Murray, Looks great!

Don't drop that turret Sherm! I can NOT believe your wife wouldn't let you have that Sexton. Hmpf. (niether would mine).

Wow. Glued my upper and lower hull together today... Maybe I'll get this thing done sometime this century!

Oh, one other question: I'm thinking of propping the engine compartment hatch open, but I'm not really sure how it's supposed to look? I think it just opens from the middle, but I was hoping someone might have some pics of how it generally looks opened up?

Thanks

Robert and Trevor,

Thanks for your kind words. I'm hoping I'll get a little more work done on it tonight. I'd like to do some subtle highlighting and possibly get the tracks on! Oh, and 'wingy-thingy' builder might be pushing it a bit. Truth be told, most of my builds so far of of the 'auto' variety ("...oh, the humanity!...") I was getting a little frustrated with my builds and not really happy with the end results. I've been 'mixing-it-up' a bit over the past year to 'hone' my skills a bit more and also just to try something different. I have to admit that the armor stuff is really interesting, but I'm quite certain that I'll continue to bounce around from subject to subject. (I guess I'm a bit of a 'nomad', wandering in and out of various subjects -- THANKS for the warm welcome and advice while I've been in your town!!) I've got a few 'favorites' in the stash that I'm saving for when I'm confident I can do a good job.

Here's a side question: anyone born on Feb 29th? Looks like a couple of friends of mine might have their next baby tomorrow!!

Looking great Murray !!

Nothing excessive about your interior weathering at all, been inside a Sherman ..... ain't much of anything clean in there !!!!!

For a wingy thingy builder you adapting to this dirty it all up stuff really good.
We'll make a convert out of you yet.

Excellent work so far guys. I'm really enjoying this build!

Here's an update on mine. (1/72 Italeri kit...) First an overall shot that gives you an idea where I'm at (BTW, sorry the pics aren't that great, I snapped them off pretty quick and didn't realize until I got them on the computer...). I've painted the olive drab and couldn't wait to try out Domi's weathering technique. So, I waited about an hour for the paint to dry and then mixed up some water colors and gave it a whirl (ignoring all of my own previous advice about thoroughly letting paint dry, etc, etc, etc...) If you look close, you should be able to see some 'streaking' I did on the side of the hull. I'm actually pretty happy with this and likely wouldn't ever be able to duplicate it again. It was more of a mistake than anything because I forgot to add the 'vinegar' to the wash and ended up getting some 'harder' edges to the wash than I really wanted. Knowing it was water color, I just took a damp brush, and feathered any of the edges I didn't like. The result ended up looking good to my eye. Let me know what you think??

Another shot of the other side of the hull that you may be able to see the streaking a little better.

An overall view to show you what's under the hull (not as much detail as frosty's kit, but I'm OK with that....) Probably a little excess weathering, but it was kinda fun!!

A closer look at the engine.

Thanks for letting me share!! For a guy who hasn't really built any armor before (I built a 1/72 Crusader once and it didn't turn out very good), I'm having lots of fun with this.

Great work Frosty and Latch. One a Braille scale miracle, the other something that looks like it belongs on Dr Who.

I'm cursing and swearing over the replacment rounds for the Achilles. Should be finished doing these in the next few days and then on to painting the outside of the vehicle and turret.

Robert & Ron:
those r the thingies i was talking about...
now that i know they r fuel tanks, it makes sense that they'd b as deep as possible.

Absolutely! As a matter of fact, the headlights were removable by loosening a nut inside for either quick replacement or for stowage inside during battle (I've seen mostly mounted headlights on Shermans in combat so that wasn't too common a practice to remove them)

Robert,, Thanks for the feedback. Like I said I didn't think it could have been anything different but wanted to check first. I also found in one of my books about using string with elmers white glue. Of course I found it not to long after I posted the question. Oh well this has deffinately been a learning experience.

Tim - glue a couple of stubs of plastic to the hull, knock the light off and call it minor battle damage. You have no idea how pics I've seen of Shermans missing these pieces. If you go with PE, you'll end up replacing the other ones too, very different looking animals.

Frosty - I think Ron has nailed it, can't think of any other trapezoidal thingies in the engine compartment. But just to be sure, are they located directly beneath the fuel filler caps on the upper hull ?

Tim: familiar story. If you combed the carpet in my house you could open a hobby shop.

Frosty: I believe you're referring to the vertical fuel tanks. White in color. They go from just below the back deck (so the 'guy' can reach the fuel filler caps) all the way to the sludged up bottom of the engine comparment (think of my friend's SoHo apartment).

Teaches me a lesson about "leaving well enough alone". I was just trying to make it look a little better, and since my hands are bigger than my brain... Well we're all familar with this story, aren't we?

guys, I said aren't we??

guys???

Tim: The Eduard Zoom set (Catalogue #: TP028) has them (that is about all that is in the zoom set). The set is < $5.00 so you might need to order more to justify shipping. Big Smile [:D]

http://www.eduard.cz/ go to products, photoetched ZOOM, AFV, they are the last item on page 8. Most of the online hobby shops should have them but Squadron doesn't.

re: trapezoidal thingies inside engine compartment ...
i think these r air filters or something; they butt up against the crew compartment wall. how deep r they, & what color should they b ?
(i'm thinking a greyish brown)
thanx in advance !

I thought about scratchbuilding, but there are so many complex/compound curves, I dodn't know if I could make one look right. Does anyone make a P/E set that has this piece in it?
