Asykr - looking good so far on your Marine Sherman.
The tracks that come with that kit are the steel chevron (I think). This is the method that I use for that style of track. First paint the entire track with gunmetal. Next drybrush it with rust followed by a drybrushing of steel to highlight. Then I burnish the entire track with graphite (pencil lead) by dipping my finger into the graphite and then rubbing it on the track. Further weathering can be done with pastel chalks to match the vehicle.

Feldgrau23 - welcome aboard. Please confirm your kit choice for me though so that I can upgrade the build site. Are you talking the Tamiya Early M4 or the Tamiya M4A3 (not late).

Ga.modler - glad to here they're in your possession . Hope you're feeling better soon.

Ron - EXCUSES, EXCUSES

Asykr: It looks great. Not so often do we see Shermans in more than one color. You are almost done as I can see.

Well as for me I am little delayed but I promised myself to get it all done (God willing) by Sunday. Hope I can do it. I am a little worried about how to weather the thing. I cannot use my "soaked in the rain" look as M-51s are desert creatures. The only model I had weathered assuming desert conditions is my M1A1 and I don't know if it will look good on the M-51.

Well, just gotta try it I think. Afterall I can always repaint it if it didn't turn-out all right.

Shermanfreak,,,, The Tamiya M4A3 Late Production 75MM Gun. I said the Early version at first but after rereading the Instructions relized I goofed and made a mistake. Either way I think I am going to build it anyhow. The first sherman I built I entered in a Modeling contest and Got an Hon. Mention. If only I had know how to weather back then,, I coulda been a contenda.

Dwight - quit fretting !!!! You'll do great as always.

Rich - Thanks for letting me know, had me slightly confused for a second there (was worried Tamiya slipped one past me). I'll update the site tonight and add your page.

I've now got all the tracks cleaned up. Ready to start building the runs.

Just a little more work on the body and it will be ready for the suspension and "fiddly bits".

The Group Build site has been updated. Rich (feldgrau23) has been added.

Just a reminder for those who have been around right from the start, and some info for the new members who have recently joined.

Finished pics can be submitted to me by e-mail to ShermanGroup@shaw.ca
Please keep this to a maximum of 5 pics.

In progress pics can be shown here on the site through the normal pic hosting sites that you use.

The site for the Group Build is at www.members.shaw.ca/ShermanGroup

This site address and the e-mail address are always in my sigtag so if you haven't got them bookmarked in your favorites, you can always find them on one of my posts.

Hope everyone's having as much fun with this build as I am !!!!

Don't seem to be making much progress. May be going a bit overboard tyring to show a well used 'ROO. Pics are of front and rear 'cause I've not done anything with the tracks yet, don't want to do mud, more of a breakout, fast moving road wear and tear.

thanx 4 ur vote of confidence...Blush [:I]Blush [:I]Blush [:I]
the intricacy of the fittings on the M32 is a quantum leap from the mostly simple flat planes of the ersatz, i think.
if i can make this look ok, i'll be really happy !

i picked up a package of 4 small turned aluminum pulleys, they're made 4 auto detailing in 1/24, but there was 1 that looked like it mite b rite 4 the lifting rig.

painted roadwheel rubber, continued cleaning flash from suspension...

jeffl is almost finished, wow !

Frosty,

Work big to small... Larger forms first, then add details. I know you'll do fine if you do that and break things into managable bits to work on. IF you do get stuck, just post it on the site and you'll get lots of answers!

Jeffl! Looking good!

Bob3242, You're feeling behind?? I'm still working on my tranny! [:0]

M1Abrams, I wish I'd have taken more shots in the Patton Museum's M10, but was kind of distracted (had finicky Stuart to drive that day). Do you have, or can you get (from a library) a copy of Hunnicutt's book? I think there are some good shots in there.
What exactly did you want to detail more? Perhaps we could help in specifics.

Frosty,

Scratchbuilding isn't tough if you break it down into its forms.
Spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones. Everything else is gravy off that.
i.e. look at your hand. A rectangle for the palm, spheres for the knuckles & joints, cylinders for the fingers.
Think in shapes not detail and the detail will come naturaly.
You already have a good foundation for what you're doing (I bring to example your ersatz build) but I think you're stressing out needlessly on this one. Even if you make a mistake or aren't real comfortable with your result, its still a step in the right direction.

I found an article from a Military Modeling compilation book I bought back in 1974, of a build that Steve Zaloga did. If you look at his stuff now and look at the build he did then....................night and day. So....baby steps and you'll do fine. Its only plastic and what else do we do this for?

Abrams - exterior colour
Back to the interior for a minute .... driver's compartment or fighting compartment.

I started work on the individual tracks. You are right Robert, they aren't as bad as I thought... after snapping off guides halfway around the room, I settled down and commenced to building.

I was working on the tracks last night. I got a couple of runs done and was pleased to fine out that it went together a little easier than expected. I'm using RHPS' track links and it's nice because they're a press fit making it semi-workable. This mean that you can get it around the drive sprocket and idler before gluing it. I think the hardest part is making sure all the track blocks are facing the right way.
Trevor Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?

RAF120,

Which RHPS's track links have you got?

I got one of the first T51's and every link has two sink holes to fill. One on the top and one on the bottom.

jeffl:
LOL ! just think of it as additional weathering ! Wink [;)]

Ron & Mike:
thanx 4 the advice, it's always welcome !
i'm actually feeling a bit better about it now...
took a couple of deep breaths 2 calm myself down
& a couple of days off 2 work on some structures 4 model rr projects. Big Smile [:D]

last nite i did a bit more work:
- painted the driver's compartment & turret floor white
- cleaned more flash from suspension units
trying 2 decide just how detailed i want interior 2 b...
i'll probably just do a little work on the inside (famous last words)
'cause the outside is going 2 keep me busy.

this weekend: more work on lifting rig (a-frames)
