TD - looks good man! Despite your "slow" build it seems to be moving along pretty quickly right now. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]

Taking a short (4-day), well-needed vacation to Florida to play a bit of golf...ironically, this will result in me having MUCH more forum time after the rounds each day. Hoping there'll be a bunch of work I can take a look at. Sadly, it was only 81 here today...Cool [8D]

Hey Dupes,

Enjoy your vacation!  Here's an update that you can view and comment on. if you wish..

The Trumpeter Bruckenleger, still ohne brucken.  The bridge support rails have been installed and the bridge sub-assemblies have been assembled and painted in base coat (see below).  As described in the previous post, the chassis was painted with a base coat of Tamiya Panzer Gray and then panels were highlighted with the same lightened with Tamiya flat White.  Tonight, the chassis was weathered with oils to mimic accumulation of dust, dirt and mud by using oil washes...

... consisting of various mixtures Flake White and VanDyke Brown; initially consisting of very light brown (i.e., 90% white) and progressively getting darker by adding more VanDyke brown, until it was almost 80% or so.

One mistake I made in photography;  I set the lights too close and actually started melting the plastic!!! (see the transmission plate in photos 2 and 3).  I've got some ideas a to how to correct the problem; but any suggestions on how to handle the damage will be appreciated.

Decals went on without a hitch, without Future but with liberal treatment with setting solution.

The rest of the bridge sub-assemblies have been constructed and painted...

The Bruckenlager is nearing completion.  Comment sand criticisms are welcomed.

Jeez...that was pretty easy. I think I'm going to start going on vacation more often! Just think, you guys will be able to accelerate your builds to amazing levels! Laugh [(-D]

Pordoi - she looks really good. Do you just have bridge weathering left to do?

Hi all,

I'm calling my 1/48 Panzer Iv Ausf J complete. Here are some photos. I'll keep going on a base for it in the background.

I hope you like it.

Cheers

Yeah, they've become a real thorn in my side...I WON"T EVER make that mistake again....BUT, the efforts are not wasted by any means though...I'm still charting new territory on this oil paint technique and I was willing to "donate" the Jagd to the experiment.  Wait until you see the next round of pic's with the chips and scratches..ALL the drybrush work REALLY paid off!

I wouldn't let the decals get ya down too much.  I think your weathering has gone a long way to blending them in.  Are they perfect, no.  But, they are a heck of a lot better now than they were when you started the process, and I don't think they take too much away from the build.

As you say, lesson learned.

PORDOI:the bruckenlager is looking great so far.sorry to hear about the trans. cover.you may have to chalk it up to lesson learned.it does'nt appear to be to bad.perhaps a tarp or some spare track could draw attention away from this.on the down side,i think your tracks are on backwards, maybe not.if yours are correct then i have several corrections to make.TAX:that little j looks to be a nice addition to the bragging shelf, great camo and weathering.whats next?SMJ:looking forward to seeing that jagdpanzer completed.have'nt looked at your weathering tut yet but i will stop by.

A little more than that, Dupes.  The winch mechanism still has to be attached to the rear of the chassis.  It's already assembled, painted and ready to go.  Then, the masking over the wooden slats of the bridge needs to be removed and then the slats painted.  After that, it's back to weathering and final assembly.  If I get time, it might be finished this weekend.

taxtp:  very nice "J".  Turret armor and large schurzen scare me.

Hmmm.  Gotta admit that PzIV track orientation is something that I've screwed up before, but I was sure I got it right this time.  At least it seems to be consistent with these photos.

ok,now for your viewing,a little update.the right side is propped into place to check the fit.tried something a little different with the paint.consistecy was like milk.one coat was applied over red oxide primer very thin.you could still see the primer after three coats.gave a nice streaked used look in my opinion.just had to try someting diff.probably wo'nt hardly be noticable after more weathering and such.guess the first photo is an interior shot showing some stowage thats being installed(just a test fit here).the second photo is the side.and a forward view of the fighting compartment.lastly a view of the drivers hatch area, don't know how dragon accomplished it but the hatches for the driver and radio operator are way to big.so some downsizing is in order.thanks for your time. PORDOI:the track debacle is being corrected.will do an inventory on correctness later on the rest of the shop.sure is tuff trying to get a clean break, suprisingly though they are seperating.thanks again buddy.Bow [bow]

pordoi- Beautiful work man!!!! I do believe that your tracks are on correct. That's something that I triple check whenever I build any panzer IV or III based vehicle. Great job.

Sorry guys about the multiple posts, just trying to play catch up.

SMJ- Great work on the Jagdpanzer. You must be putting in some serious hours on that finish.

TD4438- Really nice Kugelblitz. I've been looking at this kit for years, but never have pulled the trigger to buy it. Sometimes hard to find or way overpriced. What kind of camo are you going to choose?

And everyone else that I've most likely missed, GREAT BUILDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some great builds going on here guys:

detailfreak - is that the Nashorn?  Man, I'm loving your work on that.  I'm also doing a Nashorn for this build, so you are giving me a lot of ideas.

Castlenuovo - looks like you are making some solid progress.  I look forward to more.

pordoi - LOVIN' the bridge layer!  By the way, your tracks are fine...

I think I have commented on everyone else's builds.  If I have not, please accept my apologies!

It is most definitely NOT too late to join - however, the StuG III does not qualify for this GB. Only vehicles based on the Panzer IV chassis are allowed. Refer to the first page, there's a nearly complete list of available vehicles.

Great work you guys! Will have more time to peruse and poke around tomorrow. Wink [;)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Edit Edit: you're right my bad panzer 3, i'll get cracking on fixing up my old tank.

TD4438 They were a couple of pages back, just a couple of warnings of things to look out for, but i guess you have got past it now. Thats looking good. How have you found the build, my main issue was with the intructions, a couple of errors. I think the kit is pretty accurate. The vehicle was based on the early Ausf J hull, with those new types of exhaust but still 4 return rollers.

Finally able to upload my pics, so here's my build so far. I have had this kit and the PE in the stash for about 10 years or so, really glad the excuse came up to build it.

Construction just about complete and ready for painting. I leave my tools wheels and tracks off untill the end.

I painted useing Tamiya Acrylic's. I am thyen following SmJ's weatheirng steps to the letter to see what i like and don't like. I still need more practice at washer's to get a lighter weathered look. But so far it's ok. It had a wash and a pin wash. I now have a week away so will have plenty of time to let it dry before i finish it off.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

detailfreak:  I really like the streaking effect; subtle but very natural.  try not to lose it in your subsequent weathering.  I'll also echo SMJ's comments about the weathering so far, especially around the forward hatches.  Good work.

Castelnuovo:  overall fine effort.  I like the dryed mud and the deployed crew step is a nice touch.  Most other PIVs show it in the stowed position.  If I could offer a little constructive criticism; the model is a bit too monotone.  Two things might help.  First, a pin wash would bring out detail in the panel lines and hatches.  Also, overspraying the basecoat with lightened gray will add depth.  Search for Doog's WIP threads in the Armor forum for some really detailed methods and instruction.  He's a master.  Second, watch the decals; they look a bit silvered.  You could either coat the surface with future prior to applying the decals, or use plenty of setting solution (e.g., Solvaset) to set them down if you apply to a matte finish.  Look  forward to more.

Bish:  I wouldn't do much more with washes; it looks great as is and you'll risk darkening it too much.  I think you've attained a very nice weathered, dusty look as is.
