Sorry for the delay in reply, fellas. Been having too much fun playing with the Windows paint program on my computer. A very usefull tool for printing decals.

Randy- The Travel Air looks sweeetYes. Great recovery on the mishap and I think the B/W pics are a nice touchCoolToast.

Had a similar unsuccessful test flight with 'Magic when she was at the primer stage.

Fortunately ,the wing broke off at the join seam , so it was just a matter of reattaching and a little light sanding along the seam. The tail wheel also broke off , but again , that will be a simple repair when adding the the last fiddly bits.

I have Little Miss Magic painted and sponsored up.

I came up with a way of printing text in white and other light colors ,then printing on white decal paper, without having to trim out every tiny letter.

I scanned a sample of background color. Then ,using the paint program, typed in the text with my color of choice.

Next , I pasted the background sample onto the page and using color edit , came up with a close match to the background color. Then drew a box around the text and color filled the box.

A little touch up around the appied decal to blend and topcoat clear. The technique could use some refinement ,but is quite effective .

Here are the pics. First up is close up before top coat of Future.

After topcoat and removal of masks. One of my favorite steps in a build. Like opening a present and seeing how the paint and interior details will look together.

Need to clean up/touch up the canopy frame in a few spots, as well as a couple other little touch ups.

Generally, all that's left is the landing gear, flaps, and antenna or two and Little Miss Magic is ready to race. Then, it's full bore on getting Tantrum complete.

 TTFN , Howard

Well guys it wasnt in me it seems to set the Travel Air aside so I stayed up late last night and got most of the rework done. Got up this morning and finished it, was very very careful not to get numb thumbs again. I tried using fishing line for rigging, didn't like it, then tried elastic thread, no good, to heavy looking. I had gotten my hands on a spool of .015 dia. beading wire a while back that I used on the Laird Solution but that looked a bit heavy also. The instructions called for .008 dia music wire, so with that in mind I decided to see if I could stretch the wire. I was able to get it down to .010 dia. I tried stretching it more but at .009 dia it broke, so I settled for .010 dia. As I have said earlier for me frisket paper is the way to go for a paint job like this one. I hope you all like the way it came out, I am pleased with it.

Had to take a B&W picture ya know

And one of my small herd of golden age racers.

Thanks for looking guys, this build was both fun and frustrating but worth it to me.

SurpriseOopsOh Randy I feel your pain!!!! I know that any concientious modeller that hears someone say that just cringes. Like the many pics you see of skatboarders riding rails and they land squarely between their legs on the rail. Glad to hear it wasn't too bad though, I'd need a drink after that LOL!!!

Guys finally got the rigging finished on the Travel Air.

However Bang Head Bang Head CensoredBang Head

While putting the engine cowl on, tragedy struck big time Crying I dropped the model on the floor. Yes I did give my big clumsy fingers a severe time out, coined a few new blue words too. Fortunately the paint wasn't hurt nor was the model its self, but I will have to re rig it.  I think I will set it aside for a few days then finish it up next week..

Thanks Jeaton01 and Daddy1 I can tell ya it sure feels good to have the painting finished, got the decals on and the final coat of future on her tonight. I think I will let it cure for a couple of days then tackle the rigging.

Howard I havent really decided what I am going to use for the rigging, I have .015 and .008 dia silver wire ans fishing line, I dont really think that will work well. So I guess I will have to do some searching around and play with it a bit.

Daddy1 your racer and your daughters racer are looking fantastic ! I saw a bottle of the Aluma Yellow Pearl at the LHS and picked it up just because I like the color. All I can say is the camera doesnt do the color justice, your paint jobs, me thinks will be mind blowing. Your decal sheet looks very good, too love the markings you have come up with. You are right about printing decals being a blast and not to mention it opens up a whole new world for you in modeling, if you dont have one make it, or, no one else has one but I do. Looking good ,RandyYes. I know the feeling about the tired eyes. I'm also dealing with old eyes syndrome. Nothing a magnifying visor can't help withWhistling. What do you plan on using for rigging in that scale. On my Williams Bro.s Gee Bees, I used florist wire. But they are 1/32 scale and that wire would be too heavy for your situation.

I've also got a couple racers in the paint shop currently, and have also discovered the fun of printing my own decals as well as learning how to use the paint program on my computer. Will have some interesting sponsors on   Tantrum and 'Magic.

 Now for some pics.

My very first printed decal sheet. I'll have to reprint some on white decal paper or back up some of these with some scrap white decals. I also don't plan on using every one on the racers. Just started having fun with what can be printed and stuck somewhere. Already have the group build logos applied to my work desk.

Tantrum ,all masked , awaiting paint.

First color on is Testors, Colors by Boyd , Aluma Yellow pearl.

Second color is Color by Boyd , True Blue pearl. Next ,I'll outline the yellow with a custom mix red/orange.

  Next up, Little Miss Magic.

First, on with the Color by Boyd, Ice Blue pearl.

Then the True Blue pearl as the team color.

Next ,I'll outline the Ice blue with Model Master ,Hot Magenta. You can see a little of that started already on the left side of the fuselage.

Here's a side by side of the Daddy 1 race team so far.

I get past the paint and decals , it's just the landing gear , maybe a little light weathering, and fiddly bits.

TTFN Howard

Thanks guys this build has had me on edge because of the paint job on such a small subject, but all the nervousness was for not in reality. The frisket paper worked out very very well for me, although there were a few places where it was challenging to get it to stick, some careful slicing and trimming took care of that with a bit of liquid masking here and there. So all but the cockpit was masked using frisket paper. Anyway its a small WIP picture this time, but it has been a huge step for me with this paint job so I have to show it off a bit.

Just a few small touch ups to do mount the engine and cowling and main wheels, decals then clear coat again. Then the next challenge, rigging this little puppy. My eyes hurt Tongue Tied

Nice work Randy! Yes  I bought some friskit paper a while back but have never put it to use. I need to try it out!

How do you plan on doing the stripes? That seems like it will be tough! Black Eye

Simpilot34 thank you sir, I hope it looks good when I finally get it finished Stick out tongue

Time for another small update of my build. The P-51 Miss America I did, and now this one have me a firm believer in frisket paper as a masking medium. The tiny little Travel Air, for me, would have been impossible to mask  with masking tape. You can see thru the frisket paper and it cuts easily and cleanly with a sharp knife. All I did was apply the paper then ran my hobby knife along the engraved paint lines and it worked out well. Took me some time though as these eyes get tired fast and my hands get a bit shakey. Anyway here are a few pictures.

I hope to get another gloss coat on it in the morning and mask it for the dark green stripes tomorrow evening.

Finally got back to my little build the Travel Air Mystery Ship, the red is on so now for the fun part. Masking for the black scalloped paint job.

I think the frisket paper will be perfect for this job as it worked so well on Miss America.

Jonny Roscoe I am both sad and a bit ticked off the pictures of all those aircraft are gone and no where to be found Angry a half dozen airshows pictures, even a few rides I took, all gone Crying. I did send off an email to Bill ( Tiger ) Destefini in hopes of getting some pictures for you.

I have a few WIP pictures for you guys, and a new build addition to the group. I hope it turns out as I picture it in my head.

The Travel Air is about ready for paint I just need to add the canopy and mask it.

The new build is the Testors F-5 Freedom Fighter that will be in the ultimate racer section, gotta give Fermis some competition ya know Stick out tongue

Daddy1 man I gotta tell ya I am just plain jealous of the great time you are spending with Emma, life time memories like these are just priceless. I can see she is doing a fine job too. Love all the custom painting that has been done on Miss Magic, me thinks she will be living up to her name. Bow Down to Emma and huge Toast to Howard you lucky Daddy, and a very lucky daughter.

Jonny Roscoe I havent forgotten you or the pictures I did find the box they should be in just haven't had time to go through it yet with illness and my sister visiting, haven't seen her in 5 years.
