Great work FastEagle!

I use Vallejo paint on figures with a brush but I've yet to try it to airbrush it so far.

Cheers everyone,

Before I talk about the -109, let me wish your World Cup teams good luck in the tournament (I hope to watch both matches tomorrow).

Okay, back to the subject at hand.  Using the airbrush, I applied Vallejo's Light Grey Green to the interior as a base coat and followed it with mix of 50% white + 50% base color to pick out the highlights and 30% black and 70% base coat in the shadow's and recesses.  The remaining details were picked out with a brush.  To complete the process, I applied a several coats of highly thinned acrylic paint to blend all the colors and soften the color transitions.  I wish my photography/ lighting skills were a bit more polished and conveyed more of what I see with the naked eye (I am working on this!).

As for the color itself, I agree that it looks "sandy" in my photographs.  I attribute this in part to the "warm" lighting I used to take the photo's but there is no denying that Vallejo's RLM 02 matches the color of the molded plastic very closely.   I erred in not adequately compensating for "scale effect" which, I believe, would have given the subject a grayer tone, one that matched my reference photo's a bit closer.

Sometimes one must enjoy a pint and contemplate these things.  I'm off to the 'fridge.

Many thanks for the kind feedback and observations.  I'm really enjoying the quality of the work on this GB!!

Great looking pit there FastEagle...really like the detail on the IP....very crisp and clean...one question though.....why the "sand" colored interior??? Just wondering...

Sorry FastEagle I had my little update in edit for so long this morning I missed seeing your post come through.

Great looking work on the cockpit particularly the shading and highlights they look great.  Btw did you mean that you used various lighter and darker shades of Vallejo 44 to obtain the weathered look?

Cheers

Not a prob Patton there's plenty of time in this build for finishing.

I actually pulled out the Spitfire last night as well as the Eduard zoom set I've got for it and discovered a little issue.  The fact that some of the PE is nicely colored green is great but the color bears no resemblence to the Model Master RAF Interior green that I use.  No biggy and at least I don't have to prime the parts.

Good evening everyone,

A quick update to pass along on the Eduard Bf-109E1.  So far the kit is going together quite well with no fit issues at all.  To the front office we go:

Here is the pilot's right-hand panel.  All colors are from Vallejo: Model Air #044 for the base color (tints and tones) and their Model Color line in other places.

and the left-hand side

It was at this point that I encountered a minor issue - I wanted to use the injection molded instrument panel as it allows me to maintain a consistent color (and weathering) composition within the cockpit and I prefer the three dimensional effect.  However, while the molded panel is accurate insofar as the placement of the instruments is concerned, the size of the bezels is understated to the point of being useless.  Ugh!  Scratch building a new panel would put me outside the time-limit of the GB so I opted for plan B:

This is the lower portion of the instrument panel rendered in Eduard's beautiful color photo-etch.  As a compromise I added T-handles to represent the landing gear retraction/ extension and emergency extension controls.

and another view from the top looking down:

My attempt to photograph the cockpit was futile; half of the subject was in focus while the other half was blurry, so I've elected to post a photo of it at a later point.

Thanks for checking us out and Happy Modeling!

Great work so far everbody. Special cudos to Suppressionfire on the medal and great paint job Gamera. That is one ofthe most realistic I have seen in a while.

I will be posting some pics early next week for my two builds. Iam in the middle of a 262 build for the Reich Defender II GB and up agianst the deadline on that one. But since mine are already started I will put some photos of the work to date.

Again keep up the good work and happy modeling!

SF: congrads on your well deserved gold!

Clebode: welcome to the GB, looking forward to seeing your one-oh-nine.

Carlos: Great looking 109.

BTW don't knock the shell till you try it. It keeps me cool in the summer, warm in the winter, dry when it's raining, and deflects some attacks.

And what city did you smash while you were gone?

Darson---Thanks for the warm welcome!  The PCM Ta152 is a limited run kit with some fit challenges.  I compounded the difficulties by incorporating a resin upgrade.  I haven't worked with resin much.  Like I said, I tend to get carried away at times!  Embarrassed

Julez---Good to see you are here too!

Great Clebode thanks and as Jules said, Welcome Sign to the build.

I've never built it but I gather the PCM Ta 152 is a bit challenging?

Darson--Thanks!!  I will build a Hasegawa 1:32 Bf 109 E.  It will be either the E 3 or E 4.  It will be OOB unless I get carried away, as I usually do.  LOL    This should be a more soothing build as compared to the PCM Ta152H-1 I chose for the Fw 190 GB.

Of course Clebode, there's no cut off date for entry and your 109 certainly qualifies.  Can you please let me know the scale and manufacturer of your kit and I'll add you to the roster.

Cheers

Darson,

May I still get in on this build?  I think I have a Bf 109 Emile on the shelf that qualifies.  This will be my second GB .

Carlos the only versions of the Ju 88 that saw active duty in the BoB were the A-1, A-5 & C-5.

Gam that's a wicked looking Spit you posted a couple of pages back, and the fantastic wheathering really sets it off.

Jules, Mike, Bob & Fasteagle great looking progress from all you guys

Hey all....took some time off from building.....but now Im getting back into it....before I get into my GB subject I am loosening up with the Tamiya corsair and Moto tug...just looks like a fun kit and have been wanting to do it for a while....anyway...checking back in and finding some real nice work .....

The "turtle's" Spitfire came out very very niceYes...not bad for a guy who walks around with a shell on his back!! Nice camo job and the weathering is right on...Bow Down

Mike....very nice looking 109..I like the camo scheme...I did one very similar to that a few years back...take a look....in fact I think we use the same decal sheet for reference...that particular scheme I had my eye on because I really liked the yellow gun troughs

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u3/carsanab/Me-109/10920side.jpg

Well back to the bench...I will start on my D0-17z soon...although I am also leaning towards a Ju-88a4 but dont have too much info on BoB schemes for an A4....any suggestions???

Glad to br back

Carlos

Carlos,

That's a great looking build, JG 54 really had some interesting schemes, they got even crazier during Barbarossa!

As far as paint schemes on bombers you're looking at RLM 70/71 schemes, no real variation other than unit badges although some units carried white stripes on the upper surfaces to aid in assembling the formation.

Also the Ju 88A-4 was not introduced until after the BoB, the A-1 was the primary variant used.  The differences aren't huge but they are noticeable, different prop blades, wing tips, engine nacelles and rear canopy section are the biggest differences.

ooo - all natural Spitfire coming up? Didn't realize there was such a thing in Canadian service... Navy or Air Force?

Here is the text that accompanied the picture I found:

'Enigma Bare-metal Spitfire'

'This photo was taken at a post-war air display in Toronto, Canada in August 1946. The bare-metal Spitfire Mk. 1a R7143 was something of a hybrid rather than "pure" Spitfire mark. R7143 was built in February 1941 as eight-gun Spitfire Mk. 1 with a Merlin III engine.

Various conversions and roll changes gave this plane a interesting history and the label hybrid. The last line of text states:

'Finally, it became the instructional airframe at RCN Air Electrical School and was reduced to scrap in 1949-50 by the school staff'CryingNoBang Head

The book 'Canadian Aircraft of WWII' by Carl Vincent has some great photographs of WWII airplanes stripped to bare-metal in various rolls post war 1946. Its also my reference for a FW-190 F-8 that became a Canadian pilots personal aircraft for a few flights when he found it abandoned in a field June 1945. Of course he painted over the German markings before flight. I will be tackling the Canadian FW-190 later on this year in the GB 'FW 190 Reich defender III'

Last weekend I entered the Luftwaffe pilot in a contest held in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was points format and 'Caen Airfield, France 1940' scored well enough to place gold in the figures category.

Excellent Group build!

I will use these pages as reference material once i get to building the Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire I picked up this week after about a 5 month wait for the LHS to order it in. It will be NMF as seen online pictured as a PR aircraft, Canada 1946. (Mk I hybrid w/o guns)

Wow, I step out for a few days and the forum explodes with coolness!

Spike- sorry to hear about your paint problems, if there's anything I hate it's doing sometime time consuming like painting the model and then having to go back and redo it. Good luck with this run.

Luft- fantastic AB job, I love the complex German paint schemes. Sorry about the canopy, I've come very close to doing the same thing a few times myself.

F.Eagle and Julez- great work! Looking forward to seeing more!

Your cockpit looks fantastic!  Really good work!

Gents - forgive me for the indulgence, but the work I've seen on this GB is just fantastic.
