Thanks Simpilot but as far as racing the Eagle Smile this F-5 is a race plane and does have the super secret Acme Race engines in it. They even keep the model number of the motor a secret. Oh and I do have a special pilot and ground crew too, however I cant reviel who they are just yet,  might give Doc Fermis the advantage if I do. Cowboy

My spies are really good there, Cowboy!!!!!

Have some update pics of the new paint scheme.

After sanding smooth and fresh Testors white base coat , I masked the new pattern with low tack 3M blue tape. Then shot the blue pearl.

A couple days drying then mask off the blue and shoot the yellow pearl.

Final pic is current stage of progress.

Adding a thin stripe off dark red to bring the graphics to life. Also note the name and number decals.

First printed on clear decal paper , then given a coat of Testors orange, then Testors neon orange. Finally outlining with extrafine tip black Sharpie. Those are great pens and can be found in a number of colors. Even found a huge multi-color pack ( 34 I think) at my local staples.

I think this paint scheme better fits the name Tantrum than the previous one. Definately an aircraft easy to spot ,even on the backstretch at Reno.

The prop blades are coming along as I've waiting for paint to dry. I will post a how to ( or how I did it) when I get them finished.

Great paint work Howard! I'm a sucker for pinstripes and I think it really sets the two colors off... nice.

You're using sharpie over the decals? It stays on well enough when you apply the decals? Neat idea.

Glad you guys like the new paint . The original scheme was too swoopy for the name Tantrum. This one's jagged, more attention getting , much like a kid's tantrum might be. Got the idea while going over my daughters drawings of her feelings when she's having a tantrum. Many jagged ,sharp angles ,almost explosive looking.

Jeremy- The thin red strips really do add depth. Even though they are very thin , you can see the difference where I stopped on the wing. Flames espesially need a thin outlining stripe to add depth and bring them to life. Always bothers me when I see a beautiful street rod with some great flames , except they look flat without that outline.

The sharpies work great . They're a permanant marker but I still overcoat with gloss or flat dullcoat. Experiment on some scrap to get the feel . I find light pressure works best for me.

Another striping trick I learned from Scale Auto years ago was the use of a quill pen and india ink. Another tool requireing some practice but very useful .

Yes I remember that article as well Howard. Will have to go to an artsupply place here and see if I can find some opaque colored inks and experiment!

Daddy1 a HUGE Ditto to all that has been said above !! Those red strips really do make the design pop. Hand painting stripes like that is a real art I think Bow Down

I got the base color on the F-5 today, the mancave finally cooled down from 110 for the past week and a half  to a cool 93 degrees. I will post a pic or two in the morning.

Well after seeing Daddy1's TANTRUM and feeling totally inadequate, here is a WIP of my build. Got the base color on yesterday and futured it this morning, it needs a bit of wet sanding then on to the fun and games masking the beast.

I am hoping I can pull this one off Stick out tongue

I've been watching you guy build out in email land and you guys have done some outstanding work!  Just realized that the build is coming to an end and I haven't even started yet (those who know me would say what's new.).  Randy, could you switch me from the Eduard L-39 to a High Planes RB-51?  Howard, looking at your build has me wondering what a F-82 based Pond racer would look like (Getting an evil thought for the upcoming Weekend GB).

Lewbud no problem on your build change, will that be a 1/48 or 1/72 scale. I will update the front page this evening.

Also I am thinking maybe I should extend the end date a bit. If I remember right Bish had a build going when he was deployed overseas and it seems the builds going now will be cutting it to the wire pretty close, so let me know what you guys think.

Randy- Looking good on the paintYes . Is that the Boyds yellow pearl? A very beautiful color. Almost seems to glow in bright light. Can't wait to see the rest of the paint scheme. Great color to contrast with.

BTW, put me down as a vote for a bit of extension. Been wanting to shoot some Testors glosscoat after work the past few days, but our afternoon T-storms here in central Florida keeps a hold on that. Even rained out a Jonas Brothers concert yesterday. Had a bunch of very disappointed teenage girls in Tampa. I'll try to clearcoat  again tomorrow after work. Still aiming at the 19th as a deadline.

In the meantime , I've 10 custom scimitar prop blades to finish up and 24 exhaust stacks to cut and assemble.

Lewbud-One can only imagine what you've  got in mind for a weekend build , F-82 based Pond racer. Sounds intresting .  Will be watching for it.

I think we will extend the build some so no worries guys maybe to the end of the month then more if its needed.

Daddy1 the yellow is just plain ole Tamiya yellow. I haven't shot enamels yet and have to find out how much to thin them for my air brush. I have been using acrylics exclusively, however I find I cant get all the colors I need for some builds in acrylic, and I will need to use an enamel paint on this build. So if anyone can give me a good starting point it would be helpful. I have Testors enamels and I also picked up some of their thinner too.

I finally got a stencil cut out lastnight that I am happy with, and have a few others to figure out, then it will be painting time. I do have them and the model under lock and key so Doc Fermis's spies cant get to them Stick out tongue Anyway there will only be 3 decals used on this build, the rest will be painted on. An ambitious paint job for me so I hope I can pull it off. This group has really pushed me to improve my airbrush skills I will tell ya, gotta keep up with the big dawgs ya know.  I will post some how I dun it pictures if it comes out well.

Thanks for the extension ,Randy. I can breath a little easier now.

Here's a couple pics of Tantrum sponsored up. I've found with some of the decals printed on white paper, it's easier to trim close to the image and touch up around the edges with matching paint and a fine tip brush. Look on the insides of the tail fins and you'll see the effect in progress . The little twin Mustangs still need another thin coat of blue pearl around the edges.

Next comes a few coats of glosscoat, some rubbing out and polish.

Couldn't do it, nope, couldn't trash the F-5 so, I will post a WIP instead. Finally got the masking to where I liked it and shot the second color today.

It will now be Race # 23 due to it being baby sisters lucky number and my old race #. Of course she didn't insist nor did she beat me over the head with a 2 X 4 Indifferent It is still a ways from being close to finished but it is getting closer.

Nice work on the flamesBow Down. Love the color contrastToast.

I also love your inspiration for the race number. Tantrum and Magic's N numbers are our birthdates and the race numbers are our birth year. Going with some sort of personal connection like that really makes it feel like your racer, your airplane. Truly one of a kind models.

Thanks Daddy1 no where as nice as yours but it will do. I have been thinking you should submit both your builds for the readers gallery or even better an article in FSM.

Scorpiomikey would have enjoyed having your build in the group. I was not planning on a rerun of this group, and wouldn't mind if someone wanted host round 2. Hosting 3 groups at a time is a bit much for me.

Guys thought you might like this little news tidbit from Reno, some unusual and rare aircraft will be racing this year. Wish I could be there, but will have to see if I can find the races online again this year. Anyway here ya go

The Unlimited Class generally offers the fastest racing, and this year 26 pilots will compete. The airplanes in that class include 12 P-51D Mustangs, a rare P-51A, three Hawker Sea Furies, two Yak 3s, two Grumman F7F Tigercats, and several other airplanes, including an ultra-rare German Fockewulf FW-190. The event also features a gathering of Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. "This is the largest gathering of P-38 aircraft since World War II, and it's happening right here in Reno," said Mike Houghton, CEO of the Reno Air Racing Association.

Will it run through next years Reno event? If so, count me in . I will build Williams Brothers 1/32 scale: Wedell-Williams Gilmore Special and Williams Bro.s 1/32 Hall's Bulldog.  I posted pics of the boxes back on page 42.

May take a little time to get to them as I've a couple other projects going in addition to Tantrum, but would love to have them in a 2010-2011 GB.
