AIRCRAFT - Concorde/SST Group Build

Dwight, I don't know what the 1/100 Doyusha kit goes for in the Phillipines, but I got mine here for 3,200 yen ($29 USD). Are Japanese kits marked up substantially there? I think you've mentioned that Tamiya and Hasegawa are not that different to what they sell for here. I'd imagine the Revell kit is probably more expensive than the Doyusha kit.
The only problem with the Doyusha kit (other than the standard clunky, dodgy Doyusha detailing) is that it's the prototype aircraft, with funky canopy and shortened post-vertical stabilizer fuselage, and probably other differences I'm not aware of. Which is only a problem if you don't want to model a prototype, of course.
Which I didn't. All the pictures on the box are of production aircraft, though, so I kinda got hoodwinked. I bought it at one the rare shops in Japan where the boxes are sealed, so I coudn't take a pre-purchase poke around the box like I usually do at most other shops.

Thanks for the suggestion MMF. However, I don't really have a big budget. Shipping costs always makes the kit more expensive and I am always just trying to be contented with what I can get locally.

If you really get stuck there is always the 1/100 Doyusha one, they seem to be rather readily avilable online.

Doing great, DJ. I never thought the kit would require as much filling as I can see in the pics. Guess you need to inscribe some of the filled panel lines huh?

Here's a couple more pics, after an hour of extra work on Day#3...

First of all, the detail of the apex of the wing. The joint there is a bit poor and the shape difficult to restore. I felt Milliput would work better as a) it does not shrink; b) it can be worked straight after application; c) it's hard as a rock when dry and sanding any excess away would damage the plastic more than the milliput (normal putty is softer than plastic, making it easier to control the shape).

Next is a view of the upper side after application of Milliput then a thin layer of putty, the latter smoothed over with Nail Polish Remover... Priming will reveal if I did, or not, a good job...!

Here are my first pics... the first one shows the type of gaps I'm facing under the leading edge and around the engine nacelles, the second a leter view with putty over the 'problem' areas... Of particular concern are the 'sunken' areas on top of the wings...

Darren, How are you going to patch those nasty looking gaps? I've stuck as much as poss with superglue so that nothing moves (I had to put some plasticard under the joint), then have been using Milliput to fill the gaps. The hardest so far is to 're-shape' the joint where the front of the wing jouns the fuselage... I wish they had done the wholw of the wing as a separate element, rather than 2% on the fuselage and the remaining 98% as part of the wing sub-assembly. Do you have those 'sunken' areas on the top of the wings, above and just outside the engines..?

Adding details onto those undercarriage legs sounds like a good idea. The front leg in particular is very visible!

Well, I went to two shops yesterday and still no news on the Revell 1/144 Concorde kits. They have however, Panda B1B Lancer (in 3 variants), Revell Airbus Beluga and some Revell Fighters Planes that just came in.

Looks like I still have to wait.

I've started my Revell kit and the airframe is now taking shape. I have to agree with Domi-getting those wings onto that kit while trying to keep everything else "in-line" is a complete! anyhow, I managed it. There's quite a gap to fill on the leading edges on the wings, so filling/sanding will be my next job.

I'm toying with the idea to detailing the undercarridge legs with some thin copper wire like the photo on the side of the kits box and if I can figure out a way to do it perhaps the wheel bays as well. I'll see how it goes.

I've read somewhere that the Airfix is better in terms of shape... But I think in details, with the nice engraved surface of the Revell kit, the Airfix offering shows its age....

yep, the prototypes were 001 (French), and 002 (British), then came the pre-production aircraft 01 (British) and 02 (French), and finaly the production model numbered 1 to... 16 (I think!)

You've told me before, but I've already forgotten: the British Airways prototype (which I'd like to build with this kit) was called Airframe 01, right? Air France was Airframe 02?

Well, due to a request to do a build for Armour Modelling magazine, I won't be able to jump into my Doyusha 1/100 Concorde as I had planned. Excuses, excuses!
I'll be reading and posting, though!

I got started on my Concorde yesterday. It's the Revell kit. Went together better when I first built it a decade or so ago (was it that long ago!)... I'm having a horrible time in getting the bottom of the wings to fit properly into the top halves (the top halves include the leading edge of the bottom and the joint there is poor, to say the least...). This has made the engine nacelles fit poorly as well, but nothing that Milliput can't fix, I'm sure...

I'm a bit disappointed by the number of sink marks on the fuselage (as reported earlier), and a number of areas where the plastic has sunk a little (top of the fuselage where the locating pins are located, and mostly on the uper surface of the wings, over the engines... Again Milliput, putty and nail polish remover should help restoring a flat(ter) or rather more even surface. I'm going to do something about the main wheel wells as there's no 'walls' and one can see through the aircraft...

So, all in all, a bit disappointed so far, but the fit problems could just be me... I do not remember them the first time I built the kit... Revell'a airliners have greatly improved since the release of this Concorde... There's a BIG difference in quality between that Concorde and their later Airbus A330/340 and Fokker 100 I've also built...

and as far as the intrepid and the concord, they are gunna keep on on some sort of barge, from what i've been hearing!! I wish the would put it on the ship!!!!

And seeing that i'm only an hour and a half away from the city, i am going to see her sometime soon, and take ATON of reference pics, so i can havesomething to model her by...........

Would this be a substitute for the Airfix kit?

Greg, if you do get the airfix kit and don't want the BA decals, it would be real nice if you could send 'em my way! If you need any markings for your "what if?" let me know and I'll rummidge through my spares.

Hi Guys, i am still looking for an airfix concorde so i can join in with this.(TANGO i can't find that spare decal sheet that i mentioned - or the kit either - if i do get a concorde do you still want the BA decals?) i remember seeing a pic of a concorde in singapore airlines marks some years back, from what i have read it was painted only on one half with the other still in the old B A livery. i think that would make an interesting model but finding the decals would be a pain. failing that would a "what if" model fit in with this group build? i ain't saying what i am planning as i havn't fully made up my mind yet. have fun with your pocket rockets.......Greg

I think Draw Decals have a sheet with the Union Jack scheme, and another one with the doors, windows, stencils...

I got mine!
It's the 1/144 Revell kit.
I'm building this one for my friend Dave and he wants me to re-create the scene of the last Concorde taxi-ing(Spelling?) towards the crowd at Heathrow with the nose down and two union flags being flown from the cockpit He has much more confidence in my skills than I do!

Had a problem as the kit decals are not the latest BA livery but a bloke at my club recons he can help out. Wish me luck guys-I'm gonna need it!

I'm ready to go with my Doyusha 1/100 Concorde.
It'll be OOB, and I'll build it as the British Airways prototype.

Well, since I've not been able to locate a (decently priced) VEB's Tupolev Tu-144, I'm falling back onto the 1/144 Concorde from Revell... This kit is readily available here in shops, and sells for £13 (that's just about $20).

I've had no luck in locating the 'Pepsi' decals either... so it looks as if I'm going to go for the late Air France scheme as proposed in the box. Unless I did a 'what if' scheme... Virgin Atlantic...?

The kit is good looking but I noticed a couple of little ejection sink marks on each side of the fuselage, close to the row of windows... I built this kit before, I mean several years ago, and I do not remember those at all... Strange... The detail of the landing gear is commendable although the gear wells are bare, but little of that will be seen. The decal sheet is impressive with tons of little stencils...
