So even light polishing with a coffee filter ended up wearing off that thin layer that gave the orange yellow it's "final" coverage, and I ended up with little lighter yellow dots all over the wings. So I resprayed.

One of the issues I was having with the Iwata last night was getting uniform coverage. It just sprays too small. So, I pulled out the Paasche H. Haven't used it to shoot paint in a while, and geez. If the Iwata's a rapier, the Paasche H is something more like a battering ram. It hurled paint at the wings in a way that, now that I'm all used to precision double action, just felt, well, uncivilized.

But, it got the wings covered good. Next it's on to the black and then, finally, NMF...with a lot of masking in between!

Me too! Been looking for them for awhile. Wouldn't it be useful if there was a database where you could enter pilot or unit (or browse by) and see if there were any decals for a particular plane? As much as I love aftermarket decals, browsing through "Big Beautiful Jugs" part I through part X and having to look at what graphics can be had is thoroughly tiresome.

Oh well. Ordered the decals today, and found me a Razorback on Amazon for $30! Got a bid going on a second one on eBay, but it's a semi-lowball so no biggie if I lose.

This one's going to be a 1/48 Tamiya P-47 Razorback, done up in the markings of Lt. Col. Harry Holt's "Magic Carpet" of the 366th FG/390th FS, 9th AAF. If you've ever watched History Channel's "Dogfights", this is the Jug flown by Bob Brulle in the Y-29 episode.

Looking forward to these markings since they're so distinctive. Standard OD/NG fuselage, but with bare metal cowl, cowl flaps, canopy, and oh yeah, wings. Top and bottom.

May not get to this one for a while, but hey, I have until May!

I detailed the landing gear of the MiG. The kit parts were pretty basic. I added wiring, styrene, as well as a paperclip to give the added detail. There are still a few spots to touch up with the paint before I call it good, but here they are!

Looking good Doogs can't see any dusting from here...Blame the humidity, thats what i always do Don't be too hard on yellow red will feel left out...I hate that srpraying that colour as well....Not too keen on white either....

And then there were yellow wings!

Loved the Gunze Mr. Color paint. As always, though, I HATED spraying yellow, especially over such an area. It always seems like yellow takes a lot more coats to build up uniform coverage. Usually I get decent coverage in 3-5 light coats. With this yellow it was like 15!

And I ended up with some dusting. Strange because I was dealing with lacquer, but I was pushing through so much paint last night that maybe some dried in the tip, maybe I sprayed from too far away a few times, or maybe I can just blame humidity!

Either way, I'll see if I can knock it down with polishing. I'm NOT sanding and repainting. Again.

I love my home state for a lot of reasons but that four letter word (snow) is not one of them. If I want snow I can drive about an hour to the Sierra's and get my fill then back down the hill.

BTW the currant temp @ 5:30 P.M. is 73 and sunny.

IBuild148 interesting masking method you are using there for the anti glare panel, looks much easier than the way I do it. Might just have to try that my ownself  Cant wait to see these Cats all in colors.

Steven and Ibuild, the metal finishes are looking good! I love seeing the builds when the finishes start to come together.

Ibuild - Is that an old Impala I spy on your bench? Looks great! My first car was a '65 Impala SS.

Not much in the way of progress but just to show that I'm moving along, here she is with the black undercoat. Only a couple of dog hairs to pick out of it.

Yah, airholes for the highspeed brake. Just remember, it didnt sit flush on the real thing, if you look at the photos i posted you can see it hangs down a bit, But then that birds pretty butchered. A flush fit does look better, but think "soviet construction"

Thanks guys! I am starting to enjoy this scratch-building stuff.   I only got a few things done yesterday (classes are starting to pick up)  and it involved the speed brake and the dorsal spine.  The speedbrake was the standard thick plastic of the kit with panel lines where the air-holes (?) in the brake need to be. So I carved them out with my hobby knife.  The holes ended up being a little bit bigger than what would be accurate (from photos) but it looks better than a solid chunk of plastic!

I also went over the Bondo with the Testors putty, because no matter how much I sanded, it still remained pitted... I have yet to sand it down, but here is what it looks like right now:

P-47 Update,

Well, Sept. 15th has passed which is when I thought I would be finished.

However I had life and cold issues and worse I messed up on the canopy. This resulted in me cannibalizing another P-47D since Tamiya USA will not have replacement parts for this kit until November.

Anyways...Here are some before and after shots:

Owl - The MIG is looking good.

Doogs - I used Tamiya white, rattle can 1 time, Never again. If you ever go back (don't) I send you my leftover can.
