Looking good guys. I almost have the construction finished and after I do the schurzen, hope to prime or paint.

Well...it was tight...Hans (L), Fritz (R) and Helmut (the gunner) had to do some pushing and elbowing Smile [:)] . I had no idea that the cupola is so cramped...

Some more progress on the 1/48 Panzer IV Ausf J
Posted by taxtp on Sunday, February 8, 2009 6:45 AM

Hi all,

I've made a little more progress over the weekend. Probably not as much as I'd hoped for. Next job is to paint the wheels and attach.

Cheers

Tony

Nice work, gentlemen.  Tony, I like the "leopard spot" camo.  Castelnuovo, it sure is cramped in there. One suggestion is to drill out the guns.

that wirblewind turret looks like a tight fit for the crew.looks good so far.the leopard spots are unusual ,are you going by a photo ? what unit is this?a little update.the blaclk oil wash has been aplied first to the tracks and lower hull.as you can see that the brightness was thoroughly subdued.a more pleasing kind of used look.i took the photos on a rough textured piece of foam.as usual theres lots of small stuff yet to be added.any comments welcome.Thumbs Up [tup]

Lots of good work, fellas!

Tigerman - be sure to shoot us a pic once your construction is complete! Big Smile [:D]

Stick Man - will add your Ausf. C on the front page. All we need now is a Hornisse and a Mobelwagen and we've got all of the "major" variants covered. Thumbs Up [tup]

DBaumi60 - that 1/72 Hummel certainly qualifies. Will add you to the front page - welcome to the GB! Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

O don't tempt me. I have the Tamiya Modelwagen and the LR Flak 43 in my stash and very nearly got the DML Hornisse today.

mmc: I'm doing the EXACT same kit...I'm a bit ahead of you though, build is done, post-shading complete!  I didn't add any AM goodies either.  Some of the parts, especially the schurzen are "clunky" at best...sure builds quick though.  Watch for those holes and ejector marks on the bottom of the fenders...they're tough to sandBanged Head [banghead]Grumpy [|(]!!!

I've got to the painting stage on another project ( Tamiya B1 Bis /forums/1088505/ShowPost.aspx) and I decided to repaint my A/O as well. Here it is with just the base coat of dark yellow. I switched to Tamiya paint this time to see if it responds to washes any differently than the PolyS did.

Everyone's build are looking great. Keep it up.

Well I deserved it I guess. I tried to cut corners. I glued on the Tamiya kit's brackets and rails for the side schurzen, which is the Eduard PE and of course the hangers are too thick. So, I sanded them down the best I could. They are still a precarious fit at that. I of course lost a pe bracket (they are so blinking small!) Amazingly, the Eduard pack doesn't have any spares! You've got to be kidding. I'm going to have to think of something. So far, I got the brackets on only 2 of the 10 schurzen plates. Hehehe, I'm going to go to the asylum now. LOL

detailfreak: Did I mention the richness of your paintjob!?  The color looks real deep with just the right amount of sheen...share your paint mfr, technique, etc., pleaseThumbs Up [tup]  Almost hate to see winter camo' over it...nah...you can never go wrong with the winter lookWink [;)]!

Guys: Here's a WIP of my Jagdpanzer IV L70 Lang.  It is the old Tamiya kit...and as expected the parts are "clunky".  The schurzen are too thick not to mention the brackets that hold them on.  In scale they would be a min. 1" thick steel...enough strength to hold a ton...literally!  I built this bad-boy in less than 8 hours though, which was nice.  This is my first AFV where I will be leaving the color Dunkelgelb.  I lightened the Tamiya dark yellow with some white and a pinch of buff (thanks again wing_nut for that info) and sprayed everything.  Then a little post-shading (first picture), added decals and SEVEN filter washes (second photo).  Here's a side-by-side progression where I'm at as of last night:

SMJ - looks great! Hard to get a plain dark yellow paintjob to look interesting, but you've pulled it off nicely. Thumbs Up [tup]

Only comment/criticism has to do with the decals...and I have a feeling a lot of the problem is the old Tamiya decals themselves. They tend to be very thick, and don't lay down particularly well. Next time you may want to trim the excess clear film off of the edges to make them look more 'painted on'? Hopefully the upcoming battering they're going to receive through your extensive weathering process will help them blend in a bit more! Laugh [(-D]

Thanks... still A LOT of layers to go too!  This is my "guinea pig" dunkelgelb attempt.  I want to get the kinks out before I tackle the 251 and Panther A.

Thanks for the tip.  I had the same problem with the T34/85...the additional layering will help it blendThumbs Up [tup].

Shoot, you're just getting into the weathering, and I have to say that the kinks are already out!

I wish you could see the real thing...it looks a bit monochromatic...don't get me wrong, iIam VERY pleased with the results so far ESPECIALLY the streaks on the schurzen.

I kinda' test myself at the end of each weathering step before I trudge on...I ask:

"If I added a nice panel line wash now, would I be proud to put it on display???"

If I can answer "yes", I move on with confidence...Wink [;)]
