Regia Aeronautica GB II (06/15/09 to 06/15/10)

If we were voting on the nose colour Aaron I would go with the purple also, it's way too cool.

I got most of the kit decals down tonight and most went down well. They all had cracks on them so I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will seal ok and not silver on me. I had one national i nsignia shatter a bit but I put all the pieces together. Now for the problem of squadron or group badges. The two choices in the kit were not for smoke rings so I looked at the Grant decal photo but no joy. I can make the numbers. Going to search the internet for suggestions. Will post pics tomorrow when the decals are set.

Woo hoo, i enlisted another sucker entrant to the GB. Added to the front page Bondo. How is it that everytime you post something i feel hungry? LOL. As you may have workwed out, homework gets dolled out on a regular basis. Keeps the plebs on thier toes you know. Yours is to find a period pic of your plane and post it. Either that or send everyone in the GB some of the food!! Good man, glad you accept. Dave told me to set it BTW.

I like to feel that im contributing to the build. This shifts Sucks big. I have a long weekend coming up, so hopefully ill be able to get some serious work done to the plane then. When i get in and have something to eat, then shower, then do all the stuff the SWMBOed has thought about during the day but cant, because of her foot, its 10.00pm. Booooo.

Still bleeding Daves fault. Aaron, set him homework. Anyhoos, ive got to go to work very shortly, wish me luck.

Well I am going to give Dave a "Get out of Fault Card" today. I remember hin posting a pic sometime back with a Gazilloin hand painted spots. This stuff is enough to make a person Daffy. Alex- has refused to pick up a brush and help , all he wants to do is tell stories about ~ "There once was a girl from Nantucket Who crossed the sea in a bucket" The guy is making me crazy I tell ya.

Man to do that in 1/72 and look so smooth! Very sharp Sean! Very skilled at painting !

Very quiet! Everyone must be hard at work trying to figure out my cowling color issue. Yes I Am sure that is it! You fellows are the best!

Try to keep this short and sweet!  After singing Rick James and reading anything I could find it seems that white would be the safest choice!

Looking at the picture as a whole yet again you can see anything painted white seems to stand out fairly well.

The cowling even sems to show residue from the MG's. The neat demarkation line and even color leads me t think this was not an overpainted white.  The only other choice s yellow or pink.

Sorry Dave I had to go with my first instinct.

 I forgot to ask? What is a Wallace & Gromit tape? Some new masking agent?

Sean those spots look like theyve been sprayed on! Whats your technique? Very impressive so far.

Aaron, i agree with your choice. I tend to agree, knowing that trying to gauge colours from a black and white is notoriously difficult, the nose cowl does look yellow to me as well. Yet it might be pink! If someone kicks off at your choice. There IS only one person to blame.

Bondo has been posting images of distant relatives so thought I'd post some of my own.  Great, Great Great Uncle from some remote branch of the family tree.  I need some cheese and crackers.

Guy -  Nothing special, just a number zero paintbrush. I have a reference picture and draw a outline of a porkchop or other shape and color it in. I did add a Mickey Mouse shape in the mess - can you spot it...ha ha

Dave -  Nice picture of the relatives   I am using Wallace for my avatar pic over on the UAMF .

Sean, very nice work on the camo spots. Lots of work went into that I am sure and it looks great. Did the same thing once on a Japanese scheme but that was many moons ago and before my airbrush days.

On my front here are a few pics of the decal job. I am still trying to find a sutable squadron or group badge. I may go with the kit decals.

Its getting there and a glosscoat and wash is up next.

I had almost forgotten about the white band on the cowl. Mine is suppose to be as far back as yours but trying to mask reverse doesnt work out so well. I would have more spots done if If not for painting the cowl and prop hub today. 

Sean and Steve great work on both models. Going to add the decals to the other side of my Re 2000 tonight after I wrestle with my spinner decal on the 109. Whish me luck. I'm going to need it!

Steve, your 202 is looking great.  Those decals really do the job.

Yep, used to play full time until she went back to school to get her education degree to teach music in the schools.  And yes, she is a cultured snob but she doesn't mind slumming with the likes of me once in awhile.

 Wow Sean and Steve! Those are some sharp looking fighters! Well done on the painting! They are excellent examples of some of the contrasting schemes the Italians had!

Woke up just in time to go to work ! so didn't get too much done. A little painting some touch ups and the white stripe reversed mask and painted. ( seems like we are all doing it that way) Still have a little yellow overspray on the engine to undo. Lazy masking.

Futured her up for decaling and see what happens tomorrow. On the Curiosity side I have heard several times that old yellowed decals can be un yellowed by the sun. The Smer ones in this kit were quite old and yellow. Although not being used for the model I figured would make a good experiment.

Always wanted to give that a try and since  The sun shines here I stuck it up in the window to forget about for a week.  Anxious to see the result.

 May have jinxed myself as it has gone from 78 when I stuck em in the window to maybe 30's tomorrow?  ACK!

Aaron- That is a stunning Macchi, love the cowl!  Yellow looks just right to me.   Hope you survive that cold snap (what I wouldn't give for a day in the 30's!).  

Question for you guys...

I found a profile of the aircraft I am modeling over at Wings Palette, and it differs from the kit markings.  Mostly, the profile shows a squadron badge of some sorts behind the cockpit, but the Hasegawa instructions do not show it or include it.  Does anyone have any photos or other info on this aircraft?  TIA!

Finished with the decals on the Re 2000 tonight. Going to let them set good and give them a coat of Future tomorrow. After a dullcoat then I will attempt to mount the very fragile looking landing gear and fabricate the strut rods that support them. Here is what she looks like now.

Kind of boring except the red nose but my airbrush is not working correctly so I chose the safe route and went with the overall dark green over gray. I think it will look better once the dullcoat is applied. It does'nt look right all shiney in that dark green.

Aaron- that is the trick, I've done it alot as I really prefer the older kits, denial of my age I guess. It will take a couple of weeks, and if the decals shatter afterwards they were going to anyways- I know this too.

One word of caution- if the window collects condensation from the , um, heavy breathing that goes on in your house, move them or you'll have stained glass. LOL but true, trust me friend.

Okay, maybe its the painkillers they've got me on...maybe its the fact that I haven't been to sleep for more than an hour and a half at any given time since last Tuesday...

Either way, this thread is getting downright creepy!  Sean, I musta missed something...is there a reason why you're making a little plastic Italian voodoo doll of me?  Trust me pal, you wouldn't want me helpin' with anything the last week or so, let alone brush painting rorshach blobs on your bird!...I'm finally off the meds enough to be able to type...that's it.  They tell me that one day I will be able to stop taking this stuff, and then my coordination will go back up...then I'll lend a hand, get to work on my D.520, stop being a slacker...until then, I'll just be a bother to you all.  

I'm pretty strongly Italian...50%, give or take...part of the reason why I like these planes so much...now, I know I've been out of it the last few days, but why is Bondo feeling us Italians up?!?

I think the purple strike looks...majestic...Caesar's toga and all that...do it Aaron!

Dave, my oral surgeron says to tell you that she took a look at my holes...my recovery is going slower than normal, and its all your fault!

SC, its looking really nice and your right, it will look better with the dullcoat on it. Im really liking the red nose on it. I have never seen an Italian bird with a red ose.

Aaron, that is exactly what I had to do with my decal sheet. Mine were in the window about three weeks and it definetly brought the white back to them. They were a terrible yellow tint. I dont know if its part of the process but some of them had cracks running across them after. I was luck and only one shattered when it hit the model. I aint tellin which one so you guys dont go looking too close to find it.

I put the kit decals on tonight for the squadron markings and then a panel wash. So, so results.

Oh man, i got up late today so no real time to look at anything. This is a post and dash Sorry kids. rom wat i did see though, it looks like we have several 'Almost dones' and someone made thier kid sick. We all know who to blame for that one. Aaron, im liking the idea of decals on the window but really, stick em on the plane.

Thanks Steve. I have to seal up the decals under some future then I can put down my dullcoat. It should lighten up the green a bit also. I have never seen and photos of any red nosed Regia Aeronautica aircraft either but the decal sheet I bought had options for two different red nosed birds. Both from the 377 Squadreglia. It also had markings for a black nosed bird and several yellow nosed versions too. I did the red one because I had never seen one done before. I always like to do things a little different.

Guy hope you get some bench time soon. Someone has to keep MacNeil in line. He has everyone putting decals on windows now?! Although he will probally blame Dave for it!

Arron - sticking decals to the window, I would try that but the "Ice Scraper" is in the truck my Wife has at work. 

And my update - I have been using the Supermodel "Dry Transfers" to add markings.  How sweet they are ! No decal film to silver. Got one side done and dullcoated. Waiting for it to dry to do the other. In the meantime I grabbed a "Hairy Stick" and have been painting the canopy frames.

I only ran over a couple of the old dodders today, which isnt too bad now we have lowered the bumpers. They just spit off into the kerb.

Guy did they lower the bumpers specificly for your bus or for all the others also? Thats why I love playing Grand Theft Auto on my PS3. There is nothing more satisfying than driving up on the sidewalk at high speed and sending bodies flying through the air after an agravating day at work. Great stress relief.  If a car in the game is in my way I just toss a grenade underneather it and drive off! Works like a charm!

Wow Sean that is a sharp looking little fighter!  I agree that is refreshing to see a wheels up display and the prop blur? How'd you do that? Open the door and let the wind blow in? Blow Dryer?  Amazing! I can't see you puffing away while you take the pic unless your really coordinated!

 Frank, no joy on the 109. Most I could find was that badge and some unit stuff and it wasn't about 109's oddly. I found the badge at that Stormo link you posted a while back.

Guy I am with you in dismal lack of free time at the moment. Post and run is the color of the last few days. I get a little done and set her aside to dry. Again I am having the decal issues with the roundrals. So much clear carrier. I really futured her up this time. Very shiny but even after appling pressure with a warm damp cotton cloth, the raised details still create bubbles and sivering. ( used Hasegawa decals this time, same result) Same cure as well applied some solveset full strength and with a new sharp knife stabbed a bunch of micro holes in the bubbles to let air escape. I let the decals dry first before doing that and they hold up fine. A final shot of solvested to smooth things over and the finally snuggle down enough to be acceptable. That 5 step process takes a lot of time though. Per decal.

Haven't seen any condensation on my windows that I can recall. The temp here isn't too bad went down to 39 but the sun was shining bright again today. Those decals should fade quick.

After everything drys just have to add the windscreen, guns and little stuff and she should be ready to fly!  It is really turning out quite nice for what I started with!  Sean inspired me withy his great looking bird up there. Get one of the oldys looking good gives a great sense of accomplishment!

Who all is about done?  Sean, Steve, Dave and I'll say Guy cuz he will be I don't know what is in that tea but I want some!

 HK, Bondo, and Alex are awaiting kits.

Frank is propeller prepping.
