change of plans. just been comission to do a 1/350 1969 Nam USS Oriskany for a customer. so I wanted a 27c too. well my build will be in  the group build not the customer even though they will be builted at the same time. a photo that shows both.                                                                                                                                                       

It's been a while since I've updated my Lexington build.   Due to long hours at work I haven't gotten much done but, here are a few more photos:  First, since the kit doesn't provide any interior detail down the highly visible stack, I scratchbuilt some interior detail.

I also got into a little bit of the GMM photo-etch set for the Lex with the support girders for the bottom of the aft end of the stack's gun director and anti-aircraft platforms:

Nice to see a recent build of this kit.  What brand of glue will you be using on the plastic seams?

I'm not sure which brand to go for. Right now, I'll be concentrating on building up each subsection first before putting it all together. It's slow work. I haven't had all that much time. I've been drilling out the torpedo shutters.

I'll be installing the Balao torpedo shutters from Accurate Model Parts (formally U-Brass) once they're drilled out. 

And this is only the beginning of what  I need to do.

To recap, I wanted to convert my Revell Gato to the Pampanito to commemorate my son's overnight trip on board her with his Cub Scout Pack back in 2009. I was more involved with his Cub Scout Pack and became a Den Leader so I had to shelf the project until now.

I ordered Iron Bottom Sound's Pampanito Conversion Set and had gotten to work on the bow section. I'd plugged the anchor space with a resin plug from the conversion set. 

Next time, I will be cutting out the forward torpedo shutters and install a set of Balao shutters from Accurate Model Parts.

On The Bench: Revell 1/72 Gato converting to USS Pampanito 5% Done.

Also on the Bench:

1/72 Monogram B-52D 10% Done.

1/48 Tamiya Spitfire MK Vb 10% Done.

Actually..I was referring to masking the deck tan on grey only!

The planking was achieved via a few simple cardboard templates, aligned by hand and sprayed:

More recent progress: AA added and started rigging.

After posting my "where I'm starting from" narrative and pictures back in December, and committing to this group build, I've promptly headed off in a completely different direction, doing no work on my 3-deck Akagi, but instead progressing/completing a number of other 1:700 models on my workbench.  Go figure.  Add to that that I snapped a small part on my Iwata airbrush, which is off to the shop for replacement parts and a cleaning.

Completed this week are Hasegawa's VII and IX U-boats, IJN I-16 and I-58 submarines, among others.  Progress on an IJN oiler by Fujimi and the Japanese Antarctic research vessel Soya, by Special Models.  Beautifully detailed plastic kit, wonderfully colorful amidsts the military greys.  Will post pictures when complete.

PE and wood deck has come in for the Hasegawa 3-deck Akagi, and I'm very excited about the looks of that.  Also ordered from HLJ a 1:700-scale JMSDF Wakaba, a former IJN Tachibana Class destroyer sunk in July 1945, raised and returned to service as a JMSDF training vessel, and then converted to a radar testing vessel.  One option for this build is with an awkwardly large SPS-12 radar array over the pilot house, sure to be an attention-grabber on the shelf.  Some pix here if interested: http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=7409

Please know how good that deck looks to these eyes.  Very impressive.  The labor of the masking approach you've used is well worth it.

I sanded off  the ladders... I have a WEM photoetch set that has ladders on it that im gonna use.

I sanded the hull some more and put two pieces of the hull top on after sanding.  From the kit one piece looks cut off and non of the pieces fit.

I have quite of bit of filling to do.  Also some hard to reach sanding spots...I actually am just tired of sanding all together so I grabbed my dremel with a polishing bit and slowly sanded some more.

Enterprise CVN-65 Update:

Got the lower hull all done, except for the AM railings will add those next.  The hanger bay aircraft are next, followed by the slow process of painting the flight deck and all those tie downs

What are these stair, xmas tree looking things. Can I sand them off? HMS victorious 1/600.

After 229 days of research I believe they are ladders.  I have removed them as I will be replacing them with PE.  Also  as I am thankfull Airfix made this kit that I am able to build....after researching certain criteria as the ladders and such,  I found the kit is nothing like the actual ship it resembles.  Windows are wrong size, wrong spots, etc.  With that, this kit is work, lots and lots of work.  It gives me something to do and I thought it would build the funds....HA!  Certain posts and GB have me buying all kinds of kits to throw in the stash.    Thanks for watching!

Are small craft allowed here? Anyways, I have this Dragon 1/35 LSSC that is near completion and need some advice on weathering and detail painting. What was the "pilots"seat covered in? OD or Khaki Canvas? Black or Leather or Vinyl? Also what sort of weathering would be present on a craft like this? The boat is mainly fiberglass with some ceramic armor so rust would not really be seen...

 

Looks great and yea its more then welcome here.  Just wish i could help with your weathing and paint questions.  Sorry.

Two hours from So. Cal...  Its about 70 degrees of sun and I'm freezing my butt off,  man its cold outside.  I realy miss 115 and can't wait for summer.    I have been building an 1/600 HMS Victorious in the ship thread not realizeing I was in this group build.  I started memory meds to maybe help.....  I have not done much but try to put the hull together and fill the seam.  Oh and also sanded the armor plating per a more experienced modeler.  *Cough Cough Bodoman*    Shall I transfer my work in progress here? Or just use this link...and continue here.

Ripcord glad to hear from ya.  Oh by the way currently it is -4 here in southern Maine and were looking at getting 2 feet of snow on Wednesday WAHOOOO!!!!!!  So no crying about 70 being cold haha.  JK your welcome to post pics here totally up to you boss.

For those that are interested the build started here.  Sanding the hull has taken myself quite awhile, maybe a month or so I think?  I find now a days I really enjoy having patience in my work and taking my time even though Im still a youngster sort of (30).  Sanding the armor plates away and creating smooth hull, I have run into these stair? ladder type pieces? being careful not to damage them sanding.

Then I realized...what are these?  I looked in my reference book that I am using Anatomy of the ship series HMS victorious and did not see them in the pictures or the drawings so my quiestion is what are these?  If I can't find them I may just remove them.

Also while sanding and cleaning other parts of the model I found it quite difficult to find a tool, blade, pin vise and such to clean up the tower here:

 well, the small mine sweeper will be my insurance in case the Tisconderoga didn't make it.
