Hi All:

1 WIP shot of the Mig ... note the high tech model stand it's sitting on :-) ...

I rubbed down the entire airframe with 0000 steel wool, which solved a lot of the paint issues I'd had with the first shots  ... I then shot it again and it turned out nicely (not really seen in this 1 photos) ...

It started raining early last evening and has been ever since, so no painting today but for stuff I can do inside ...

Stik, tough choice, a Marine flame-throwing Sherman, or a Tigercat???  Hmm.... Both!  Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.  They both rate way high on the coolness factor.

Draken, love the little Lockheed collection!  I would love to duplicate those for my own collection.

Cheers,

Greg

Draken, the last new Airfix kit I built, a 1/30 submarine late last year, had good decals. No issues whatsoever. I have no quarrel with their decals. But it sounds like you had quite the goat rope there.

Gamera, I still keep peeking in over at the Battle of France GB. All those Chars are really eye catching. I will have to know one of mine out next year.

So far it looks like everyone is rooting for the Tigercat as my next KW build. I will keep that in mind here Wink

Stik,

The F-80 is by a East European company called Gran.  Definitely an inferior kit for the price.  I've built the Airfix already and it's still on my shelf (built before I joined the group build).  It didn't turn out too bad, and provided a lot of necessary experience for the Gran kit.  But it eventually went downhill fast when the decals went on.  The Airfix decals were so thick that the wouldn't conform to anything with the slightest bend.  I used Microsol and everything I could to work on them.  Eventually I ended up using white glue on them after they dried, holding them in place until it set enough that I thought things werepermanent.  Maybe the OLD Airfix decals are okay, but the recent ones are absolute garbage!

I still haven't decided on 'the next thing' myself.  I'd also like to see a Tigercat on the group.  I've got the Two Italeri/Rev-Germ. Invader kits as well as more FAA stuff in the stash.  I want to do my Privateer, but I'm waiting on my Academy B-24 in the states to arrive here so I can scrounge good detail parts from it.  Hmmm...  Maybe that Avenger ambulance?  We'll see what happens.

SP: Think it's the office computer here, it does it the weird format thing every now and again. Indifferent

I'd love to see the F7F. Love the looks of the plane- she's one that looks like she's flying six-hundred mph just standing still. Heart

Sorry I haven't done much of anything on the M46, I've been diverted on the Char B1 on Tigerman's Blitzbuild.

Draken, your four Lockheed's are added to the front page. But I missed who made the F-80 kit. Nice work on them. The family resemblance is quite obvious especially in the group shot. Very sweet!Yes

 What do you guys think?

Great work on the Lockheed's, draken ...

Stik - go for the Tigercat if you like black ... might be a great change from shiny airplanes ...

My next 3 are the Mig-15 I've almost finished - then, the Bell 47 helo, which too is almost finished and then - gasp - I'm going to try another tank - this time, a Patton (M 48) ...

WIP progress photos on the first 2 builds in the next day or so ...

Gamera, today everything is coming out just fine on IE here. Everything stacked vertically nice and pretty just like I like it... Must be a Monday thing... who knows?Hmm

What is next here? I know for my next Korean War build subject I am eyeballing a couple Marine Corps items... either the Dragon's 1/35 M4A3 HVSS POA, or an AMT/ERTL 1/48 F7F-3N as a night interdictor. I am kinda leaning towards the Tigercat right now. My father caught one look at the kit in my stash, and being an old aircrewman on the B-26 Invader, thought the Tigercat looked like, in his words, "A real Hot Rod". He was not familiar with the Grumman twin at all, but it appealed to him and his lifelong assiciation with aviation. What do you guys think?

Draken Andy: Yay, a whole constellation of stars! Great work and congrads on making something out of some 'dog' kits.

John: Very nice, gosh I need some display cases or something, I hate finishing stuff and sticking it in a cardboard box for lack of room.

SP: Ok I'm getting a weird formatting issue now, WinXP and some version of Explorer at work. Draken's photos are all coming up in a vertical row but the paragraphs won't format. Rather than lines each sentence is coming up in one long horizontal line that I have to use the bottom scroll bar to see the whole thing.

And here they are, in all of their glory, or not.

The Heller F-94B has a few minor issues, it has no fuel drains at the back end, the canopy is a single piece, the radar scope is set in the in use position, the gun ports aren't opened, and there's no gear bay detail at all.  Despite that, I made it into a decent kit, and included the AN/ARN-6 Radio Compass inside the canopy.  I also opened the canopy and chopped the radar scope to be in the ground position.  I'd also like to see some afterburner detail for this kit.  It's too bad that no ones made a photo etch or resin set for it.  The on KW unit to have decals is the one that both Doc Win and I used.  I'm sure that he'll agree, this is one of the most poorly done sets I've ever seen.  The instructions are incorrect in several ways, the USAF markings are too small, and they only give you port side no walk markings!  Enough for three kits, and not a single one of them is for the Starboard wing.  I trashed one in the process and then snatched some from an F-80 set.

Overall, not a horrible build.  Very basic, both in design and detail, this is definitely a kit that's long in the tooth and shows it.  Frog originally designed it in the late fifties/early sixties, it was re-leased in the US by AMT, and then Heller bought the molds when AMT switched to ERTL/ESCI for products following the demise of Frog/Novo.  Did you get all that, a quiz comes later...  The cockpit is incredibly basic, but does have control panels and sticks.  This is the only the second kit of this build that I've done that had pilots, so I used them!  Ther' is an absolute minimum of pretend detail in the gear bays, none of it accurate, and the main gear is incredibly fiddly and thin.  I was surprised that I never broke one of them!  One of the peculiarities of the F-80/T-33 is the strange fit of the tail.  Both this kit and the Gran Kit had a weird panel line seem and included the vertical fin with one side of the fuselage.  It was very difficult to fill and caused many issues.  I used Superscale decals and was danged glad that i always spray at least a single coat of clear gloss over the decals.  THIN!!!  Eventually everything went on satisfactorily, one of the intersting side notes is that nearly all of the F-80 units had one or two T-33's as liaison/hacks/spotters and the buzz number designation didn't change from the FT to anything else because it was considered a TF-80 at the time.

Oh, heck...  This thing was horrid.  I should've forked out the money for a Sword kit.  In many ways a knock off of the uber useless Airfix kit, it does have a few slightly interesting additions:  Gear bay detail, control panel, accurate seat, dropped flaps, and decals that are worth a dang.  It's made with an incredibly soft, almost translucent, white plastic.  There is flash all over!  I felt at times like I was building a vacuform kit.  The kit includes both standard and Misawa tanks as well as two bombs.  The decals are nice, thick enough to be put on without 2 coats of clear gloss, they're fairly accurate, the fit is acceptable, and they snugged down just great with Micro-sol.  The only thing to watch out for on the decals is that the wing do not walk areas are not a thin enough line and don't say "DO NOT WALK" anywhere on them.  The fit of the intakes is pathetic, and the fit of the wings to fuselage needed nearly an 1/8th of an inch hacked off of the inside of each wing.  This one's getting a serious DO NOT BUY from this modeler...

Heller's RT/T-33 kit is currently out of production and quite hard to find.  I ended up paying about $18.00 [USD] plus shipping for mine.  It's the easiest way to make a recce bird from a Shooting Star.  Wonderful interior detail!  The only thing missing was the radio compass that sits on top of the recce gear in the back seat.  Neither the standard nor the recce nose fit entirely well.  I followed the instructions and glue the nose together before attaching it to the fuselage (easier to install nose weight).  If I were to build this kit over, I think I'd do it so that I glued each have to the fuselage halves first.  Very little flash, easy assembly, straightforward and no issues.  I was a little disappointed that ther wer no clear inserts for the camera glass.  I was also disappointed because my canopy had a flaw in the top center of it!  A big white streak that was inside the plastic and was not a stress mark.  I've talked to a few people and the conclusion is that it might be tiny bubbles.  I ended up putting layers of clear gloss over flat black to  fill the indents for the glass.  As I couldn't find any easy markings for a recce group with RF-80's/RT-33's I went with the markings from an F-80 unit.  Maybe I'm wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that some of the units had these birds for post strike BDA.

I'v3 learned a lot by doing this set as a minigroup build of my own.  I've got three more that I can do like this:  F-84's by Tamiya, Heller and Academy; F-86's by Matchbox, Fujimi, Frog, and Academy; and MiG-15's by Hobby Boss, Academy, and KP.  It's just as much fun learning how to do things differently and learning how different manufacturers tackle problems as it is building and displaying the kits.

Well, I've got the F-94, the T-33, the RT-33, and the F-80 done!  WOOHOO!  I've got them at work, and remembered the camera, AND I remembered to take some pictures.  I have to wait until I get home to upload them as Photobucket is blocked at work and they won't let you log into the site with a proxy.

I rearranged my USAF shelf so that it no longer has any DPRK equipment (now on the shelf with all of the armour) and there is now room for all of the Lockheed 'stars'.  I'm not going to get rid of my original Airfix one even though it's not so good looking and was evil as heck to build.  I like the markings on it and they go well with the rest of the 'stars.'

As for the pics, I hope that they're okay,.  I tried to use a solid background (tough at this school) and had direct sunlight on the subjects.  They look good in the camera, but you can't always tell.

Type to y'all later!

Helo H-34
....

That's the plan !

John, as my dear Granny would say: "Good Grief" ... man, what a room ... goodness gracious, what I'd give to have cabinets like that ...

I have a 'dedicated' shelf in the living room where I can put my  'bestest'  builds ... right now, just the P-80 and the F-86 are displayed ... with the exception of a 1/32 P-51 that I'm finishing to look like 'FRENESI'  -. a WW II aircraft flown by a great guy that I met and corresponded with for a number of years right up until he passed away ... he was an ace in both the Pacific theater as well as the European theater of action - everything else is carefully boxed and stored in a big cabinet out in the garage .... this one will also go to the living room shelf ...

I just sprayed the Mig-15 and disaster struck ... I don't know what went wrong but the paint pooled and puddled everywhere ... same paint I used on the F-86, P-80 and F-84, but this is just a mess ... after it's dried and cured, I think I'm going to have to carefully sand the whole airframe down and start over ... too bad I've not found any descriptions of Mig-15's flying as night fighters ... I could just paint the whole thing black and be done with it ! ...

Enjoy the rest of the weekend ... BTW, draken - easy as it goes outside ... don't want you breaking something ...

Andy , Great WIP on the Lockheed "Stars" .

I like the little 'thumbs' on the F-94 canopy , excellent work ; I did something similar on Italeri's F-8E Crusader .

Pepper , thanks also for the offer on those metal landing gear struts ; I saw some metal gear legs for the C-121 Constellation on the link you posted and there might be some others I'm interested in as well .

I ordered the Vacuform AF-2W along with the C-140 , so I will wait till they arrive and see what Airmodel suggest for the landing gear struts . I also ordered from Airmodel the RF-8 / TF-8 and F8U-1 Crusader III vacuform sets . I have a stack of 1/72 F-8 Crusader kits in the stash and I have already built two RF-8 crusader's using the Falcon vacuform sets and they came out okay ; I've wanted to build a two seat crusader for years now , so I look forward to them arriving in the mail .

Sorry there's been no progress on my builds this past week ...Embarrassed

Instead I've started building the new shelving and cabinets for my ridiculously large kit stash .

There's five cabinets in all and I started with a new bench top and shelving for the computer ;

Before ...

I want to utilise as much of the wall space as possible , so I moved the Navy/Marine Corps cabinet and made room for the computer ;

After...

Tomorrow , I'll install the new Navy cabinet under the front window ;

Before ...

And the new cabinet will go here ;

It takes about a day to cut the shelving board to size , pre drill and carry each piece from the garage to the house and  upstairs , so I'll be on this for another four to five day's . Late this afternoon I cut the shelving board to size for the Navy/Marine cabinet , so first thing in the morning I can put her together and then add the glass shelves and start cutting more board for the next cabinet after lunch tomorrow ....

That's the plan !

                          John .

Re:  Picture viewing

It's gotta be a function of how IE works with the FSM groups.  That's all there is to it.  I went back and tried Chrome on both of my home computers and everything was fine there, also.  I'm not all that enamoured of IE simply because of all the security issues, and dislike having to deal with so many ads (Adblockplus on Chrome and Firefox!), otherwise I'd give it a shot.

Re:  Lockheed stars

No new progress, the Starfire is nearly completed, I have to add the landing lights on the nose gear and the gunsight, that's it.  After that it's decals, decals, decals!  I might get to that today, as it's raining here in Korea and I hate dealing with going out in the rain.  Some idiot somewhere decided that polished granite is a cool thing to have in buildings and on sidewalks.  VERY DANGEROUS in rain and snow.  So.eday I hope to meet him in a dark alley whilst carrying a ball bat.  Two years ago I actually slipped and broke a toe because of that stuff!!!

A couplea questions for the group re sizing ...

Ofttimes, when I open this forum, the pages will extend so far to the right that I have to scroll, scroll and then scroll again ...

And every time I post photos, I see the yellow line at the bottom of each, telling me the photos have been resized ... supposedly, each is resized regardless of the size I post up -. as an experiment, with my WIP photos posted a few days ago, some of them were more than 3,500 pixels in width - some were only 500 pixels in width, yet they all looked the same regardless of the size I'd posted ...

Any suggestions to either question ? ...

BTW, I'm running the AOL 9.1  browser (an IE 7 clone I'm guessing) with Windows Vista ...

Thanks,

pepper

Draken the side by side photos show up on my home computer when i am using explorer. that is my primary browser there, although i am using  google chrome and safari occasionaly these days as well. I do not like firefox. I am posting this from my phone where your images are verticly stacked. Go figure...

Pepper: Temperature falling off here too, the morning is back to frigging freezing and then very mild and comfortable by noon. Too bad I don't have a job where I can go in at noon. Stick out tongue

Draken: Very nice work on the F-94B.

Funny, I'm running the latest edition of Firefox on Win7 at home and Draken's photos come up in a regular vertical strip. And some version or other of Explorer at work under WinXP and the same. I do get weird formatting issues at times on the latter but not generally with Draken's photos.

stack your images verticaly, rather than side by side.

Wait a sec...  You're seeing them side by side?  I wonder why...

This is a really interesting issue here.  I'm using Firefox and have done so on three different versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and two versions of Linux and I've never seen them side by side, only vertical.    I remember a discussion a month or three back where someone was asking about picture size and I ignored it because I always see the pictures the same size.

Is this a browser issue?  Is it different in Internet Explorer v Firefox or Safari?  Or is it because you're the admin of the group and you're seeing things differently because of the abilities that you have?  I'm very curious about this...  Is anyone else dealing with side by side pictures or different sizes?  What browser are you using, if so?

And I'll do my best to try and remember to put a carriage return between each picture from now on. Big Smile  It's just the internet weirdness that interests me.

Back on topic...  One of the things that you'll notice about my F-94 is that the canopy is opened.  It's always annoyed me that Heller put such nice detail in there and gives you a one piece freaking canopy!  So I took the razor saw and opened it.  I painted the inside of the tip tanks OD green for anti glare and went with a heavily weathered 'red' radome.  I painted it rust brown and then gave it a lot of radome tan for weathering.  The two dielectric panels on the tail are off white for the center one and radome tan for the tip.  Since the markings are all black I wanted SOME colour to this bird...  I'm also going to mix the serial numbers about so that it's different from the bird that Doc Win built.  I don't want to build the exact same kit as someone else on the build.

Have fun y'all!  Toast

Draken that Starfire is coming along nicely! I am looking forward to seeing the completed build! Soemthing manacing in those bulky lines of that bird. Can I ask a BIG favor though? PLEASE stack your images verticaly, rather than side by side. This makes it so much easier to read all posts that follow since you dont have to move the screen side to side to read each line...

Lookin' mighty fine so far ...

Looking at that long canopy and the way it mounts to the fuselage, was it a real squeeze to get the back seater in and strapped down ? ... seems like you'd have to be a contortionist to do that .

As a matter of fact, yes!  In the kit the radar scope for the GIB is in the 'aloft' position.  I cut it and trimmed it,  then replaced the top of the scope so that it would be in the 'ground' position.  Fact is, the GIB rarely if ever left the cockpit safely in the event of an emergency, he had to push the scope forward and down to enable an egress.  The GIB was a very TREACHEROUS position in the Starfire...  The Starfre also had the thrust to weight ratio fo a brick with a herring attached.  With full ammo and fuel, it could almost get off of the ground in standard temp/pres/hum...  In the Guard, they often went aloft with underwing tanks.  God help them...

As an aside, when Kelly Johnson (the guy who CREATED the shooting star for the USAAC) saw the first F-80 lift off with the Misawa tanks and full war load, he turned his head hoping that it wouldn't crash...

One can only wonder what he thought of F-94B's leaving the ramp with full load and ammo...  Even with an AFTERBURNER!

One note on the Tamiya kit I'm building now ... the plastic is very soft ... as I trim off the pour stubs from the sprues or scrape a wee bit of flash off, I've found I have to be extra careful and use very light pressure to keep from lifting plastic all around the areas I'm working on ...

Anyone have this problem ? ... this is the Tamiya Clear Edition Mig 15 ... don't know if the plastic is different or ? ...

The Heller F-94B as a WIP!  I've include some detail pics of the Radio compass...

Yeah, I'll probably finish it before I go to bed...

So, out to the garage I go ... I'm thinking I'll be finished with this one over the weekend ... photos to follow ...

Hey Fellas!  Looking good.  All I can do these days is lurk, but you guys make being a spectator still pretty enjoyable.  Unfortunately, I had too much studying to do on the weekend of the Korean War themed AMPS show, so I missed it.

No bench time hasn't stopped me from spending money though.  I got a steal on a couple of AMT/Matchbox F-86A's, an M-40, another Priest, armored Jeeps, and a BA-64 armored car.  Darn ebay on my phone!

I can't wait till Christmas break so I can have some bench time.  So, I will have to live vicariously through you guys in the mean time.

By the way, Squadron has some pretty good books on sale.  They are in the back of the flyer including:  Air War Over Korea, Mig Alley, F2H in Action, M3 Half Tracks in Action, US Tank Destroyer Walk Around, among others.  They run anywhere from $1 to $5, most for $3.

Cheers,

Greg

Heya John!

I don't remember who makes it, but there's a kit out of the AF-2W/S, it's from Russia and it's not a horrible looking little unit.  I've got one back in the states but can't remember the name of the outfit.  ISTR that it was a two-off run by that company.  They only did the two kits (S version and W version) and I didn't see anything else.  I could be wrong about that last bit, but I know it exists!

RVHP did the Guardians in 1/72 resin, 7298 for the AF-2S and kit 7299 for the AF-2W.

They look pretty good in the box.

John

I looked on google and found that the one I have is by ACE.  The same company that does so much Soviet armour.  Not a bad kit, at least, according to reviews.

As always, great builds,  guys !! ... it's a genuine pleasure to share work with others all around the globe ...

Hi All:

As promised - some WIP photos ... if it desn't get too cold later this day, I'll start airbrushing ... who woulda thunk it but just a few weeks ago, it was way too hot to be painting ... last night we had a cold front move in and the temps are to go down into the low 30's before nightfall ...

Anyhoo, here you go ...

Parts is parts ...

Left side ...
