Thanks Raider!  It isn't scratch building but it keeps me off the streets at night.

The Hobby Boss subs are very nice.  Only about 10 parts to each one and they go together pretty well.  I'm just getting back into serious model building and the simple models allow me to regain some lost/rusty skills.

The next sub I complete will be an OKB Grigorov Thresher.  It is a really nice resin kit with some PE.  I'll get it done this weekend.  Then I can finish the other three HB subs I have.

A little progress on the Graf Spee. Fist off ( a huge addition...) the cowl added to the Arado...

Then this midday I added a "tint" coat of heavily thinned Tamiya Deck Tan over the Testors Deck Tan to tone it down. I think the Testors shade is way too vivid. Tomorrow I will added a wash of Raw Umber over the wood to make it "pop"...

Graf Spee has been moved to the front of my build batting order now that I have completed most of those "near complete" builds from last year.  After watching one of the ship experten WIPs on the Trumpeter Zerstorer I formed some ideas as to how to proceed with building and finishing this beauty. Sub assemblies of building, painting and washes before being attached to the larger compnonents...

So here are some componenets such as the bridge area partially painted

Now that I have added the last fiddly bits to those areas I need to do touch up and detail painting, add the camo pattern, do a wash and some dry brushing where needed.

And I made some mods to the Arado float plane. I hollowed out the area of the float supports as that had been molded solid... Also the raised detail lines werre way to heavy so I used those a a guide, scribed in new ones, and sanded of the raised ones. I still need to attach the cowl.

and a couple of teaser shots of all sub assemblies placed on the hull. This makes me want to finish her up...

Number five for me...Wrapping up on an F-18 group build than I should be able to return to the Arizona kit in a few weeks. I got the Gold Metal detail set for her which looks good.

Very nice raider hall.  I love carrier's i think my favorit part is building and detailing the planes and deck vehicles for them.

middle 27c is the customer Oriskany and bottom 27c is mine Hancock. going to work on both flight decks this weekend.

Taking shape slowly but surely. Scratch building is the most fun and great sense of accomplishment when done. Please keep updating.

As for the material itself, I have many questions:

Is there any particular type of cardboard to use like streyene? How do cardboard take on paint? Do you coat with something beforehand before colouring? Moisture/warp?  

If I ever scratch build a hull I would definately want to use it as a master for resin re-casts, is that possible with cardboard hulls? My carrier phase is overish so I'll be mostly watching now.

 

potchip- That carrier is really gorgeous...........very nice job.

uctrekker- Wish I could  give you a magic technique to cut out those areas, but alas, I cannot add to what others have posted. Here's hoping that all is going well.

raider-hall- Wow, what an ambitious project you have undertaken..............will be much fun to watch it come together.

To everyone- Your builds look really great. I am following them all with much interest.

I have cleaned up the seams on the Emden's hull and have worked on the tiny, but deep, sink holes in the whale boats, cutters, and steam pinnace.

After a lull of three years I have finally fired up my compressor and used my airbrush. I sprayed a little light grey on the hull to check out my seam work and the filling of the sink holes.  I have attached the deck and am currently working on the deck seams. I wanted to get it installed earlier than the instructions would have me do it due to painting logistics.

Please excuse my dingy modeling towel.....I just laundered it prior to the second photo.

Oriskany hull is done. just needs fuel lines and railings on the hull. hanger bay will be work on.
