Hello everyone,

I meant to get the cockpit photos before I enclosed the fuselage, but I forgot! Here is a WIP- the cockpit tub and gun deck in the fuselage. Has anyone had problems with the shell ejector part actually fitting into the lower wing section? There is no way that it will fit, they land right on toop of the main spar piece and I fear I will need to cut them off.

Thanks,

Rob

Rob, you Wurger is looking very impressive so far!

Well I finally settled upon some markings for mine, although I can not vouch for absolute accuracy. Sources conflict as to specific type, but with no photos to fall back on for my I am running with my choice- a FW-190A8/R1 of 6./JG-1, Yellow 4. As far as why an R1? Well the lower wing surfaces are molded on this kit (the old Otaki/ARII) where for the outboard cannons there are no bulges or ejection chutes that should be there. Also the barrel holes for the outbaord cannon are more properly located for a MG FF as on a pre A6 rather than the MG-151 equipped later variants.

Today I assembled the wings.

I also have made some dress up mods to the cockpit- I have a Eduard FW-190A5 that comes with PE parts for the instrument panel and side consoles in addition to the plastic parts. So the plastic is gonna dress up the very weak Otaki/ARII cockpit. I sanded smoothe the side consoles and replaced them with the Eduard parts. I also added the Eduard rudder pedals and replaced the kit seat with a True Details seat. I had to modify by sanding the tub and inner faces of the fusealge to fit the Eduard instrument panel parts. Here are a few shots...

And I have begun cleaning out the spent casing ejection chutes on the R1 cannon pods.

I will have some more progress pics one of these days...Whistling

Rob, that looks like the Eduard kit, I could tell by the way it made me shudder. LOL. It is a fantastic kit but you seriously have to watch every piece as you assemble. Looks like your on top of the beast though. Very nice looking pit,

Stick, great start. Cant wait to see an R1 mod,

It's 1/48. I do have a 1/32 190 in my stash but not much display room for it.

A bit more progress today. This kit has no engine included. Just a flat face at the front of the teh fuselage over which the cooling fan and propeller are mounted. This will not do! So I spent awhile reving that flat face from the armored cowl ring by sanding and scribing. Eventually I had a proper armored cowl ring and a nice hole up front. New problem, Tamiya to the rescue. I have a 190D-9 in my stash which just so happens to come with aparts sprue from their radial 190s as well. With a BMW 801, cooling fan, and propellor that will not be needed. Problem solved. Now I just need to mount the engine where it will sit just right.

I also completed cleaning up the R1 MG-151 pod ejection chutes, hollowed out their bores and added a few more details to the cockpit. A 1/35 water can lid became the canopy closing crank and and I scratch built a throttle handle for the left console. Just about ready to begin interior painting.

Stumpjumper: It's 1/48 Accurate Miniatures (Eduard).

I have to say,I'm not a big Eduard fan anymore. This is my second Eduard build, and the fit on this FW is not great, and lots of flash to contend with. I attached the fuselage to the wings, and the fit was horrible. The cheapest Revell kit that I have ever built had a better fit. After lots of scraping and fiddling, I was able to Tenax the thing together, but had to cut the fuselage shell chutes off because they never would have fit. for now on, I think it will be Tamiya only!

Well be careful with that too Max!!! Just because it's in a Tamiya box, doesn't mean it is!

Yes like the Tamiya AR 196 float plane, Italeri molds...I do have the Eduard 190 in my stash and i have to say that i'm not really looking forward to building it....I'm doing the Tamiya D9 for this GB...

Juelz I have heard several people say that recently after getting excited about breaking them out and going at'em. In my honest opinion, which is honestly equal to2 cents I think Eduard should release the occasional kit but concentrate on wht they do the very best, PE and masks. A good idea would be a joint venture of the best kits of varying manufacturers and include their products as special editions. I for one haven't gotten but one lil 1/72 Eduard kit because I know I will probably struggle with anything bigger. Sometimes I would venture to say overengineered. I heard one time, an engineering degree is a piece of paper saying that you have had enough training to know when to leave well enough alone.

Sim i agree, especially with the joint venture idea...I've seen a couple of Eduard kits built here that were outstanding but for a modeler like me who struggles to find bench time and struggles with patience i find it easy to get bogged down with projects that take longer than 20 hours to build...The reason i changed my BoB GB build from the Eduard 110 to the Tam 109 is because after 12 hours on the interior alone i got bored with it and built yet another mustang...I do think though that Eduard should keep up the excellent work on their range of WW1 subjects, i have a couple in the stash that are just waiting for the right GB to pop up...

That's exactly what I had to do.

Hey everyone,

Here is my progress so far- I added PE to the wheel wells and right gun bay. I'm going to keep the left closed. Real bugger to close the left gun port hatch- the wing was about .5mm forward as compared to the moulded-in gun bay on the fuselage. Lots of scraping and adding plastic to get the door to fit. After the pics, I added the engine mounts- again one side is off about .5mm- I'm not going to worry too much about that. I'm going to leave the engine doors open, so hopefully this discrepency won't be a big deal.

Thanks,

Rob

Despite the issues you guys are encountering, the progress photos look very good indeed!  Some excellent progress there.  I am hoping to get some work done on my build today, and will post some pics later- promise!

Well, I'm sticking a fork in this one and calling it done!  Had a few issues here and there, but mostly the same as I have encountered on the other Tamiya Wulfs I have built.  Things like a wing that does not want to sit level with the fuselage and the landing gear alignment.  Besides those things, I fought with the flat coat and finally decided a satin coat would be good enough for me.  I did some minor scraping of the paint, but tried to keep the damage to a minimum as it was done late-war.  I added a dark overspray to the spinner, figuring that in the last days of the war the Luftwaffe was trying just about anything they could to make their aircraft less obvious (except for that yellow stripe around the cowl LOL!).  Well, enough of my ramblings, on with the pics!

Maxfax your doing a great job despite it fighting you all the way, I'm taking notes for mine.

Frank bravo! All looks ***-and-span to me, love the yellow band on the cowl. Do you dip your canopy's in future? they always look crystal clear to me.

Cheers...

Wow masterful build Frank!

What did you use to weather behind the landing gear carriage underneath?

Again Great unusual build.

Daywalker:  Wow- nice work! It's nice to see a plane with minimal weathering. I feel sometimes I get caught up in the whole weathering process and end up doing too much. The same goes for PE parts. I think I'll follow your lead on my present build.

Frank- Another beauty from the Daywalker model machine!  Really looks great, as usual you've nailed every aspect of the build and the end product looks outstanding.

Frank: that's terrific. The overspray on the spinner is excellent, and is the overall painting and markings!!

Someone should start a new thread with just pics of all the finished builds...I have gone thru about a dozen pages and seen some gorgeous work but it is too time-consuming to go through all of the pages in the thread and I don't wanna miss anything!

Many thanks everyone, much appreciated!  Sure feels good to finish this one up- felt as though it were growing roots on my bench LOL.

Mike- Thanks mate, and yes- I do dip my canopies in Future.  I usually polish them first with Tamiya polishing compound to remove any scratches if there are any present.

Andrew- Not quite sure what you mean by the area behind the landing gear.  Do you mean the streaks flowing from behind some of those panels?

Rob- Thank you!  One thing that has helped me with my weathering is to do a little at a time, then STOP when it looks like almost enough.  You can always go back and add some more if it needs it.  About the PE, I generally avoid it as I don't like working with it.  Sometimes though, it really adds an extra dimension to a part such as ring gunsights and other bits.

Great idea Manny!  I just updated page 1 with photos of each finished build.  Thanks for the tip!

Frank--I agree with the others.  The Wulf is a beauty.  Also, belated thanks for the links to the LG technical information.  I am going with the longer kit struts and hope to have "Yellow 10" on its feet this weekend.

Great idea to post pictures of all the builds on page 1!!
