans in south east Pennsylvania?

You look a hell-of-a-lot like my Uncle John, and A bit like my dad and also share features of my aunt Sue...

Is that a compliment?  So far as I know I have no relatives anything like close in Pennsylvania, so it must be coincidence.

Well, here are the pics is promised. Wanted to finish the PE part.  The carpet monster ate 2 of them but they were a minor part of the finished tub, so you wont notice.  I'm having a blast on this Rhino.  Can't wait to see other's builds start!!!!

Remember what i said about the injector marks in the intake trunks?  ALOT of Mr. Surfacer was used.  Now i have to wait for it to dry before i can continue.

neat, folks are already diving into their builds.  I am still seeking reference material on the IL-2.  I'll be hitting the local library tonight to see what they have on the shelves.  Can anyone recommend any good websites with shots of the Stormovik Single or double-seater?  I know there are a couple of air parks/museums that have them on display, but haven't been able to find any strong shots of the plane yet.  Plenty of black-and white shots, but a lot of those are fairly grainy.  Thanks.

Freddie from LI here

First, I would like to thank my Secret Santa, Hans Von Hammer, for my gift, a Tamiya A6M2, Model 21, "Zeke".  I get another chance at this kit as I "screwed the pooch" with the first attempt.  Just like last year's kit the AM SB2U, one that I had previously goofed up, I received redemption from my Secret Santa as well as a cool model to build.  Now I'll get another shot at this 1:48 "Zeke".

I hope all had a terrific Christmas and received all the things you were hoping for.  For this modeler, knowing my oldest son is here in the USA, and not on some rock strewn battlefield in Afghanistan, was my Christmas wish.  Remember to think of our soldiers, from ALL allied countries, over there away from their respective families this holiday, and how they are keeping us safe.

Again Hans, thanks for the kit and I'll get busy on here as soon as I can, not as fast as some, (Who shall remain nameless, but are building a P-51 with 20mm guns...) but I'll get cranked over on her real soon.

Merry Christmas to all and have a Happy Healthy and Safe New Years as well

Regards,

Freddie from LI

You're welcome Freddie, by all means... I'm glad you liked the kit and think it's a "Second Chance", lol...  Thanks for the kind words about our Servicemen and Women (I've got one each deployed right now, this's the first year that both were gone for Christmas at the same time.  It was always ME that missed Christmas because of the military before, ya know..)

Just so ya know, I bought the last two of those Zekes in Hobby Lobby and sent one to you, so I'll be watching your build closely, as I've never built a Tamiya aircraft before (I'm a Revell/Monogram guy, by and large, although there's a few Hobbycraft/Academy/AMT etc. in my past) and am interested in how it'll look.  Have you decied to go with the Green or the Grey?  Whichever you pick, I'll do the other, ok?

Happy New Year, sir...

A quick note- I opened the A-26 and it is a very wonderful kit. Definitely would look best in three color SEA camoflage. And, Carshark had the thought to put together a great CD with complete technical manuals, kit reviews and good information from the museum where he works. Thank you very much Alex and Hillary, that was kind.

I am going to rent "Always" again and watch it in prep for the PBY GB, and IIRC there's quite a bit of A-26 action in it as well, but I'm thinking Viet Nam, to go along with the big CH-46 I got, put me in the proper mindset.

Is there a good colour in the Xtracrylics range for Japense interior colour?

Yes and no. They have no dedicated Japanese colors. (I have to rack my brain here) Mitsubishi cockpit green is very close to british interior gray/green. If anything it's a bit lighter. I've used it before straight from the bottle (yes - Xtracrylics) and no one has noticed.

As for the blue/green clear laquer - there is one in the Gunze and MM acryl range. I can give you the mix I used for tamiya paints when I built the Gekko from the first SSGB if you need.

You can find that build here: http://agapemodels.com/?p=96

Tamiya paint codes are usefull to. I dont use enamals these days so i have to work with acrylics.

How do i know what colour to use though? Im not going looking out production numbers or something like that. My plan is to finish her in Captured markings, the all over white scheme with green crosses. The scheme was used after the surrender for any Japenese plane flying.

I fought with the mustang's wondscreen today for most of the afternoon. What I was trying to do is fair the clear part in so there is no visible seam between the fuse and the clear part. Something common to many P-51 kits is that the windscreen attaches to the airframe along what would be a frame for the clear part on the prototype. Getting a good clean joint here is not impossible but not easy. The ideal way to mold this part would be to mold part of the fuselage with the windscreen so when the part was installed the seam would be away from the clear part, giving the builder much more room to work. AM did not do this but to their credit not many others do either.

To fair the clear part in I normally Future the part to protect it from CA then CA it in place from the outside. When the glue is dry I use sanding sticks to sand down the glue joint until all is smooth then use a tri grit stick to polish out the clear piece, followed by some polishing compound and buffing with the dremel. Today it didn't work so well. The fit of the windscreen was horrid so the CA seeped inside and made a huge mess out of the coaming. I removed the part, cleaned everything up and tried again with gel CA. Long story short, I removed the part twice more and replaced it with a spare before I found a combination of part and technique that I could live with. It's going to have to do and I think after paint is applied it should look ok.

Other work consisted of landing gear and prop painting. I used the excellent Ultracast three blade prop here. The UC blades replace the entire prop assembly in the kit and make a huge improvement as the kit blades are way to thick and look toy-like. In a fit of boredom while waiting on various bits to cure and dry I decided to drill out the holes in the wheels. Out came the drills and both side got reamed followed by thinning the inside of the wheel. I'll not try it again. The parts were painted and left to dry. I forced myself away from the bench to avoid messing something up and will resume work tomorrow. This will include finishing the seam work of which there is plenty, masking the clear parts and hopefully getting the plane in primer.

After thinking about it I'm wishing I had a vac mold machine. I'd take another AM kit off the pile and use it to make a mold for the windscreen section. When I did another kit then I could just cut out the whole section of the fuse that contains the windscreen and panels around it and replace it with a vac molded part. This would beat that problem with the ill fitting clear part.

Hmmmm.......

Pay good attention to the intermediate cowl halves and the upper cowl gun panel. Some of these kits got out of the factory with incorrect sprues so if the kit don't want to go together right here you'll have to call up AM for correct parts. Test fit before commiting glue.

The SBD's don't need anything. They are so good, there was very little ever made for them other than seatbelts. I do recomend Ultracast seats. Eduard did an etch set for it, but it may be long gone. A fast snoop on Sprue Brothers yeilded nothing but Quickboost exhausts.

What Drew said. And follow the directions, very important. I only differed the instructions when it came to the map table, all else was by the book.

The only trouble to watch out for is the lower rear wing to fuse seam. this is the only place I had to use putty on mine.

Hey guys! Looks like everyone is starting to get busy.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while- out of town visiting relatives. Had a great time in Fredericksburg, TX, now I'm back home.

God bless each and every one of you- thanks for being in this GB!

Happy New Year!

Thanks, Az. I was hoping to get it done this year but it's going to be close. Decals are on at this minute but more weather, flat coat, prop, antenna, guns, those things still have to be done. We'll see. To add more time most of my very subtle weather and shading has disappeared under the gloss coat.

Well, I didn't make it. It's twenty after the hour and I still have a couple of small things left to do that I'm going to leave for tomorrow. Got into a battle with the canopy that continues to be a problem for me. I'll cover it in the finished built post tomorrow.

Drew, Steve, thanks guys. Slow down, eh? Just working at my normal pace. What I really need is a big project that just takes longer. I use Tamiya tape for masking my clear parts.

Happy New Year everyone!

As Jon said you people are starting to get busy, actually you HK are as goog as done and with such a good looking result.
As for me I'm still working on my previous "project" and waiting for the aftermarke parts I ordered for my helo.

Done!

Ok, here is the gift I received from Jim, Jmart. He knows me so well! Accurate Miniatures P-51. A guy can never have to many mustangs. If one built a different one every two weeks for his entire life he'd never build them all.

I started work on this one as soon as I opened it, as the bench was freshly cleared. Much has been said about the kit in various forums so I'll not spend time here to repeat nothing more then it's a nice kit and the only game in town for a 48th Allison Mustang. Still.

I spent about my normal time on the kit though this time I didn't do a lot extra to it. Just a few small things.

The tail wheel got a rework with some wire. The cockpit got radio antenna wire and armor for the seat and gereric seat belts made from tape.

I replaced the kit prop, which is to thick, with the lovely Ultracast Curtiss blades and used Moskit Allison exhausts. Though much work, I drilled out the openings in the kit wheels. I like the result very well.

The kit canopy gave me fits. In my obsession to try and blend the clear part to the fuse I fought it and fought it. Removed it three times and tried again. Finally thought I had it good enough. Masked up the clear for painting and went about my buisness.

I dropped the elevators too. Some know, some may not. The reason most pics show the elevators drooped is because there is a control lock on the floor at the bottom of the stick that's used to lock the controls and keep them from bouncing around in the wind while the a/c is parked. To lock the stick it was pushed forward and a pin was inserted. The forward stick movment posed the elevators like you see here.

Another mod I made was the 20mm guns in the wings. The kit representations are cartoonish at best. The springs are way over done and not really springs at all but rings molded around the barrels. I remade them from plastic rod and tiny strips of tape. Paint and drybrush and they look much better when compared to photos.

Paint is MM enamels with some Tamiya acryls tossed in where I felt like it. Weather is very minimal, just a few smudges here and there, some small scratches and a light exhaust stain. I used MV lenses in the wings behind the clear perspex pieces.

When all the paint work was done and sealed with a good clearcoat I pulled off the masks. What greeted me was something that has haunted me for years. A bad fog had entered the cockpit somehow and clouded the windows. Nuts.

I've tried many things to prevent this. This time, after installing the parts I went over all the seams with Testors clear part cement with a brush to seal the area but alas, it didn't help. Somehow the fog of painting still got in. I had to remove the canopy frame a fourth time to clean it up which ruined portions of the paint. After reinstallation I touched up the framing with a brush.

I really like these kits for some reason. I have four, now five, built and in the case with two more in the stash. One of the built kits is a MKIa that I convered from a P-51a using the superb Ultracast conversion and one of the kits in the pile is the AM mustang Ia. Cool! Another brit 'stang! The other is the F-6A which is this kit with a camera. They will look great when added to the others. In the meanwhile, I've been doing some research looking for refs for another mustang, a D or K that was in the Fort Wayne ANG in the early fifties. I have a Tamiya D that will wear these markings.

Thanks, Jim, for the kit! Thanks Jon for sponsering the GB! Comments welcome!
