Hey

     Stik

Been looking for a GB to join. If this one is still open I'd like in. Not sure what model yet. I would like to do Tamiya 1/700 IJN Suzuya but she did not see direct action during the campaign although she was in the area for a long while.

BTW, I noticed you need help with the badge so how about this:

Thanks

Scott

I just wanted to post an update on my build. I started the pit on my Kate. I was going to try to do an OOB but lost my nerve and decided to add the Eduard photo etch set. I will post pics as soon as I get some paint down.

BTW you guys haeve supplied some very good info on the F4F's and their markings. Good job!

Silentmodeler, the list has been updated with your F4F. I am looking forward to seeing your work here! My apologies for not adding you sooner. Thanks for the reminder.

As for me, my Yugumo is on hold for now until the PE set I ordered comes in to a LHS. Hopefully it will be in soon.

Note that the US Insignia on the fuselage was still over-sized and was on both wings, top & bottom, as well..

During the entire Guadalcanal campaign, the standrd paint scheme on Navy/Marine Corps aircraft was Non Specular Blue Gray over Non Specular Light Gray.

Hans Von Hammer thanks for posting that picture Looks like I will have to do some serious work on my weathering for this build. Do you know were the Wildcats Med Sea Blue over light grey or white ? Doesnt look like a 3 tone in this picture. I picked up my Tamiya kit the other day and have been afraid to open it up, wanna finish the P-38 first as I am having trouble keeping it going.

okay i found one  whew.  will be doing the F4F-4 Wildcat flew by Captain Marion E Carl on Sept 42 in 1/32 scale from Revell.

also let me know how the aircraft looks like during the Guadalcanal Campaign,  fresh painted or heavy weathering.  ill research some more abt wildcats during the battle.  Im not sure if his wildcat was involved during the battle of midway then brought it to Guadalcanal as well.

GSP, you are more than welcome here! I have updated the list and added your Kate. Zuikaku's air wing is a great choice. She was at both Santa Cruz and Eatern Solomons carrier battles during the Guadalcanal Campaign.

Could you guys use another member? I have never participated in a group build before and am wondering if the limited time frame will help me from getting "mired in the details" and get something done for a change. I was thinking of doing Hasegawa's 1/48 B5N2 Kate from the Zuikaku which I think participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.

Stikpusher Your build is coming along nicely I have been checking in on it ya know. I figured I would treat myself and build a Tamiya kit for this group, only my second one the first was a Zero. Anyway I ordered it today and will have it sometime next week. Oh Stikpusher my F4F-4 will be in 1/48 scale.

Stikpusher - I am Impressed by all the  progress on the Yugumo you have made. Approve [^] Thumbs Up [tup]

While I was on Vacation I spent a lot of time looking through a chest of pics my Dad has from his Naval Career . Lots of good reference pics of the BB-56.  I will post this one even though it is not much of a reference - but Interesting.

Photobucket I like all the sailors atop the 16" barrels

Marion Carl is perfect. I love that old Revell kit! Just a SWAG, but most likely his F4F at Guadalcanal was a fairly new build. Most of the surviving ones that fought at Midway were pretty beat up in their one combat (new pilots against the most seasoned fighter pilots in the Pacific). If you run the Bureau Number on a web search you will may be able to come up with some info on that particular aircraft. Conditions on Guadalcanal were harsh (dust, heat,  strong sunlight, 100+ inches of annual rainfall, minmal support and heavy Japanese harassment) so some weathering would be in order depending on at what stage you want to depict his bird.

A few update pics...

All the superstructures and weapons are only placed for the photos, not glued down.

OK silent... I know there are lots of candidates out there from the navies involved.

I got some painting done on my Yugumo today. I painted Tamiya Hull Red on the lower hull and Linoleum Brown on the main decks. I will now have to mask the brown deck areas off and spray the Dark Gray color.

Unfortuantely the nachi does not qualify. She was serving in the North Pacific for the entire period of the Guadalcanal Campaign.

The list is updated with your Wildcat. I know Three Guys had a Cactus F4F or two on their "first team" decal sheet in 1/48. I think there are a few others out there as well...

Stikpusher can you sign me up for a Tamiya F4F-4 Wildcat of the Cactus Airforce ? We can have it fly cover for Hans Von Hammers P-400 Big Smile [:D] I watched History Channels Dog Fights for Guadalcanel this afternoon and made up my mind. Hope I can find the decals for it. I should be able to start the build next month, hopefully.

Here are the first shots of her so far...

first up, all the gun and torpedo mounts. I thinned the side walls of the 25mm mounts, drilled out the ends of the 5" guns, and drilled out the aft ends of the torpedo tubes. I also thinned out the forward ends of the torpedo tubes.

next are all superstructure pieces built so far next to the upper hull. I thinned down side bulkheads on all the structures and AA gun platforms. A also had to modify the decks of thsoe platforms so they would fit properly against the stacks.

Next is all the parts next to the upper and lower hull halves.

upper and lower hull halves with all superstructure items placed (not glued).

close up of the bow, forward 5" turret, bridge, and forward twin 25mm mount.

Stern, after 5" turrets, and aft torpedo launcher.

Midships with raised AA platforms, 25mm triple mounts placed, smokestacks, and fore and aft torpedo launcher mounts. I had to drill new holes in the deck for the after raised AA platform because as molded on the kit, they fouled the traverse of the forward torpedo launcher. I also had to move the forward mount slightly forward for the same reason.

Thanks for looking.

BTW, this kit is stamped 1968...Shock [:O]
