simpilot, vetteman: Thanks for your comments/advice on my Bondo question. I don't have a micro-saw but I did fashion putty knives out of skinny wooden craft sticks. The Bondo is drying now and should be ready for light sanding tomorrow. After that I will mask and join the canopy to the fuselage.

The landing gear, engine, propeller and cowl have all been painted. Instead of using the decals, I painted the red and white stripes on the cowl and will paint the red, white and black strips on the tail.

Respectfully, Dobby

jmabx - that P-59 is looking gorgeous! You might want to try priming with something like Mr. Surfacer 1200 or maybe 1000 to overcome some of that surface texture. I used 1200 to prime the Dauntless and was blown away by how smooth it finishes, especially when swiped with fine finishing paper.

If I remember correctly, Texas ANG painted up a yellow wing F-16 to commemorate the anniversary of one of their squadrons... pretty cool!

You are correct.

IMO, this is proof of concept. Though I think it would have looked eleventy million times more awesome in natural metal instead of blue. But it's the Air Force...

Being a prop kinda guy I cant help but think maybe an F-4 or a swingwing F-14 yellow wing with the old trainer markings. Ya know pre WWII.

DoogsATX me thinks you have a group going Yeah

Ohhh a Phantom would look gorgeous all yellow winged up! So would an A-4. The only aircraft I'm having trouble picturing in yellow wing livery is the F/A-18.

Part of me would be tempted to try my hand at a Vought F7U Cutlass (for some reason my dad's favorite aircraft ever...). Anyone know if that Hobbycraft 48th kit is decent? I remember trying my hand at a Cutlass back when I was a teenager. Can't remember the manufacturer, think it was in 72nd, but it was just terrible.

Those are some awesome pictures Richie! Yes  I would imagine that most of those pics could be used as a reference for the NA F-86?

Randy - Nice idea for the Bondo spreader! I use glazing putty with a metal spatula (made for the hobby) and it is hard to get the putty smooth. I'll try your idea... thanks! Cool

Here's a quick mockup of the P-59. The wings aren't glued to the fuselage yet because they need some clean up. I'm really impressed with the fit of this kit! So far it's gone together better than the Tamiya Fw-190 I just built! Surprise  If this thing takes any filler, it's because I'm an idiot!

The only issue I'm going to have with this kit is the fact that the plastic has a textured surface. That would be fine if it was getting painted OD or something but not good for a NMF. I will have to do some sanding to smooth it out.

Randy, not sure why the Sabres had there brakes half out of the hub, I would say it might be to increase the braking area considering the size and width of the wheels and certainly helps cool them lol.

I amprobably overcomitted already on GB's, but a yellow wings is a go if I can swing it. I have a few I can do, one is a 1/48 Hobby Craft P-26 with an Eduard PE set.

 DoogsATX:

vetteman and Julez - Consider it done! I'm stacked up with GBs right now (this, 8th AAF, Ostfront...), but come the new year I'll gauge interest and see about putting something together.

Cool, might get me a little peashooter or somethingYes

To quote Eames from Inception, "you mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling" Cool

Embracing the what-finess, I'm thinking a Corsair for sure. And, while I'm more of a prop guy, maybe an F-8 Crusader. I think one of those would be amazing with a NMF fuselage and yellow wings!

Simpilot thanks for posting those pictures, I always like the detail shots. But I do have a question, whats the hub setup on the main gear ? I have never seen that before.

Jmabx that bay looks good to my eye, and I think a bit of a wash would bring it to life. Nice work on the details.

Julez come on you know you want the Buffalo it has your name on it and whispers to ya each time you walk into the store Devil After all yellow wings are cool, gotta have one on the shelf. No problem with the change buddy, I will update the front page this evening.

To answer your question Julez, I had lots of trouble applying the bondo to my models with voids and an over all slopppy looking job. So I thought I used to use bondo on cars doing body work, why not do it in miniture ? So I took a wooden chopstick and my microsaw and cut a slice in the end of it about a 1/4 inch deep. Then some thin plasticard and some ca glue. Heres what I ended up with. It does soften the plastic card but it only takes a few minutes to make another one if needed. Another neat thing is you can shape them too for corners or most shaped you would need to apply the bondo.

A small plastic spatula like the larger ones I used on cars the, full size ones LOL. I tried a metal trowel and that didn't work very well. As you can see from the tail in the picture it worked well with no voids and only needed minimal sanding to smooth out. Hope this helps you out

DoogsATX what a great idea for a group build man ! " What If They Had Yellow Wings " Would love to see an F-14 or any modern fighter with yellow wings, way cool. Toast

CallSignOwl glad to hear you made it to collage safe and sound. I will be looking forward to your MiG when you can get back to bench.

Sure am glad the forum is back up again Big Smile almost had some emotional problems waiting for it to come back up. Propeller

Dobby, when I have used Bondo before that was what i used to apply it. Nail polish remover to remove it without sanding??!!! Hmmmm I like that idea!!! Forgot Randy had posted that technique moons ago.

vetteman: Quick question on the application of the Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty. I applied it with a toothpick then my finger (for lack of better tools), then removed any excess with nail polish remover (Cutex acteone). Did I do it right? What tool do you use to apply this stuff?

Respectfully, Dobby

Cool pics, simpilot

DoogsATX, I cat wait to see those wildcats get built!

I arrived safely here at the dorms, but I still need to unpack and get my room set up.  It is nice to be back! This might sound weird to some, but I missed school. Smile

I might take a few weeks to settle in (class schedule, AFROTC, and finding a campus job), so I dont think I will be building for a bit, but when I do, I'll let you know! Wink

Julez -- I have some detail closeups of the Sabre at Fast Jets Fighter Museum here in Adelaide, I don't recall if she's an Avon Sabre but much of the engineering should be in common with other types -- I'd be delighted to post some shots to assist.

Beautiful pic of the sabre mike!!!! For those glaring at the pipe running along the port fuse, that is not standard equipment, that is the pipe for the smoke system. Got to have an up close look at her when Point Cook had their last Air Pageant. They had it parked in front of the hangar next to us.Eats

 Julez72:

Yeah these bloody Yellow Wings are getting to me, while i'm not much of a Wildcat fan i am eyeing of a Buffalo at the LHS with NMF fueselage and yellow wings, it also has those red/white tail feathers i like so mch...

Go for it!

Personally I wish the Navy had kept the yellow wings around, maybe as a ceremonial paint scheme or something. It would've been very cool to see a Corsair (or hell, a Tomcat) sporting the scheme!

I couldn't agree with you more ATX, some of the nicest looking schemes i've ever seen are on prewar US aircraft...I probably will do the Buffalo, this is a long GB and i like the little Tamiya 1/48 fighters for quick builds inbetween larger projects.....

Randy, Hey i've had a change of plans with the Mirage 111 for this GB....Thanks to Frank starting the Hornets nest GB i've sorta been given the opportunity to do a history in scale of the RAAFs 75squadron so i going to paint the Mirage in the grey/green scheme instead of NMF....on the other hand to do 75 squadron i'll need an Avon Sabre so can you please add a Highplanes conversion kit for an Avon Sabre in 48 scale...Thanks buddy....

oh yeahan Avon Sabre...note the differences in the fueselage and armament from the F86 and the black and white chequers and top hat motiff of 75sqd

OWL - Nice work on the P-51! Can't wait for the MiG! Yes

Randy - That Talon paint looks pretty darn good!

Doogs - It will be a treat to see another yellow wing in this group build! Beer

I haven't done much on the Airacomet lately. I've glued the wings together but that is of no real interest. Wink  I decided to busy up the forward gear bay a little with some plastic scraps and a little wire. It was rather dull before.

The aluminum paint gave it a... well... blah appearance but hopefully a dark wash will help with that.

Now I can proceed with gluing the forward half of the fuselage together. Yay! Big Smile
