I was kinda thinkin "fantasy" type, 'round the world type race. How the rules of such a race would go, I dunno, maybe some sort of handicap would be in order. Anyway, what I was looking at doing would be one of; F-104(1/48) ,Mig-15(1/32), F-4(1/48) aint decided. But if the rules stay as they are, a pair of 1/48 Mustangs will suit me fine. I'm not mad.

Oh wait! What about a 262!!!    SSSSSHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW

Fermis, I probably won't get to any of those I mentioned. I am a very slow builder and have other projects going. If I do put one in the build it will strictly be OOB, so I might can have a chance of getting it finised in this millenium!Wink [;)] Remembered I also have the OLD Airfix DeHavilland DH.88 Comet. A DC-3 was even entered in the England-Australia race. They even had a DC-7 rounding the pylons at Reno one year! Possibilities are endless!!

Fermis Hey come to think of it a 262 would work I dont ( not a 262 guy here ) think the wings were swept back much if at all and hey didnt have afterburners on it.

I am however quite intregued by your idea, maybe we could do like a sectioned build. The second one being for "WHAT IF" Ulimate Unlimited racers. What if jets were raced on say a 150 mile closed course, Reno style.  Would be too cool seeing a 104 or F-16 in race colors dothcha think. Give me some input guys.

I'd be in, got a nice red T-6 I can build.  Can't remember which racer but kit is Monogram 1/48.  I'll check and update tonight when I'm home.

Randy,

I hate you for posting that site.  I had forgotten about that site, seeing it now has me pondering the possibility of doing a history of Race #5.  That means either a whole lot of scratchbuilding or a whole lot of High Planes kits, which is basically the same thing.   With regards to the rules thingy, someone asked about doing an ME-262, I would think that would be perfect in the what if category jmho.

For those of you who don't want to do a Mustang, try www.redpegasusdecals.com and see if they've got something more to your liking.  For kits try www.hiplanes.com  They're kinda rough, but if scratchin ain't your thing, they're the only kits in town.  Is this a Reno only build, or are the seaplanes from the Schneider Cup allowed as well?

Hey Lewbud how ya doin ? Thanks for hating me but I just had to post that link ya know Big Smile [:D] My bad I guess. BTW thanks for posting the sites you did they will I am sure come in handy, cant have too meany sources or refferances ya know. As for the float planes yup they are included, they were after all raced. My referance to Reno was ment because they are allowing jets to race ( started that class in 2005 I believe) so I wanted to include those also. I do think the 262 would fit into that class and think it would be a neat build for a fantasy racer. Oh and dont forget the Red Bull racers either Big Smile [:D]  I didnt really intend a "What If" sorta thing but I found some of the ideas rather intreging, someone wanted to do a turboprop F-82, or an F-104, maybe an F-16 racer, and some others that would look great in race colors. I have been thinking of doing a second catagory that would allow these builds and I think I will do that. I am trying to set things up so I dont exclude any builds and have been asking for feedback. Thank you for yours.

So come on guys if you still want to have What Ifs in the group let me know and it will happen.

Okay, found the kit.  The Revell 1/48 "Miss Behavin" T-6 Reno Air Racer.  I looked for pic of the real plane but no luck and only found one built kit so this must either be sitting on collectors shelves or built with other markings.

Idea for badge photo, just add text.

Its a modeling refferance page but does have some good pictures of Miss Behavin heres the link. Hope it helps out.

A 1/32 Trumpeter Rare Bear... now that, I gotta see. Awesome idea!

I'm in with an Accurate Miniatures A-36 as a post-war Bendix Trophy racer. Race #2 in 1949 with white wings and NMF fuselage and green trim. I also have a Verlinden engine I may bust out for this build.

I'll add a vote of confidence in Keith at Red Pegasus Decals, I've ordered stuff from him a few times. He's very helpful and the decals are great - just be aware that they're ALPS printed. He's even printed a sheet for me that was OOP and not listed in his site anymore; I just sent him an email he got it to me in about a week. Great guy.

At this point, with the build starting in a couple of weeks, should we get an "official" thread started in the Group Builds area? Just a thought.

Jonny Roscoe,

Here's some pics you and anyone else who cares to look at them, might find interesting.  They were taken in Feb this year at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to see her fly in or out.

Now that's a purdy air plane!  lewbud, what part of the metroplex are you from?  All my family is in DFW except me.  I was going to order the decals for this plane for a Sea Fury kit I have but not for the GB.  Maybe later.  Sept. 1 needs to hurry, I'm ready to start.

*whistle*  That's one nice Airplane!

A little input on the subject of fighter jets as air racers:  absolutely! I think it would be awesome to have an "Extreme Racers" category for the high-preformance craft.

BTW, anybody thinking of a Dornier or Me-163 for this build?  The 163 could be a can of worms...

The only thing I couldnt get was the engine. If anyone wants the pics just PM me and Ill se what I can put together.

kg4kpg,

I live in Arlington.  If you can manage it, the local CAF wing and the Cold War Air Museum are  holding a fly-in on 5 September and the Alliance show is in October.

Would a pre-painted die cast 1/32 scale kit of the Wedell Williams Gilmore Red Lion racer be ok?

I dont think that would work Tom. I think what randy wants is a pure models. Diecast is easy, you just put it snap it together, unless you are wanting to HIGHLY modifly it and paint it in diff colors, seen it done before.

Randy,

Take a look at this banner maybe more suitable quality wise....

Hey guys sorry I haven't been around in a couple of days. I had some family matters that needed to be taken care of.

Kg4kpg Hey guy dont get in too much of a hurry the start date is opening day of the Reno Air Races 2009 the 16th of September. Dont want ya jumpin the gun ya know. However if ya just cant wait and gotta watch the 40% partical build rule Big Smile [:D]. But dont post WIP pictures before the 16th.

Red13bar thanks for your input and the title of the new Air Racer Category "Extreme Racers". I have been trying to come up with a catchy name for it for a couple of days now but think yours is perfect.

T_Terrific I am sorry but I dont think a die cast model would work here unless you were planning on doing a lot of work on it, scratch building, painting and such. That way it could be called a multimedia kit bash. If thats what you have in mind let me know and we will see if it will work.

Jonny Roscoe Thanks for the badge idea. I want to try and offer maybe 4 badges for builders to choose from.

So its offical we will have an "EXTREME AIR RACER" Category, should be quite interesting. Thanks to those who planted this idea, and I promise to keep the rules simple Big Smile [:D],

I will be getting the roster together over the next couple of days and getting the categories setup. Thought I would leave the thread in aircraft for another week to give more people a chance to see it and maybe join up. This ones gonna be a fun group I think.
